No idea how i landed here. But when watching i got the urge to comment. -First one: for normal hikes the Phone you used is waterproof enough without the bag, but i put my wallet and my id ect. into such a bag. Sure everything that's a plastic card by now isn't hurt by water, but where i live, there are still some things in paper, and they are kept dry this way. -The cork and the key: yes it will float. But depending on the current and waves this also can be worse than sinking. (crossing a small stream that's maybe knee deep and your key falls into that, you would be better off if it sinks and you can retreave it compared to it "sailing off".) Why not just tie the key to your belt loop or belt? Those seldom break and few people loose their trousers while hiking. (And i don'T mean tie it to your beltloop and have it dagle around. Tied to the loop and still put into a pocket. So 2 safety layers.) And i would do the same with the little Victorinoy you showed: take a piece of cord, make a loop put one end of hte loop through the key ring of the Vic and the other end through the end you just put through the ring. And then tie it to the belt or beltloop the same way with the other end. -> big loop through the beltlopp knife through that loop. knife into pocket. There's for sure a name for that "knot" but i don't remember) -ice thing: Sure, if you really need iced water. (no idea how far from your hiking trails you life, but i think most people won't have ice left when they reach the start of their hiking trails. And for me anyways: better warm water than no water. There is another thing i would have like to know earlier in my life though, and i have only gained that knoweledge from a norwegian YT video 2 years ago: If you are outside in freezing temperatures, and your waterbottle is not insulated in any way: store the water bottle upside down. Ice will form on top, and so you can turn it around and stil drink. If you store the waterbottle the normal way, the ice is where you try to drink out of. (I had that happen to me unfortunately, and i needed ski sticks to produce a hole in the ice to drink out of the bottle.) -The "time scale" on the water bottle: first of all, this seems too little water for too much time. Second: our body has a mechanism that works for hundrets of thousands of years now. But people ignore it and think they know better: when you feel thirsty, drink. Your body tells you early enough. It works, and it prevents dehydration. Unless you ignore your thirst, then you need a reminder of some sort, but that's kind of like needing a reminder to not look into the sun too long. (a sign that there's already something wrong.) Just like with eating people think they need a reminder that they should eat something and how much. But our bodies do that for us, if we listen. (and when people eat too fast they outrun their bodies message that they are full.) -When you showed the lip balm, i thought you are going to use it as a fire accellerant or something. Not that you throw away something usefull and put money into it's sticky casing. ;-) -Good choice of Multitool.
This video should be helpful to new hikers. Nothing new for us long time outdoors people, but this is a good collection of some nice tips we have been using for many years. I would keep the lip balm and find another place to hide emergency money, inside a phone case works pretty well as most people can’t even go to the bathroom without their phone.😂
omg!! I thought it was just me! The BEST sight during a hike is the parking lot where your car is located AFTER the hike. It always seemed like WHERE IS IT, WHERE IS IT, am I lost? I AM SO TIRED. Then the sky opens And sun shines down The Heavens sing!!!!!
You still would have lost them. If you buy a life vest with pockets you have a place for keys, id, money and health insurance card. If you always wear it (as you’re supposed to) these will never get lost. Mine has flat pockets and has my kayak’s up to date registration in it. And yes I have been stopped by a park ranger to produce it. He was a nice guy, saw him again checking registration. He also knows all the lies and keeps track of the people who lied to catch them at it again and fine them.
I use them things that come out of beef jerky packages. I just put a bunch of them in an Old sock and put them on my dashboard and I no longer have fog on my windows
1st hack won't help a ziploc bag is not waterproof. 3rd hack is pollution. Just buy a rain jacket or poncho you can use over and over again. The garbage bag idea is good for last-minute emergency rain/shelter, but if you travel a lot, it's just creating pollution every time.
Why take so much toilet paper? When you hit a 1/4 roll at home switch it for a fresh one, pull the tube out of the 1/4 roll saving even more space. A far better option though is to carry wet wipes. They can be used for many things out than ya butt.
I love all of these! So cool to see others’ hiking life hacks I never would have thought of. Not sure why so many people are commenting negatively on this. Thank you for making this video and sharing your tips and hacks!! 😍
