You are now Palau-ed to watch this episode. The world's only place outside of Japan that has Japanese as an official language, bubblewrap-shaped islands and even crazier, you FINALLY get to meet Hannah's husband IAN! Welcome back to OCEANIA! You're gonna say "WOW" to #PALAU! Enjoy!
I’m a Japanese student and study history of Japan. I love not only my country but also Palau. I think Palau is not just a one country but a representation of peace. I pray for those people who died in WW2. Arigatou for reading my comment.
@@piedpiper5687 NHK has released some news about that time actually. But Strong presence of Right Wing parties and Abe family followers are doubling down those. Recent generations for the most part don't even follow politics or the past and even if someone tries to mention these, they will run away from you.
You have to take an airplane then come to Palau. Then there will be a ship that Sonsorol state will charter to go down to the islands. Hope that helps.
13:07 Just a little error: Palau wasn’t taken by Japan during WW2, it was actually taken in WW1 since Japan was allied with the Entente and Germany was part of the Central Powers
Sergio Benito Sulang in Indonesian mean cheers, as in what you would say when you raise your glass and have a toast with someone else. This is probably due to shared Austronesian history between both languages. Interesting 🤔
JAZEMO Naaaaa im full Palauan. Its just that my aunt named me after Sergio Mendez and my dad is Benito and I like using his first name rather than his last name. It makes me unique and it makes me sound like im Italian wich i like 😁 And im a foodie and I love Italian foods hahaha
Im from palau and we eat a lot of fruit bats but we always make sure to clean it good even though we dont hve virus. Come visit some time youll love it
Bat soup mention's aside, whether a country has more covid-19 cases or less, that wouldn't stop spreading new cases simply with travels : just because you can lower the risks only by basic prevention postures and elemental hygiene standards, doesn't mean 100% safety about it eather. @allofyouguys Don't think you worth better than the others in front of some giant pandemia able to strike any human being around the planet.
Bro, I’ve met Filipinos that have been here during our Trust Territory days. Some haven’t been back home since they arrived in Palau in their 20s. Some go back after retirement and some have stayed because they have established a life here.
i just love how these videos arent completely formal, like you guys still make jokes and mess around sometimes, yet you get to the point and make high quality videos thank you :)
12 And if God saves a Catholic, a Protestant, an evangelical, a Branhamist or one member of those missions and ministries, God must remove hell and everyone will go to the Paradise, even Satan. [Ed: The congregation says, “Amen!”]. How can someone reject the living prophet of his time and go to the Paradise? How can someone be saved from the Flood while he has rejected Noah? When the Lord Jesus Christ was on earth, how could someone reject Him and be saved? The whole earth is in the abyss because of these churches.
1:48 the best thing a country can do for its states is allow each one to make a flag! Not only does it provide a sense of local pride, but we also getting amazingly unique designs (just look at those Palau State flags! The complexity and character in them is breathtaking!)
Loads of Japanese words entered into Palauan, especially for more modern inventions and technology. My coworker from Palau knew some basic Japanese, but actually could often understand when people spoke to her in Japanese just because of the sheer number of shared vocabulary. Not to forget, Japanese also had a strange impact on the names in Palau. They didn't have last names until under Japanese rule, so when made to adopt family names, a lot of people used Japanese names. Interestingly, a lot of those names are actually Japanese GIVEN names, not surnames. And occasionally the reverse is true too, that a parent will name their child Tanaka or something, that is a typical Japanese surname. There's been some interesting linguistic studies on the topic of the use of Japanese in Palau.
Thank you for the video. My grandmother is Japanese and from the Palau islands. Grandpa meet her while stationed there during the Korean War I believe. She was most respectful woman I’ve ever met and a beautiful lady in her day.
@@iKirkie We can't even keep peace in our own territories and now you're dreaming of annexing some other countries? 💀 We are also a victim of colonization and occupation of other countries, so let's not do it to others... Especially also in Sabah, which is not ours but our stupid president and his minions have stupidly claimed like jesus, how stupid are our officials. Who the fuck voted for Dudirty for president 🤦
I just returned from a 6 month tour in Palau and I must say it was all love. Shout out to the track team, all the Filipino and Palaun hoopers at spider gym and PCC, Dexter, Coby, Shaun, Grisham, Mikey, I.B., Rubin, Everson, Otis, Azela, PK and the house of pain gang, and everyone that participated in the Balau Games this past June. Thank you for making us feel at home.
