The best coach in basketball today. Smart, cocky, confident and remarkably insightful in human nature. This includes the players who love him, and some coaches who are envious.of his abilities
The title is misleading. Geno never "takes a jab at Muffett McGraw". He actually deflects attempts by the media who are trying to goad him into doing so.
Exactly. And the game is played on the floor, not with coaches ' lip service. As a coach, I never bought into that "locker room material" stuff anyway. Gino has been at the top of the mountain since Pat S. has been gone. Now Muffet wants to be there and that makes for a good rivalry. Like any woman she wants to prove she can coach also. Lace 'em up and let's play the game!
the title of this clip misrepresents what geno said. he didn't disrespect muffet or ND. NBA coaches don't have Tupperware parties when competing for a title. when the women's NCAA championship is won, even ESPN which televised the event all but ignores the outcome. nobody calls talk shows wanting to talk about women's basketball. geno is trying to create some "sizzle" in the women's game. he once referred to tennesse as "the evil empire." that's funny! but does anyone take that remark seriously?
Why this old clip popped up in my feed I don’t know, but watched it and remembered when this was happening. I respect the hell out of geno, but I do get what McGraw was saying. The game is missing Pat Summit and a Pat Summit torchbearer. I think Dawn Staley has tried to encapsulate some of that Pat energy. Geno has been great for the game and lord knows UConn has been great for the game. But IMO what Geno has missed the mark on in an otherwise great career is taking on the outwardly position of being the “dean” if you will of women’s college basketball after Pat died. Pat was very much about Tennessee and her program, but she was also about having a hand in growing the game, being a mentor when needed, and taking on the responsibilities of being the top dog. Geno is about UConn and if UConn is great the game will grow. That he can sit in his silo and not take on the role and speak specifically to the issues that the sport deals with. To his credit, he will schedule and play a tough schedule, often away from home where UConn’s name will draw well. That part of the game is needed, so kudos to him for that. But I appreciate that Dawn has stepped up and understands that the people in and outside of the sport look to her as a leader so she embraces that. It was telling IMO when Shea Ralph, a former UConn player and former long time assistant now HC at Vandy, said they no one has checked in on her more since taking the job at Vandy than Dawn Staley. Geno just wants to coach his team and go home.
"Takes a jab"? When? Geno didn't take any shots at Ann (which is her real name, not "Muffett"). The reporters tried to goad him into saying certain things, and he refused to take the bait. Geno, as always, just tells it like it is.
The bit at the end about "acting like girls" -- expecting to go out and have a bottle of wine after trying to beat each others brains out moments before -- that is what I think the title refers to. I can imagine a lot of "feminists" who would object to that characterization of "girl behavior" even though many men might find it amazing precise.
Sorry Charlie, disagree vehemently. I didn't see the action/reaction you describe. And if that happened, my guess Geno isn't proud of it upon reflection. You must be buying into Muffett's assertion that only women can coach women. That's total BS and after Pat Summit, Geno has done more to elevate women's NCAA basketball on a national level than any other coach. Muffet's recent assertion that she will never hire a male assistant coach is discrimination and an open look into what she sees as the real competition in her game. The growth of women's basketball has been huge. I personally watch only women's basketball because I can relate to the excellence in how they play the game in a manner in which it was meant to be played. Average sized (for the most part) athletes playing excellent team basketball. For her to openly discriminate against men, regardless of their skills and experience in helping her to continue to build and maintain ND's program is wrong, and I hope the AD or some other high administrator takes her out to the woodshed. Look behind Geno at his bench of dedicated assistant coaches. All women ... go figure. Look behind Kim Mulkey on her bench. At least 2 middle-aged men supporting a team and coach to win a national title. Don't give me this crap about what gender a coach has to be.
Muppet (my name for her) throws a hissy fit when UConn beats them. She has won only one National Championship - why - she has great players, so guess she doesn't coach that well. One thing I noticed watching ND/UConn is Muppet does not involved her other coaches in the huddles whereas Geno does. This indicates to me that she thinks she is the end of, be all. Why bother to have assistants if you don't use them.
+Pat Finn - - -- - - "Muppet" has had the talent now for @ least 4 years & she has not even gotten to the point where they played a CLOSE game with U.Conn........meaning coming down to the final seconds/minutes. It might be time for a change.....ND has had the talent AND depth to @ least lose @ the buzzer. I keep seeing U.Conn dominate them. The 2 teams are closer in talent than the scores have been.
He gets his rocks off, when he beats Muffet. Men should not coach women basketball, that is unfair. Men have more time to dedicate to to sports. ND can't recruit good players like Geno. Geno is JOKE in women sports!
are you joking or serious? if you're serious, how do men have more time to dedicate to sports than women? how is he a joke in women's sports? because they win all the time? i was never a geno fan, but after listening to some of his interviews, and how he treats his team like people, not like women or men, but as people, that's something to respect if you're serious, then you're probably also someone wearing a safety pin so that others know you don't approve of trump and that you are "safe"
Geno has ruined UConn in my perspective. Yes the have had numerous undefeated seasons. Numerous National titles. My question is how many of the seasons and titles or legit. In my perspective probably 60% are not legit.
That's absurd. How can any of the championships not be legit. They play the best team's year in and year out, and they win. Is Geno paying the refs, changing the scoreboard, or having the opposing team to lay down ? A pretty stupid statement.
