I totally understand what Geoff means when you love something and you're good at it, but at the same time you're very aware that you can't be "the best". It really grinds you down, it's great that he was able to let go of it.

TBH I think most gamers really feel this when they join online. You are the best at halo, the best at smash, the best at soul calibur. Then you join online... It doesn't matter if you crush everyone at your block or your state. Once you are online you realize your true level. And you can say, hey, im in top 1000 or even top 500 but is not the same. You are just not the best, you are just better than average.

I’m pretty sure Gus is like a thousand years old and just takes memories from ancient times then repurposes them for modern times. He never runs outta stories even all these years later.

As someone who used to be in a bowling league: there are so many people out there like Geoff who will utterly demolish your competitive spirit with their utter domination, while also sinking themselves into a horrific mood because they didn't do as well as they hoped they would. This may or may not be helped by the fact that bowling is one of the few sports that lets you drink alcohol between turns.

For those who don't know, this happens all the time. When you become halfway decent at something that your friends do casually, it changes you. You pick up a spare and try not to act upset when people congratulate you because it should have been a strike. You avert your eyes when one of your friends tries to bowl backward...

Uh I can confirm, spares are good because they carry your scores. Strikes don't help if you're not converting your spares. I'm happy to have a 144 average.

This is one of the best RTAA episodes I've ever seen. There is so much work put into this in so many places it's unbelievable. The facial expressions are perfect and the call center coworker clones are hilarious.

I know the feeling though. When I was a kid, like 6-10 years old, I would bowl consistently over 180, and rocked it. I moved away from Cali, and stopped. Didnt bowl for years. Now Im lucky to break 100. I hate bowling.

I have a friend like Geoff, but its discgolf, rather than bowling. He usually tries really hard to be supportive of his friends and have a good time. But you can really tell when its getting to him. Like, he does so much better than the rest of us, but he'll be like "I only got negative 7, I ahould be going negative 10 at this course".

Every person I have ever known that bowled "on a team" when younger or "semi-pro" and are actually good relative to the norm, has said the same thing as Geoff. They hate bowling.

Geoffs line of "Have you ever been good at something, but not as good as you want to be so it makes you hate that thing" hits very true. That point where its not something you can really do casually with friends because no one has as much fun due to skill gap, but its not something you can do competitively because you arent good enough is a painful feeling.

I loved hearing a longer version of this story on ANMA. There have been snippets of it on the RT podcast and AH videos about how Geoff was semi pro at bowling, but to hear it all laid out and now animated is great!

I love this story because I have a group of work friends that I go out bowling with sometimes, and we're pretty much all Geoff. We all have our own ball, only one or two of us use the glove, and we all have our own shoes, but we all bowl the mid hundreds and sometimes get frustrated that we cant bowl higher consistently. For people who are a little more than casual bowlers, mid hundreds just isn't good enough.

I 100% understand you Geoff. I grew up bowling and shot my first 300 when I was 16 with a 210 average. Now that I’m 28 and don’t bowl much I’m not as good as I once was so now in my mind every time I bowl I think I’m doing bad if I don’t shot over 200