Thank you for answering my questions, but what aid is provided to refugees and how much does he receive a monthly stipend? Is there a flight to this island from Malaysia? Greetings to you
@@user-fl5ft8tq7k im not very sure about our procedure with refugees, but i knew of some refugees from syria who lived with at the catholic priests' house for some time. However as a small developing country, we dont have many government resources to take in refugees so i believe this was just out of kindness as we dont usually see many people seeking asylum
hahaha, When I went to spain I was surprised how much is similar to our cruisine in the Philippines. The Spanish have left their Mark here. Even Lechon. Lechon is spanish apparently
When i heard that part where the houses are called "Bai". its basically just like the word for house in philippine languages like "Bahay" in Filipino(Tagalog) or "Balay" in Cebuano Bisaya but compressed into one syllable
Palau and the Philippines were once part of the Spanish East Indies after all. Not to mention we are linguistically and genetically related cause we're Austronesian people.
@@markv1974 that was like thousands of years ago. Yeah we come from the same people (austronesian is more fitting), but because of our long history and isolated culture, I wouldn't say im philippino, cuz im not. That's like saying all white americans are actually english or european, cuz that's where they came from
Honestly, I love the Music subsection by keith, not just because he's awesome, but because music can say so much about culture. You should've implemented it years ago, but oh well...
Fun fact: some food that was mentioned is in Philippines as well, like tinola (chicken soup), ukoy (a cococnut dessert but i could be wrong), and halo halo (another dessert)
The video doesn't even mention average home cooked palauan food. Those are all distinctly Filipino foods that are usually found in restaurants, which palauans do love and eat but they aren't considered palauan food. The only legitimate Palauan food mentioned in the video was "Ukaeb" crab and fruitbat, but even those aren't considered a "typical home cooked meal".
i can't wait. im sure geography now cant wait too as they'll be flooded with millions of pinoys in their youtube channel when they release the Philippine episode :D
America:Palau is mine! Japan:No Palau is mine! Philippines:HES WITH ME SO IS MINE Spain:yo dude stop he's mine! Germany:No Taiwan:I'll give u money China:👁️👁️ Indonesia:he's my best friend so is mine
Japan is a Land of the Raising Sub Palau is a Land of the Raising Moon. I learn a new thing every day and I didn't know Palau had Japanese as the official language.
@salty sailor China is a human rights violator, makes illegal territorial claims in the East and South China seas, uses unfair trade practices, and destabilizes the east and southeast Asian areas. Is that enough reason to "hate" the PRC?
So... - Palau got birth from Taiwan mama who take cares of their health which doesn't live together anymore, but they visit her from time to time. - Palau made friend with Philippine while living with landlord Spain. - Currently lives with other Micronesian brothers, but Palau had step parents of Japan & US, which they had a fight long ago and still arguing about Palau's custody, even though Palau is a grown up now who can live independently.
Pacific islands are not even mentioned or given enough attention besides the state of Hawaii. I’ve been very fascinated with islands in the pacific and one day, I might visit some of the islands like Fiji or even Vanuatu 🇻🇺
Next 10 : Panamá Papua Niugini (Papua New Guinea) Paraguay Perú Pilipinas (Philippines) Polska (Poland) Portuguesa (Portugal) قطر (Qatar) România Росси́я (Russia) 62 countries left
Compact Free Association goes both ways. Palauians don't need a visa to enter the US and Americans don't need a visa to enter Palau. So they can't actually limit the number of US visitors. Sweet. Get in line Japan.
2:38 Basically after WWII America had taken over all the islands in the Micronesia over from Japan. So we put all the new islands we took into a single US Territory called the Trust Territory of Pacific Islands that lasted from 1947-1994 which included Palau, The Federated State of Micronesia, The Marshall Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands. Eventually three of those Islands chains wanted independents but the US was like "But what about my military bases I built on you guys? I want those." And they were like "You can keep them in exchange can we also can we keep civil services from you guys? And be able to immigrate to America easily if we wanted?" And then Bill Clinton and Congress in 1994 were like "Yea sure that seems fair." Except the Northern Mariana were like "Nah fam I'm gunna stay as my own US Territory." And then they were also like "Hey Guam we're in the same island chain, want to just become one happy united territory together?" And Guam said "No" three separate times after three referendums where the people of the Northern Mariana Islands voted to join Guam but Guam's people voted no And that's where we are today!
@Matthew Tenorio_3200654 they knew ilocano though im not sure if its palau or guam but one of those islands incorporate filipino languages due to small diaspora of us.
I am a Palauan by blood and lived there my entire life. I am fluent in the Palauan language of my ancestors. I can assure you that the Palauan language has no Filipino influence. We are a Pacific island people that are more closely related to the Austronesians who settled Papua New Guinea. Presently our closest genetic cousins are the Micronesians also of the Western Pacific Ocean. Good day to you and I hope this clears up alot of the confusion created by this video. Elikeang.
