I just love Chris Do so much. Not only am I learning much about the techniques of brand and marketing and business from him. He affirms that I’m not crazy. I’m late to Asimov or the world building as a concept, but these are the stories I gravitate to the most. For a kid from a working class black family, turned ‘ poor black single mother’ I’m not supposed to be interested in any of this. And yet here I am. Sean you are great as well!

Kendra, As a ‘poor black single mother’ you said you’re not supposed to be interested in any of this. We are designed to be unique. Like each snowflake that will never be replicated, you were born with your own special fingerprints & your own beautiful soul. Stand in your truth. Own who you are. Go be the best version of yourself possible. God made you this way for a reason. There is a purpose to your life that will be revealed as time passes. I grew up in an abusive home where my Dad expected us to amount to nothing. I reject that negative voice in my head in the name of Jesus. Now I know the only one who defines me is Christ!! 👍 💕

The question on how to compete and how to find worth in pursuing it anyways despite the market being saturated was so good. I’ve been asking myself this same question within my niche, how do I compete with x y and z? They are so good at what they do, why would anyone watch me over them. Chris’s answer was so simple yet so strong. “Just do it your way.” It’s like the lesson he had with his coach, he just needed that permission. Less stress and anxiety over competition and instead now it’s how can I make this mine and how can I make the topic represent me and my style. I love this.

That’s interesting about the dip- that “everyone knows” you have to work though the dip because there’s such high return on the other side. I notice it’s the same with even watching artists working on a painting- there’s just about always a point where I’m like - oh no, you just it 😢 and I get sad and stressed for them, the “ugly point” of the painting. But they just keep going and suddenly in like “wow, I maybe would have given up at x point, and never even known y and z were possibilities.” I’ve become much more determined in general after learning this.

I did not know Chris was Vietnamese. I had a friend years back that came over to the U.S. from Vietnam with family that literally part of the boat people drama after the U.S. left. He told me how his entire family and extended family lived in a one bedroom apartment in NewYork City and none spoke any English. I was fascinated how he dedicated himself to learning English by watching TV. Then spent many years in public libraries learning English and U.S. culture. He got himself into college and became a high performing engineer in the hippa filtration field. He taught me how to apply discipline and determination to reach your goals. Great Personal Brand ❤

As a 56-year-old, obese lesbian who came out in 1984, what Chris said about us being the most confident people you’ll ever meet is very true. We learned early on that we couldn’t rely on a man to take care of us so most of us are well-educated and do very well financially. And we’ve had to be emotionally tough to deal with societal judgments, being lonely in our teenage years because we had to hide ourselves and who we loved and pretend to be straight (which is a horrible feeling), etc. We learned how resilient we are. We learned we are worthy of love even when our families disowned us (it doesn’t happen as much anymore but used to happen routinely) and we’ve had to learn how to accept that people think we’re unattractive, gross, etc. and brush it off. We’ve also learned that we have amazingly loving people who have stood by us even in the face of their own pain and confusion about who they wanted us to be (e.g. our mothers who wanted to see us walk down the aisle with a good man and have babies who’s now grappling with giving up her dream) - again that’s not as bad these days - but the older lesbians have seen a LOT of suffering. We watched friends and acquaintances in our tight-knit communities turn to addiction or suicide because they didn’t have the support they needed and deserved. And some of us were fortunate to realize we have the most amazing parents who love us unconditionally and are more bonded as a result. The rough times brought us closer. By the time you go through all that, not only do we know our worth and love ourselves but we know who’s got our back and who we can count on. Most older lesbians I know are pretty successful and happy by the time we make it past the first 30 years. I’ve always known this about us but am glad to see that others see that in us as well. Thank you Chris for that. ❤ And lastly, this podcast was AMAZING!! A big thank you Chris for all the incredible advice, book recommendations, knowledge and value you’ve given over the many years I’ve watched your videos. And same to you as well Sean for the course that got me ramped up as a creator in my fifties and for all the great videos. Your questions of Chris here blew it out of the water and Chris was a master as usual! Thank you both! 🙏

