==What is the reason that you would use Gentoo?==
After many months, the much requested Gentoo review is here. This time, I attempt to explain what Gentoo is, and who it is for...as it is a very tricky beast to limit in one box.

1:15 -ish, "...don't recommend using Gentoo unless you've been accustomed to the Linux ecosystem for at least a year." I gotta offer an alternative viewpoint: I tried Gentoo after about three months of distro-hopping between the usual suspects, and although it was *COMPLETELY* agonizing, I learned more about Linux than I ever could have on Ubuntu, Fedora, what have you. TL;DR: Feel free to dive in if you, a) Don't mind the pain, and more importantly, b) Want to learn something.

the only thing I ever learned from torturing myself with gentoo's install process was how to use chroot, lmao. I'm sad to say I never was able to get a GUI installed. complained about not being able to find xorg/xserver in the repository. I probably would have been happy to have even gotten lightdm, with a window manager but yeah, I gave up on it after 4 days of tinkering and not finding any useful information.

If you want a more minimal one, personally I recommend Arch. Arch makes you do all the partitioning, etc yourself, which will teach you a lot. It won't, however, be quite as insane to set up and configure as gentoo.

I'm a bit mixed on Gentoo Linux. It meets all requirements I want in a desktop system and I enjoy using Gentoo Linux; it also has a lot of annoying points, mainly the compiling, USE flags, and configuring kernel. The compiling just takes time and resources. I can't find any information on how to best manage USE flags. And configuring the kernel was the reason I stopped using Gentoo the last time I used it. A kernel update had removed options that I needed to get the graphics card to work, and the wiki had not updated that information until my system was so irreparable that I had delete everything.

I'm a Gentoo user and can completely agree that it is complicated. I am NOT good at it in any shape or form, i dont know how to troubleshoot, or do anything beyond install it and setup the DE. all i do with Gentoo is use it as my daily OS and play games. That's it. I'm not a Linux elite or someone who does development. I just play around, so for me Gentoo is just as complicated as anybody else. That said, I love Gentoo and there is not much any other distro I would rather use.

Have you tried Arch, and if so would you mind telling your exp with it and how it compares with G? I'm thinking of getting a virtual box on my arch system and having fun coding Gentoo. then when i feel ready, switch over from arch all the way to gentoo. greetings from finland.
@imzesok
@imzesok 9 лет назад
 Gentoo is a completely roll your own system, unlike Arch(I'm a little biased here), which has the decency to at least provide you with complete config files, that only require you to comment out what you don't need(provided you install it "the Arch Way" that is). it's essentially Linux from scratch. the Handbook for Gentoo sadly is so far out of date that it's really not even useful anymore, so if you do decide to install it you have to take bits and pieces from 10 different guides just to get a working install(no guide for getting a GUI that I've seen though). It would be really nice if someone would update the handbook to reflect all the changes from the 2004 release to the current. Arch on the other hand though, has such well written documentation(even a complete newbie guide you can pretty much copy and paste), that it's pretty hard to go wrong. I've run Arch for 2 months, and nothing has ever broken on me, I'm pretty happy with it... well I was. just upgraded my video card from a geforce GT 210 to an AMD r7 260x, so I need to reinstall. like gentoo, though there's no gui package manager. but to run updates and install things are pretty easy. "sudo pacman -Syu" updates your system, "sudo pacman -S " installs the package and it's dependencies, if they're in the repository. chances are though if it's not in the official repository, it'll be in the AUR(community based repo). the nice thing is... no waiting several hours to compile your desktop environment. I've tried and failed epically to get a full system install for gentoo + a GUi 4 times now. Arch I got done in the first try... may have taken 6 hours to do it, but I had a completely working system and MATE desktop(was in virtualbox the first time). Some kind soul actually made a really easy way to install Arch, called Evolution linux, and it completely automates everything. there used to be a project that did the same for gentoo but they've since abandoned it in favor of making their own spin of Fedora I'm sad to say.

