Interview was actually my first LP from this outstanding band! I first heard the band on the German radio in 1976 with "On Reflection" from the album "Freehand" and immediately fell in love!❤ Since the record dealer couldn't sell the "right" album (Freehand), I took "Interview" with me! By the way, it's the only album I know of that has a German book about it! I think it's even a thesis?! In any case, I haven't stopped loving and adoring Gentle Giant since then! In my opinion the best band that has ever lived! Rest in peace, Ray 😢

OMG !! I didn't know Ray died. 🙏🏾💜 Peace to his family and friends ❣ He, and all of the GG crew, brought SO much joy and beauty to people's lives. We've been enriched many times over. I'm grateful beyond words for all his work ! While we all must go, ... still I'm sad . And I'm so sorry to find out he had to struggle long with health problems. "Free Hand" and "Interview" were my introduction to Gentle Giant. They came into the home simultaneously. I was studying classical violin at the time. My brother always knew what to play me first when he introduced a new band or artist to me. In this case it was "On Reflection". Knowing nothing at all about the band, I listened to the albums as pure music and loved them both, but perhaps 'Interview' a little bit more. It was so extreme! Every track was a work of art. I love those albums to this day, and I owe Gentle Giant a great deal as a musician. Great video! Can't wait for part two.

I was introduced to progressive rock in 2002 by our flute player, Cheung Yiu Munn. He was then 18 and from Hong Kong...yet he was superbly knowledgeable about late 1960s and early 1970s progressive rock groups. Prior to meeting him, my love of music focused exclusively on baroque and 20th century classical works...and nothing else! Well, after sampling 2 or 3 tracks each of Jethro Tull, Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, The Family and Van Der Graff Generator (and only The Family really impressed me at the time) I listened to Gentle Giant and it happened to be this album. I could not believe what I heard! I listened to the entire album...then made a mug of tea, rolled a cigarette and listened to the whole album again. By the end of the month I had purchased ALL their studio albums (which means, of course, I had to endure the shabby pop pap of the final 3 which, though superbly played, are not impressive as music, at least compared to what came before it). From Giant to Interview there's not a single track I don't enjoy. Three Friends (especially Schooldays) and Octopus (especially Knots, Boys In The Band and Think Of Me With Kindness) are probably my favourites. Our own group, UNIT, began to explore progressive rock territory as a result of my acquaintance with all this music and our sound changed accordingly although we never sounded like Gentle Giant. How could we? I mean, how could any group sound like them? Splendid stuff.

Thanks for this roundtable which was more than nostalgia (which it was in part), but music history as well. Hearing the discussion of "cowboy piano" added to my appreciation of the DIY nature of '60's and '70's rock! (By the time I was studying recording in the '80's it was a bit easier to create a tack piano sound with the then new Eventide Harmonizer.)

What I'd like to know also is how they did the part after the "cowboy piano," with the low, "elastic" nearly human voice odd rhythm overlayed with Gary playing the recurring theme. It is very weird and very much appreciated, of course.

The first time I heard "Design" was my introduction to GG, the whole Interview album. A friend brought it over and we got stoned on weed, and we were very stoned by the time "Design" came on. From there, got my own copy and gradually came to really love it. It has a narrative structure of sorts, with an exposition in the third person before shifting to the first person reflecting on the passing of time and his dubious place in it. But there's no denouement. Just a stare into the abyss with the awful, rancorous epiphany that the "years drift by, never for me." Maybe it's time to break out the Sartre. As Derek posed the question, why would a band do such a thing? For that matter, why would Crimson do "Larks Tongue in Aspic" or Todd Rundgren do "Freak Parade"? I suppose because these things hadn't been done before. It was the '70s after all.

I remember reading this name Gentle Giant from time to time, but never heard anything from them on the radio or somewhere else - and none of my schoolfriends did either. In pop magazines I saw pictures of guys obviously having fun on stage, but dressed up like Robin Hood (especially Gary if I remember right) and playing similar funny "hoodian" instruments. So I absolutely couldn´t figure out what kind of music would come out of them. Then a friend recorded the whole album Free Hand from radio - that was possible back then - and I was totally stunned by the very first song "Just the same" already. It couldn´t be further away from what I´d expected which was nothing great. Some kind of upbeat Jazz-Rock with lyrics or what - never had heard anything like that. It took me a while to "work" through the rest of the album I admit, but finally I got it. They taught me a universe of music that was unknown to me, but I don´t wanna get too "pretentious" myself now. So I conclude with the simple fact that GG became my favourite band and music since then. Thanks guys!

I’m so thankful to see my heroes of Gentle Giant share their thoughts. I suppose these remixes are a catalyst for that so thank you. Personally though, I prefer the original Gentle Giant mixes. Interview is an incredible album. Such an apropos concept and theme. I love the songs Interview and Timing the most. Also, their live versions on Under Construction kick ass!

I remember seeing you guys about 3 times in Germany. What about Frank, your roadie? He got us into a Genesis/Peter Gabriel concert back in the States when my brother Stan, of Happy the Man, and the rest of us arrived outside of Pittsburgh. You see, we realized after driving up 3 hours that NONE OF US HAD TICKETS or MONEY. So, Frank recognized my brother and I. He let us become temporary roadies to bring in Genesis equipment. Which we did! Anyways, GG was the best.

"Timing" has the most changes in the mix. Took me by surprise in a good way.

Saw them at Avery Fisher Hall in NYC after the Playing The Fool came out. Saw lots of prog shows then, Yes Tull and Genesis album after album. They were my big three. But Giant was different. Exquisite. Nothing less than magnificent. Such accuracy playing and singing. Not that Steve Howe was less accurate but the writing of Giant was so pinpoint structured.

Que lindo seria poder verlos en un escenario yo creo que seria algo especial y no imposible

Lamentablemente John Weathers ya no puede tocar la batería debido a enfermedad, y Ray Shulman falleció el año pasado, jamás regresarán al escenario.

I love it when Gary says he isn't counting really. It's about learning phrases that fit together. That's how I feel it too. But obviously that doesn't help be a good musician 😀. Now I'm not very happy about this interview because now I have to spend money to buy this new version !!!!
