A new state-of-the art GenoMar Breeding and Genetic Centre, located in Tocantins, Brazil was officially opened 21st October, 2022. The facility represent a strategic investment to support the development of a profitable and sustainable tilapia industry in Brazil, Latin America and the world.
The breeding center is the first of its kind for tilapia species in the Latin American region and will have sufficient capacity to manage GenoMar´s breeding programs as well as to produce parent stock for its distribution operations. The new facility will enhance GenoMar´s already unrivalled distribution infrastructure in Brazil and support its expansion efforts in the region with Colombia and Mexico in the spotlight.
This new breeding center will enable us to meet our future infrastructure needs for managing several tilapia breeding programs like GenoMar, Aquabel and AquaAmerica and deliver genetic improvement to our customers at a faster rate.
The location of the center in Tocantins aligns with GenoMar’s policy of establishing production facilities in regions with very low climatic risks. The water supply is from well water and spring water, all with unique physical, chemical, and microbiological qualities and no impact from other aqua- or agriculture activity. In addition, the water is at all times mechanically filtered and disinfected with powerful UV light.
The breeding center has a high biosecurity level and an effective surveillance program for the most important tilapia pathogens worldwide. The introduction of new animals into a country or a production unit is well recognized as one of the main routes for the spread of diseases when carried out indiscriminately and without meeting the zoo sanitary requirements established by the countries.
In January 2022, we achieved an important milestone by accrediting our own quarantine facility at the respected Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA) in Brazil. With this accreditation we can fulfill Government requirements to undertake a period of quarantine with any fish being imported or exported. A series of infrastructure requirements and standard operating procedures focused on maintaining a high standard of biosecurity is required to achieve such accreditation.
