Just skip to 10:15. You're welcome. This time I fly "Solo"-mon. Actually not. WE GOT A SOLO to Join us! Meet TERRY! (Thanks to geograpeep Josue for getting me in contact with him too) Huge props to him for being in this episode, he was a little anxious because he had no camera experience and English is his 3rd language (after Isatabu and Pijin) but I was NOT going to let a unicorn walk away. You rock Terry! ALSO, we only BRIEFLY mentioned the history, and didn't have enough time in this episode for Famous people, So I'll add it in Fan Friday.
Hi Paul and GeoNow Team.I am Melanesian from West Papua Province of Indonesia.I am so glad that you mention us Papua and West Papua Province of Indonesia as a melanesian in this episode cuz we didn't get the recognition as we should. We always categorized as a South East Asian by culture, meanwhile we have nothing in common with any other South East Asian Nation.
@Ryne 4S if we wanna talk abt Papua Politic and the connection with Indonesia, topic abt papua politic itself arise in 2000's after long years of failed integration. And if you care enough to read abt papua's politic then you'll find that politic culture in Papua and other region in Indonesia is as diferrent water and fire. The history of Colonialism and integration in 1963 shape the way Papua's politic occur in this modern time.
@Ryne 4S you seem to be like break other countries. i am sure as an indian too that papua can't sustain without indonesia because unity only can make you rich and if we talk about recognisation, kazakhstan, uzbekistan, turkmenistan andother pacific islands till now many people don't know. so i don't think anyone can get recognisation by independence because everyone will forget you after some years if you don't develop like singapore.
Blame the Dutch The Netherlands treated their East Indies colony as a unitary state ruled from Java so it's not surprising that the independent rulers insisted on the same model I think the British or French would have done it differently
@@demonetized7803 Voldemort??? He is from Slytherin and he has a pet snake.... and... people thought he was dead.... but... no... because he had horcruxes... ooooooo
To me it's not studying x) it's purely entertainment. If studies were that easy it'd be boring and in the end we wouldn't have learnt much Edit : I forgot to say that I'm a geography/remote sensing Master student, so my viewpoint on this channel is a bit specific
I agree with Chris Much haven't been said in detailed and i kinda still wanted to hear more randon facts and the history of my country that weren't mentioned above😅
Guadalcanal's discovery by westerners was under the Spanish expedition of Álvaro de Mendaña in 1568. The name comes from the village of Guadalcanal, in the province of Seville, in Andalusia, Spain, birthplace of Pedro de Ortega Valencia, a member of Mendaña's expedition.
"Bloody Ridge"? I can only imagine that when the british came along to colonise the islands, one of them found this spot and said "That's a big bloody ridge!" and that name just stuck lmao
I was very surprised a few years ago when I found out that the Solomond Islands are bigger than my country Macedonia, considering they are in Oceania. I hope you qualify for the FIFA World Cup one day Solomons, because you are getting very close! 🇲🇰❤🇸🇧
I have two uncles fought in the battle of Guadalcanal , one was one my fathers three older brother who served and the other was one of my mothers three older brothers who fought in WW2 as well ,he received the first of his two purple hearts at Guadalcanal .
Same, I heard of that battle, but never knew it was the Solomon Islands. That was truly an epic naval battle. The last major naval battle to be fought in close range using old school naval guns. There must be a lot of unexploded shells and bombs littering the sea floor posing a hazard to scuba divers.
It is bro as an Aussie i've been to many islands most have a bit of western influences but if you want to live the simple life it's so easy to go off the grid. They really community based and poverty really doesn't exist cause you can basically live off the land and sea with very little need for money.
@@GL-ys8je As an Islander that is 100% fact about us even though some of our low-class people find it difficult to get money but we are totally rich on land and sea resources for survival.
One of the amazing things here in the solomon was that in rural life, you feel like you are in paradise. Almost everything is free. People were very friendly with strangers and were more welcoming. As compared with the Western world today. It is very frustrating if you don't have money. What a life.

When Keith said, "Buy my shirt, not Hannah's", it was the first time he showed any dislike of her in these videos. I always felt the Hannah-Keith "rivalry" was one-sided; Hannah would call Keith disgusting, then Keith would show up, burping or hog-calling.
In the Fan Friday episodes Keith has responded to the rivalry a couple of times. I think the rivalry started because Keith likes the Gators and Hannah likes the Crimson Tide.
Seeing alot of positive comments about my home country Solomon Islands 🇸🇧 here really melts my heart🥺 like yes we are far from modernization but we're thankful for our beloved beautiful country 💙😍white Sandy beaches with natural air to breathe ❤️yeah that's right a tropical gateway 😌🌬️🌴 the colours from our national flag also hold deep meanings 🇸🇧Blue: The Blue Seas💙 Yellow: The white sandy beaches that always reflects the forever summer sun💛Green: Our forever green Tropical rainforests rich in flora and fauna💚 the Five Stars: The five main islands🥰. Solomon Islands is amazing. When the Covid-19 is over please come see Solomon. So Solomon So Different 🇸🇧🤍
A country that I wish to someday visit! Underrated indeed, I got to meet the niece of Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare since am with same church as hers along with her friends and family. Solomon’s Islanders are such beautiful, wonderful people and wish to return favor and visit them.
