One Piece has some of the best world building in all of anime and manga, and this is largely thanks to its intricate attention to geography. In this video I give an overview of the world of One Piece and try to explain many of its features using geographic principles from our own world!

@@classical7370 dude Idk, I believe it was some sort of Q&A where it was first brought up, but I don't remember. I do know that more or less since then, there have been multiple people either confirming or denying this, by using facts from the show to calculate the mass of the planet and/or its size. I don't know which one happened first, the math or the question, I don't know how to find it, just search for yourself. I saw it like 3-7 years ago if that helps, I do not care anywhere near enough to go look it up for you. That's the best answer I can give you, just search it man.

I also saw a source that says the One piece world's size is about 2.7 times bigger than Earth, like a super earth, though saying 100x sounded so exaggerated to me since that would mean 100 earths (to me anyway)

@@vicentrostepher5313 oda has never explicitly stated the size of anything, apart from some islands. In the Amazon river we have a thing called pororoca, where the river reverses and the ocean flows inland into the continent for 800km with waves that can reach 6 meters in hight. I think that's a more similar analog to reverse mountain then those waterfalls.

To me one of the most amazing things geographically is the Fishman Island. It's literally an island inside a bubble, and you still get sunlight there even though it's super super deep in the ocean. The fact that the tree's roots go down there is just amazing to see. Other thing I love the most is how the societies adapted into their crazy geographies, you see Water 7 is now floating somewhere at the see because they couldn't handle more tsunamis (and it seems there is the only place with tsunamis ¿). The fact that the world itself is a mystery in One Piece, even the people there don't know how things came to be like this, they don't even know how many islands are out there!!! Imagine if Nami publishes her world map, it would change everything
@lucifer0405

Great video! As a climatologist, I just want to point out that maybe the world of one piece spins differently around the sun and that may be causing the formation of such strong and one directional current (the Grand line) and also having more effects. I say this on the base that the direction of the ocean and wind currents is actually influenced by the Coriolis force, so the rotation of the Earth. Maybe it's an idea worth exploring! Thanks for the great video!

@@AlexT7916 Depends, small and far away moons wouldn't effect it much. But, one piece's world seems to be much larger than ours as all of it's moons are Sphere's(Moons like Mars are too small to become sphere's through gravity.), so i'd assume that the moons in One Piece are somewhere between 1/4th to 1.5x's the size of our own. Our moon is capable of causing tide's with a difference of up to 10-20 feet. It's safe to assume that the One Piece moon we see the most is similar to our own, so that one has a lot of pull, the other's though probably don't have any pull because we can't see them in the night sky and most inhabitants of the world seem to think there's only 1 moon as well(Including the Mink's who are linked to the moon.). I'd say the other 5 moons have no real influence on the oceans of one piece, and that the primary one is most likely similar to our own(Albiet with an ancient civilization on it.)

@Evens27
@Evens27 2 года назад
Maybe, they're not moons. Even though technology in OP world is pretty advanced in some way, the world itself is still extremely basic. Remember that, One Piece story is around 1400/1500 year (Maybe less). They're learning to discover they own world right now, it's not expected accurate knowledge about things out of the planet. I always asked myself, if the OP world has 6 or 7 moons, what's the reason for Oda only draw 1 moon in nocturne panels of the story. And the answer is actually pretty simple: The geocentric theory. That model in Ohara isn't just the planet itself but how they view the solar system, with the earth in the center of everything. This explains why we never saw more than 1 moon from the planet perspective.
@michaelliebow735
@michaelliebow735 2 года назад
If there are multiple moons working on a planet there is a lot of variables to consider. This is part of the reason Newton was stuck at a system of two masses and no more than that. Nowadays I am sure if you look hard enough there is a simulation to show multiple variable mass bodies acting on eachother. The real crazy thing would be if there moons are in a state of tidal lock, the same side always faces the planet, and if it there were if it were all moons or only some of them.

I believe that the four blues are essentially "pushing" against the red line at all times due to both pressure and the irregular presence of such a super continent. It's been implied that the red line is not a natural occurrence so the displacement may have a significant impact on sea currents near the landmass. Nami even notes that as soon as you reach a certain distance from the line, a ship will start to be basically tugged into the currents with no escape.
@TheSnoopKat

The most interesting part of the One Piece world for me is the Sky Islands! Specifically the types of clouds (always wanted to be a cloud). The idea that there are Sea Clouds that can float in the air and hold your ship at the same time is awesome. I also liked how Oda fleshed out the other clouds for them to use architecturally. Dials, all that. You should definitely do more videos. You did a great job with this one!

This was a great video, I felt like I learned a lot. My favorite geographic/island thing is One Piece is really the Sky Islands. Those obviously most likely could never exist in the world we live in, but looking at the sky islands it gives me a real sense of adventure. When first seeing Skypiea I was honestly amazed at how different it was and how the culture there is different from any other One Piece island or country. That is definitely one of the things I enjoy about One Piece the most is that every island and every country feels as though it's unique in it's own way, in not only culture but just how it looks geographically as well.

Something to consider about the climates on various islands are the effects of Devil Fruits. We've seen that on one particular island, Punk Hazard where the fight between Akainu and Aokiji took place. Even two years after that fact the island is Still divided into a hot and cold side. You'd think that after all this time the climate on it would average out and return to normal but it didn't. That's why I have a strong suspicion that Awakened Logias have the capacity to permanently alter the climate of an island where they are utilized.

I think the craziest thing about One Piece geography is Enies Lobby. Not just that it's an island suspended over a void or the nature of the Gates of Justice (though that's crazy too), but the fact that it's an All Day Island/Never night Island. It's an island on the equator effectively that is perpetually in the Afternoon. No matter how much I chew it over I can't figure out how that works.

In this case, underwater currents move with such speed and force that when they hit the grand line and/or calm belt they are directed to the carved channels of land where they ascend and maintain speed with wind assistance till they reach the top.

Small correction, this is before this was revealed so its not your fault, but the grand line is not the equator and the redline is not the prime meridian or a meridian in general. Hey, I know nothing about geography but this was super interesting! With the reverse mountain aspect, given that the ships are largely powered by wind, I could see it being probable with the shape of the chanels. To me it looks as if they could potentially work as wind tunnels with the waterways shaped like strange venturis from abnormal water corrosion over time. Combine this with an optical illusion similar to the Electric Brae's and it seems to me as if it's possible (though would be slower and a lot less interesting than what we saw on One Piece). With the calm belt you mentioned the water evaporating; would the sheer mass of all those Seakings in there potentially create enough water displacement to create a similar result? Sorry if I'm showing my ignorance here, I genuinely don't know enough to know how good or bad these ideas are lol

It's quite amazing how knowledgeable Oda-san seems to be about many different unrelated topics. One Piece is filled with real-world references.

I liked the video, but you forgot one thing. You mentioned Tekking's video, but forgot to mention that GEOGRAPHY IS EVERYTHING! Definitely gonna have to dock some points for not mentioning that. XD