Pretty impressive video for when it was made. I remember trying Gentoo in the early 2000s shortly after it came out. I was using FreeBSD as a desktop and I read about how alot of the inspiration for Gentoo came from FreeBSD. I figured it couldn't be much worse thank FreeBSD 5.8. Boy was I wrong. On a nearly 20 year old potato computer with a net connection that barely qualified as broadband it was a trainwreck. Never really messed with it again.

I don't get how Gentoo is supposed to be complicated. If you think configuring your system via a GUI is "easier" than text files, you're suffering from a very bad case of software-stockholm-syndrome. I've ported my Gentoo system over 3 different machines over more than 8 years. simply copy the old config files and you have the same system. No need to click around through sub-menus and half a dozen different applications each time you get a new machine. No tedious new system versions, and if you don't have enough power to compile everything (read chromium) thjere's binary builds for that, which install as fast (actually faster) than on ubuntu ;)

Maybe because compiling stuff from source in every other distro may be convoluted, as it is not something you are normally supposed to do, it is assumed that gentoo people like BDSM. I can assure you they do not, at least not necessarily. Compiling sources in Gentoo is not more complicated than doing 'apt-get install foobar' in ubuntu. The rest of the process is handled automatic and requires no user participation. Gentoo's package management system, portage, is awesome. That's where this distro shines.
@HoreaChristian
@HoreaChristian 7 лет назад
In principle I agree. "nothing is more easy and simple to *use* than a well designed GUI ". Yes. But I don't really want to "use" my system's configuration manager. I want to optimize and automate it. Basically my point is that a *good* GUI can simplify manual engagement - but we're moving away from that, so let's roll with the best tools for automatization. Scripting, CLI, Gentoo ;)

Currently I use the distribution Funtoo (Gentoo improved version, made by the same creator of Gentoo). I'm not very experienced user, but I understand that many dislike the way of the Gentoo (or Funtoo). These distributions are aimed at enthusiasts who like lots of flexibility and have fun solving package conflicts. Not for novice users who just want to turn the system on, and ready to use.

Gentoo seems to be a nice option for people that want a very customized Linux system with full control on it. Just like Arch, but more built specifically for their hardware. But personally, I'd rather stick to a distribution like Ubuntu or Fedora, where I don't have to install and set up my system only with configuration files and terminal commands. I like things to be as easy and stable as possible, but still very advanced under the hood - that is also why I love my Fedora installation, and I am not thinking about replacing it for now. What can I say, I like tinkering with Linux and trying out new software or technologies. Now don't get me wrong here please, I respect the principle of D.I.Y. distros like Arch or Gentoo and I am not trying to offend any Arch/Gentoo user here. I like their approach, I like that they are both rolling releases, I like that you can customize the heck out of both distros. It's just that I don't think I'm ready for something that advanced like Gentoo. I had an Arch install a while ago - but like I said, I still like pre-configured (configured as in it has a desktop, a browser, Samba and all other important stuff for me OOTB) distros much better. :-)
@adrianlowenberg

***** Well, I don't want to get into the systemd vs openrc conflict, but Arch supports OpenRC too (if you like a more UNIX, though slower start :P)! Btw, there are Arch derivatives too, so do not compare install difficulties, in both cases they are as complicated as you want them to be.

After configuring portage chrooting and everything. Can Gentoo even emerge the damn packages you need to boot your initial install. Without fucking up and crashing halfway through the compile process on atleast half of them, or sitting with infinite compile (quad core MAKEOPTS="-j5" ) time on a single *.c file? In my experience with it, it cannot. Ether the gentoo boot image is fucked up with bugs that have been there for years, or funtoo which was a little bit better bjorked a couple simple compiles on necesary addons you need to add to the base system before you can even boot. Stuff broken in the install guide that they know hasn't worked for awhile but is still present in the guide without work arounds written in the guide. Even after configuring the install to the point were you need to add a few ebuilds to the system of essential software you're going to need to boot, all the builds ended up with compile failed. In the experience I've had with Gentoo and Funtoo its all breakage shit.
@steven1671
@steven1671 7 лет назад
That moment when you compile packages for 10 hours only for it to crash on some random error. Fixing the error and restarting the build results in another, completely unrelated error. Then the process continues, and pretty soon Gentoo updates take impossibly long. As soon as you fix the error, a new update is released along with new build errors.

