Shown here is a brilliant hack for removing a rusted bolt without breaking a sweat. All you need is a power drill and a simple hack saw.
I used a Ryobi 18-Volt ONE+ Lithium-Ion Cordless 1/2 in. Drill and a Stanley 12 in. High-Tension Hack Saw, both purchased at Home Depot. No additional tools or accessories were required.
I was removing a 5/16 Carriage Bolt.
This would have saved me at least 2.5 hours if I had known about it before I manually removed 3 other rusted bolts from my old camper trailer!! Since I found this to be so easy, I knew I had to share it with you! I hope this helps you in your own projects!
Step 1: Insert and secure the bottom of the rusted bolt directly into your power drill.
Step 2: Place the hacksaw blade against the bolt threading, just above the rusted nut
Step 3: Hold the drill trigger down about halfway while keeping the hack saw steadily against the bolt.
Step 4: Keep going for around 3 or 4 minutes (depending on the size/thickness of your bolt... mine was 5/16)
That's it! It's stupid easy... even for a beginner like me!
Where did I find this tip? Right here: www.removeandreplace.com/2015/07/29/how-to-easily-cut-a-bolt-in-half-with-minimal-effort/

Hey, pretty clever. It’s nice to see people come up with different ways to solve a problem.

Thanks! It's still a baby channel, but I do want to keep it going. It's been a fun way to document my journey, and I hope others enjoy it, too :)

A Dremel with a cutoff disk or an oscillating tool would be much easier.

I literally had to look up what a cutoff disk is, but yeah, that would've saved me some trouble LOL

Very well done but I think you would have done evev better with drill going around the other way, stay safe Somerset mike.

Or you could by a jigsaw for like 20$ which is basically a electric powered hacksaw

A hacksaw cuts on the backstroke. Next time run the drill in reverse.

Ahhhhh, I saw another comment mentioning running the drill the other way... now I know why. That makes a lot of sense. Thank you!!!

@@kendall.vision Actually. If you had kept the saw on the right hand side of the bolt you would have been fine since in that orientation the drill was running the bolt against the backside of the bolt. When you moved the hacksaw behind the bolt, it was “running” with the teeth. An easier way would have been with a dremel tool or grinder with a cutoff wheel though this will work well if you are mindful of the teeth orientation.

Oh, you're right. I wouldn't have thought of looking at the teeth orientation of the hacksaw or a dremel. This is so helpful. Thank you thank you thank you While I might not encounter this same situation in this project, I am hopeful to take on more like this in the future. This has been such an incredible learning experience, partly thanks to comments like yours, and I am having a great time! It sounds like adding a dremel to my slowly growing collection of tools will be very valuable.

@@kendall.vision I always used to watch the Dremel commercials and think that it was a lot of hype and I would never need one. An auto restoration project I was working turned out to be a nightmare of rusted parts and fasteners. I bought a dremel and it proved invaluable. It’s smaller size makes it much more maneuverable than a grinder and you have a better variety of bits and attachments. The oscillating saws also work at cutting bolts as well. They are particularly good for installing electrical boxes in drywall. Much cleaner than using box cutters.

Yeah, I've had the same skepticism of various tools, intensified by my noob status, and not wanting to just freely purchase every little tool for every little project. I like to think of myself as resourceful, and if I can find a way to get it done with the tools I already have, I prefer that, even if it takes a little longer. However, this can also be a problem if I ignore a tool that has many uses and can shave huge amounts of time off of several projects. Feedback like this helps me to know when to go ahead on a tool purchase. Another example is a pocket hole jig. I know it would make some things a lot easier, and they are not that expensive. But I just keep thinking, "yeah, but how much will I use if AFTER this project?" LOL