I’m from the West - my people whose skin looks worse than an old leather saddle in Death Valley didn’t use sunscreen in their youth. You can also do your future 50 year old self a favor & avoid tanning beds. Don’t be stupid like me by baking in them & then have precancerous chunks taken out of your body when you get older. My Dermatologist said the tanning bed was the most dangerous for skin cancer. Now I’m missing pieces of me 😅 - out of my calf, back and my formerly lovely shaped left breast. 😢 Skin cancer kills and it’s a real thing, people!

I think the quote about borrowing and stealing hinges on the difference between borrowing and stealing. When you borrow something, it is with the intention of using it temporarily and eventually giving it back. When you steal something, it is with the intention of making it your own and using it forever. To borrow a technique or approach would be to use it on a temporary basis, but to forget about it and/or fall back to your previous approach. To steal a technique or approach is to use it forever, adapting it to your own style and proceeding to claim ownership.

On AI… there’s a difference between saying “Here’s a new program or a new medium that allows you to draw in a more efficient way” as opposed to “click this button and this AI will draw it for you” I’m all for being “relevant” by knowing how to use new tech, but there’s no doubt that certain kinds of AI is looking to replace us rather than improve us.. Chris Do seems to be okay with that 🤔 Still listening! Good questions Sean!
@theswych

Exactly! Huge difference between a tool and a 'done for you' program.
@mariomills
@mariomills 6 месяцев назад
There are levels to this. True, some AI can do the done it for you, but an artist can elevate that even more. He will blend different done it for you programs, and combine them in a way only an artist can make, which will produce an entirely different thing
@theswych
@theswych 6 месяцев назад
@@mariomills Unfortunately as a working Artist I can tell you that true 'ART' has already been mostly replaced with mass produced 'junk' that has replaced skilled craftsmen in every genre. AI will simply put the nail in the coffin and those making money from it are fine with that. No judgment, just my opinion.
@user-ex3mx7hk4l
@user-ex3mx7hk4l 6 месяцев назад
@@theswych Nothing can replace ‘high touch’, REAL art produced by REAL humans. Artificial intelligence art is fake and therefore will not be able to gain a majority market share, IMO. For example, I just overpaid an artist for a small painting of a stone wall covered with flowers that reminded me of my favorite vacation. If it was mass produced by a computer there is no way I’d have spent that money. The REAL artists signature in the corner means everything to me & also increases the resale value. 👍
@theswych
@theswych 6 месяцев назад
@@user-ex3mx7hk4l I think you missed my point. I don't mean to sound snobbish but the majority of people have no clue nowadays of the difference between 'real' art and fake knock-offs! They'd rather pay 50 bucks at Target or TJ Maxx for their wall art and $1 per cup at the Dollar store for their ceramics than by Artisan hand goods! They don't recognize the 'soul vibration: that comes with 'human high touch' products. (And I'm not just talking about poor or cheap people.) 😔AI is faster and cheaper and I don't know why these people can't see the handwriting on the wall. 🫤

Superb interview, thanks! Hahaha, that's why I left my performing art behind (around 25 years ago) and just having plain what is: say yes what yes and no what no. My spouse does not like it, but I hate acting and only being the great pretender (like the song, not the sung). Cheers!

I homeschool my son now. We cover mostly skills he will need in the future. AI work is on the agenda daily. I'm thinking of vlogging the process

HIs question about the "soul" at about 5min in gave me a thought that I havent really heard being talked about...the "soul" cannot be "out" of anything but rather, the "soul" is defined and determined by the receiving party of whatever the thing is. For example: If there's an image that evokes a feeling in the person viewing it, the fact it was created by AI or not becomes irrelevant and we should stop feeding that narrative. That feeling lives on in the viewer and is then reflected in many ways, big and small, throughout their life. Thoughts?