Dude suriously. I have used allot of distros over the past 18 years. I used to sware by readhat until they stoped it at version 9. Gentoo is the only rock solid reliable everyday distro that respects 101% of the users flexability to compile software any which way from sunday. What users have missed out on over the past 20 years on windows is full control of their computers. Gentoo allows code to be moded, then re-ebuilded, checksumed, placed in the tree and installed in seconds

@Infinitely Galactic, Q&A: Isn't the main problem with Gentoo that you must be, and must want to be, an expert Linux admin to want to install and use it? There is so much emphasis on customising and optimising it that it almost becomes all there is to Gentoo. It's like a "have the best custom Linux" contest. Devs like me just want to get the OS, install a tool chain and get going. I use OpenSUSE. I don't want to spend 60% of my life tweaking the OS. I want a 10:90 mix of tweaking and working.

Nice explain of Gentoo. This was the first Linux that got me back into that scene since quitting Slackware for WinNT. I love Gentoo for that customisation. My problem with the Windows world is the built in crap that I don't want, but as Linux distros have added all that too, why bother? The build time is still a problem at home, and in my "down time". Can you review Frugalware, which is my happy medium. I think it deserves some love. ^_^
@FireicerCooper
@FireicerCooper 11 лет назад
No it is not lol. GNU/Linux software is distributed as source code. Binaries are just the outcome of a compiler. GNU and Linux software are all distributed in source code not binaries. Gentoo respects that with a automated ./configure, make && make install all in one command called emerge. it is that simple dont complicate it. GNU and Linux kernel are all source code free software. You dont buy it so compiling it yourself is but a small price to pay to get it for free.
@FireicerCooper
@FireicerCooper 11 лет назад
The problem with that is when a person wants it to do something extra that does not have a button to click. Systems/hardware are so different that you can not make a button for every single situation that a user would want. This means that a GUI needs to be able to deliver hundred of thousand different options. You fancy programing all that? This is why M$ windows forces its users to only a few standard options. GNU/Linux is the OS that can do anything you want it to.

On an 8-core machine (with 4GB of RAM) and a piddly 8GB of HDD space it takes about 20 minutes to get a working, fully up-to-date, bootable system, and maybe an additional 40 minutes to get a GUI on top of that. This clean install cold boots to shell (not GUI) in about 4 seconds, which includes all system-level daemons I use such as MongoDB, Nginx, and Postgresql. :D

I have googled it and I don't find anything that the difference in speed is very small. Have you run some tests? Would be interesting to see the results! And how about Arch? I don't see the point spending hours/days/weeks fucking around compiling shit on a personal computer. I imagine it might be a lot more useful for setting up embedded systems though, where you'd want everything carefully optimised.

A platform is only as good as the things it supports, and the things that support it. If you're running a bunch of machines that require Exchange for example then running BSD isn't really a good match for you is it no matter how much you can "hack" it? You'll need to be running some flavour of Windows Server even if it's within a VM in order to then run Exchange which you rely on.

I can't really talk with confidence as I've never successfully installed Gentoo before, but in my opinion Arch Linux has a better balance between speed awarded and the slope of the learning curve. If I really needed a program to utilize every optimization of my CPU, why not just use Arch Linux's ABS system for that particular program? I guess I'm just not seeing why I should learn and use Gentoo over Arch... but I am interested in just trying Gentoo for fun lol

Gentoo is freaking easy to maintain once installed, personally I find Crux better as it's minimal, I just don't like the fact gentoo dev's patch everything... keep it upstream. I've been using Linux since late '97 or the beginning of '98, I'm use to source and I much prefer upstream as fixes are much quicker than distribution specific maintainers. I do prefer portage over.. um the basic tools crux has but like the setup of crux packages.