My parents left Palau in the 80s. but they started dating after they met in Cali. Growing up almost nobody I knew, had ever heard of Palau until it was the locations for a season of Survivor.
we are linguistically and genetically related to each other. in fact, palau and other pacific islanders are descendants of taiwanese aborigines and early filipinos in luzon. hence the similarities.
@@SherwinCeleste-cj7ng of course that does not apply to everyone. A lot of older people hates the Japanese for their monstrosity during WWII (ie., Throwing babies and stabbing them with Bayonets midair etc), still you can't deny that the younger generation adores them since Japanese anime, appliances and other stuff are what they grew up with.
Palau was never invaded by the Japanese, when Germany lost ww1 the allies forced them to make repremends. Japan was part of the alliance and was given German territories in south east asia and the Pacific, it was a peaceful transition.
@@jrechebei Before the end of the war, Japan did take control of the island by placing their military there. After the war and peace conferrence the island became Japanese.
@Shown Morris Exactly how am I misguiding the public? The video stated that Japan took over Palau during WW2. That is factually not correct. The Japanese Navy seized the islands during 1914 and later during WW1 the islands were annexed by the Japanese Empire. After the war Japan received a mandate to administrate the islands as part of the South Pacific Mandate, in a similar way South Africa had the mandate to Administrate South West Africa (now Namibia). (SOURCE: Wikipedia) This is basically what I said above only with more detail. If you still disagree with what I posted, I suggest you state which parts you find an issue with and give a source rather than attacking people in the RU-vid Comments section for trying to correct a date. Just because you are local does not you know everything about your own country. And I am willing to accept if I am wrong, but I have no idea what you are on about and you just decide to lay into me for what? Trying to state a correction regarding during which war Japan took over control? Maybe try adding substance and context to your post rather just being insulted. Why not use this oppertunity to educate someone not from your country on your history rather than just attacking them.
Palau was a part of the Spanish colony of La Islas Filipinas. And Palau and Philippines are very close in some culture. History molded it. Even the language may even sound same.
@@ninjasiren Philippines and Palau are gentetically, linguistically related. but not just palau, all pacific islanders, island southeast asians, madagascar and taiwanese natives are all our relatives. our languages, culture and genes proves it all
One of my besties Abraham was from Palau. We threw him the biggest birthday party (2008) at my house. One day not long after his party he went to Roosevelt lake with a few mutual friends and some how he drowned. None of my so called friends can explain to me what happened. He died the same way his mom did ironically. RIP Abe.
Little mistake or slip of tongue maybe in the history section: Japanese Empire invaded in World War ONE fighting against the German Empire. The League of Nations later gave Japan the mandate fo
I had found my dream place... Never heard much about Palau but of all the countries until now It is my favorite. I hope one day to be able to visit it... just plane love it.
They have 17% of Filipino Ethnicity. They are part of the Philippines during the First Philippine Republic. They Have Tinola, Ukoy, and Halo-Halo which are foods of the Filipinos. Wow! I didn't know that! Thanks, Geography Now!
Palau, like the Philippines, was part of the Spanish East Indies, administered by the Captain-General in Manila. The Captain-General, on the other hand, was a subordinate of the Viceroy of New Spain (Mexico), which is a title similar to a duke, directly under the Spanish Crown.
@Matthew Tenorio_3200654 they have a representative during malolos congress in the first philippine republic. But it was not recognised by spain so by treaty, Germany take it from spain
Funny. We was never part of the Philippines. Respect to Philippines tho, but Philippines at that time probably just decided to claim Palau (much like the western colonizers) but Palauans never knew that Palau was ever under the Philippines. It’s not in our history.
my dad is living in palau ,but ever since i was born in this world , i didn't saw and met him personally . i wish one day we can meet in personal ,and that would be my one of the biggest happy memories in my life 😅
Is it weird that every time a new episode comes, I want to visit that country immediately? It even happened with Iraq... Well, finally a new episode, I was stuck watching all the previous ones... BTW, I can't wait for the Panama episode to come out, our southern neighbors. Greetings from Costa Rica. I probably could've given some information but well, it's too late now
It's different indeed! I'd love to see one of these videos about Puerto Rico Besides, the story of how we came to be a territory of the USA is pretty interesting
He did skip Guam....so now I'm worried he will skip Puerto Rico. Maybe someone at the Stae Department told him not to...lol. But he did Marshall Islands....so not sure why Guam was skipped.