A Melanesian here and a half asian! it's been like 5 years since I'm away from my home country and I missed it so much two more years and I can finally visit again can't wait.
My great great uncle, Robert Adams Downing was shipwreck in the Solomon Islands during World War II. His ship was called the USS Helena, and it was torpedoed three times by the Japanese. He was helped out by friendly natives and was sent home a year later in 1945. Thank you to the Solomon Islander people for saving and taking care of him. Love from the United States.🇺🇸🇸🇧
Video gives me so many memories of Fiji, Micronesia, Marshall, and Papua New Guinea! Melanesia extremely under-appreciated region of the world! Vanuatu episode is going to be awesome.
These are always so relaxing to watch. Considering I’m a huge geography/history fan, I love these! Also Terry is a super chill guy, I hope we see him in other videos!
Solomon Islanders, if you read this, thank you for being the ones who saved our 35th president. Without you the history of the whole world would be different. Your Biuku Gaza and Eroni Kumana initiated the rescue. A small nation, your step into history nevertheless changed history. So the geography we all share bids us to ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for the world.
Let me share a story of mine from Solomon Islands. I was traveling from Honiara to Auki by ferry. It was one of the smaller & faster catamaran boats. Anyway, about 20 minutes into the journey I saw a fish jump up from the water and fly just as fast as the boat. It flew around 30cm above the water for over 30 to 60 meters at a 45 degree angle away from the boat. I was by myself and had never seen something like that in my life. I even had doubts if it was real. I thought I was hallucinating due to the heat. In fact, I was so shy, I stopped myself from asking any of the locals on the boat if they had seen one before. I was worried that they would think I was crazy. It didn't take long however to see more and more of these flying fish and I was confident that I wasn't the only one who could see them.
the snake and mountain story reminds me of The Hobbit. The men inside the mountain are the dwarves, the snake and the gold in the mountain is the dragon Smaug occupying the former dwarven mountain-city of Erebor with all his riches of gold and gems. And the diamond on his head is the Arkenstone.
Not bad! From a (Malaitan) Solomon Islander in Tokyo: well done on getting a wantok to co-present :). Gud wan Terry bro! BTW...I love those little tapa maps for gifts: I've given away heaps to international friends lol.
I would love to know what Solomon Islanders think of the book/films, The Thin Red Line. I watched the 1998 film in theaters as a teenager and it introduced me to the Melanesian culture. I know that the geography isn't accurate in the book but the author Jim Jones did serve on the island during World War II. Very curious to hear how the past is taught today. Great episode everyone. I have been to Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Fiji but really want to see the Solomons.
I have a friend from the Solomon Islands in Law School. We started a study group together. I love this video, it's helped me to learn more about where she's from. My own family is partly Native Hawaiian (I'm mixed race) but there is some difference between Polynesian and Melanesian cultures and I love that educational videos like this exist!
To be fair the show has evolved a lot during that time adding different new sections and such so it's only natural that later episodes are longer Also why not have a longer episode about a lesser known country, I think it's more interesting
Hi Paul ! Thank you so much for this cool and instructive episode ! It’s cool that you brought Terry, a guy from the Solomon Islands. It’s a shame that this part of the world isn’t talked about more in western media, so once again, thank you. You said that the Solomon Islands were part of the South Pacific Commission, but it is now called the Pacific Community (SPC or CPS in French). I’m really looking forward for the Vanuatu episode. Good job 👍🏽
You missed a great and popular Solomon Islan song by OneTox, Ramukanji (English version)! Catchy pacific reggae style. A shout to all SV Delos channel tribe.
I know you won't see this but it's great to see you's back after the break. Hope everything and everyone is doing well. I still can't believe there are like minded people like me who love geography. I was always bullied for it. Paul is inspiring. I hope the channel doesn't end when the countries do. Sending my love
Me, who is war history enthusiast, when names of islands and area are mentioned in video "gets flashbacks" Seriously... almost every single corners of Solomon Islands both sea and land were battleground...
In Finland, the earth-oven is mostly known as the traditional cooking method for ”Rosvonpaisti” (”Robber’s Roast”), which takes about 8-12 hours to prepare overall, depending on the size of the roast 😋🇫🇮.
Funny, that ”Guadalcanal” looks and sounds like a very Nāhuatl place name, almost like something you’d expect to see in Mexico, in the former Aztec territories 🤔🇸🇧🇲🇽.
great job! It was great to have Terry co-host with you! I've been long-time watcher - I collect cookbooks and try to get one from each country you do but I have to say i've had no luck so far finding one for Solomon Islands. But I won't give up! Cheers, 2sc