There is no doubt that Arch is very customizable, but it simply doesn't have the infrastructure to be as customizable as Gentoo in a sane way. USE flags make compiling a dream and build options persist through the next update. The whole way Porage tree's work makes it very easy to break away and create your own branch for some special project you have. Forcing specific versions of a package is also very easy to do.

Installed Gentoo successfully once on about my 5th attempt over a six month period. In the end I abandoned it as I found no real difference in speed and apps sometimes took ridiculous amounts of time to compile like 7 hours for Chromium on my Acrer Aspire 5745G laptop. I thought when I update I am going to have to go through this labourious compile over and over again. In the end I settled on Sabayon which is a Gentoo derivative and has great performance minus all the tedious configuration.

people always complaning how optimised macs but not their pc. well gentoo is a chance to do that by yourself :P from the start you decide whatever you want to put or not, which setting you want or not. ofc it takes sometime for people like me but when you finish that you have really solid os. currently i dont use it on my desktop but when i decide to move on i will surely use gentoo once more

I believe USE changes and Changes to USE Flags are entirely different changes !!!.. Please correct me if I am wrong.. I believe when you tried installing Chromium.. All you needed to change was /etc/portage/package.use and add the Packages that it pointed to... Please pardon my pointing out things.. Regards Rajat P

Here's a tip, keep your make.conf minimal, you're going to be using USE="flags here" emerge package_name a lot so remember what you use and edit your package.use file instead of flooding your make.conf as you MAY just want that option added for a specific package not globally uh hem, directx for vlc for example.

Well done, mate! On my system, I have not yet found a distro with Linux drivers for my Realtek HD audio (part of mt Asus X99 USB 3.1 MB), nor for my Corsair M95 Gaming Mouse or my K95 RGB keyboard. Would Gentoo solve these issues and others? :-)

I just noticed you don't have -march or -mtune set, any specific reasons? I personally use -march=corei7 and -mtuine=native also added -msse3 to my CFLAGS. You should also have ALSA_CARDS, INPUT_DEVICES, AND VIDEO_CARDS set as well. LINGUAS="en_US" is nice but I don't compile locale specific.

If you want a small distribution you can use ubuntu minimal and install openbox with the --no-recommends option. Ive used Gentoo in the past and the gains these days are barely noticable. When bandwidth was limited, yes downloading source is less network intensive than binaries but many Linux distros are modular and package based.
@computernerd8157

I don't get how most of the Linux community believes in noobs distros. From my point of view systems like Ubuntu are more advanced then stuff like like Gentoo and Slack, unless you have a very specific reason to want to use these distros, why bother? In the end, Linux is Linux, they all use the same programs, functions the same just different commands under the hood. I believe the only thing that Linux needs to be perfect is a unified package management system. Maybe they can keep their systems but all migrate to a universal package system that all Distros can take from.

Gentoo seriously isn't difficult. It was the first Linux distro I installed (my previous install was FreeBSD) when I was twelve on an old crappy Gateway Celeron. If you can read (and have patience) then you'll be fine.

Compiling from source isn't that big of a deal any more. The first time I installed gentoo in 2001, it took almost 2 weeks to build KDE. Now emerge -e runs in less than six hours on my laptop.

Hello Pavel ! Calculate or Sabayon. Sabayon updates once a week, sometimes once over two weeks. Calculate updates twice a week but it is closer to a real Gentoo. If you wait a while there is also Redcore which has LXQt as DE. Best regards, Serge

If used in production environment, distcc will prove useful. Also, there is binary package support, so one can compile the software on one computer and distribute it to a whole bunch of servers, thus saving time.

What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

For demonstration purposes I'd guess. Tying sudo every time and typing in the PW would be quite time consuming / require more, in my opinion quite annoying, jump cuts.

I'm sure Arch and Gentoo nearly equal in terms of boot speeds and performance, but ultimately it will boil down to the software installed on your system. I have two Arch systems which I use, one uses awesome as a wm and boots into the userspace in 8.79s, and the other uses XFCE and boots into userspace in 14.5s. Other than that, they're identical.
