Today Jib and I are back at Bangkok's largest park, The Rama IX Park in Bangkok, Thailand. This park is simply amazing and has so much to offer. In today's video, we take a look at the park's massive Geodesic Dome which houses a cactus garden. this is a beautiful structure that is both functional and easy on the eyes. Once you start to realize all of the space Rama IX park has to offer you can easily understand how this is the biggest park in Bangkok.
While we are out walking today Jib and I share our thoughts on how we balance form and function in our design work. The world at large has no shortage of things that look amazing yet fall short in the function department as well as things offer amazing function but are so ugly you have to turn away else the image be burned into your brain.
We both take slightly different approaches to this balance, but both strive to create beautiful things that offer as much function as possible.

I remember that movie... But the place that movie was filmed was called Bioshere. it was used for a few different experiments, I believe a university owns it now.

Thailand is like its own biosphere......and those tall ones outside were Madagascar Palms actually not cacti...they look like they’re not in full bloom yet this time of year...I have about 10 on my property....the thorns make great blow darts...

Form and function: Isn't a geodesic dome (or other types of domes) the one design that is bringing them together as no other design can? I've dozens of designs for interiors of various sizes of geodesic domes that provide the proof of concept that (as a home) geodesic domes are the most comfortable, energy friendly, easy to build, cheap to build, and above all the most satisfying homes to live in. There are literally thousands of affidavits of dome dwellers about this. Interiors of geodesic domes require a different approach, a creative and innovative one. If one has that attitude, wonderful things can happen.

@@IdeaStudioBKK Well, get ready to see more and more of them in Thailand. We will start production of geodesic dome homes in the second half of this year, in Thailand. Sizes from 16 to 30 feet diameter. With full support for building, interior outfit and design. Easy do it yourself packages for highly competitive prices. We plan to bring single shell and insulated shells versions. It will bring home ownership within financial reach of virtually anyone in Thailand and abroad.

@@IdeaStudioBKK I expect to start building a first show model of 16-17 feet diameter latest in the second half of this year (2022). That show model will be build on our property in Nong Khai. This is also the place where we most likely start the manufacturing of the domes.

Stable synthetic carbon molecules in geodesic-shaped balls called "Bucky balls". Place called Bioshere 2 north of Tucson, AZ. Old hippie commune/compound north of Phoenix, AZ, called Arcosanti. Just a few of the uses of the geodesic dome here in AZ. Too bad that more has not been done with the design. Funny that they use it to keep rain from rotting the cacti & succulents in BKK ! I know Bucky Balls, and of course Bioshere, I believe it's still in use, owned by a university I think. When I lived in Rhode Island I owned a lot of land and was considering getting a geodesic dome kit and building one on the back of my property. I ended up moving to Cleveland before I pulled the trigger on it, but would be an awesome project.

Thanks, yeah, this is a great park we love it here. We have a few more videos banked from here for this week, and we still have at least 10 more planned to go back and film at some point. so much to see there.

Hey Joe, Thanks! I actually made that hat for Jib a few years ago from some dead stock soft pink linen I found on a sourcing run. The park ranger was super nice, and no issue at all, just move on and film some other beautiful areas of the park.
