We are now in the End game. Our last set of "Triplets" the UNITED COUNTRIES. Starting with the UAE!! They're United. They're Arab. And They're Emirates. You've probably heard of this place but what do you REALLLY know about it outside of Dubai? ENJOY!!!
Brownie points for saying that UAE is not only about Abu Dhabi and Dubai. There are lots of hidden gems in other Emirates. Sharjah is the cultural capital of UAE. If you want anything authentic Emirati, Sharjah is the place to visit. Excellent beaches - RAK and Fujairah. Ajman for excellent nightlife. Umm Al Quwain, if you are feeling adventurous! Also, all visas are now two years, instead of three. In addition, a resident can now sponsor his/her male child for up to 25 years and not 18 years as it was the case previously. A male or female resident can sponsor his/her son/s until he is 25. Sons of determination (those with special needs) can be sponsored with no restrictions with regard to his/ their age/s. For babies born in the UAE, a residence visa must be applied for, within 120 days of its birth to avoid getting fines.
As an Emirati, the part about the crazy roads and exits is totally true! Driving in dubai is very hard, but you’ll get used to it after a few weeks/months.
I hate driving in Dubai. "It says go right. Right here? Is this my exit? Okay... damn!" And yes, it takes another ten minutes to get to a point to turn around .
8 years... it's been 8 years of me watching GN, starting with Afghanistan itself. It's incredibly somber getting so close to the end. While watching this series I've moved to a new city, begun, and finished college, worked 4 different jobs, moved 4 times, traveled to 15 different countries, met the love of my life and carried on the longest relationship of my life at 4 years and ongoing, got a cat, rubbed that cat's belly approximately 10 billion times and counting, become a new person, eaten approximately10 gajillion bowls of ramen, etc.. I'll be a fan of this channel till the very end, but this series has been a constant during probably the most monumental years of my life thus far. Thank you Barbs and the rest of the GN family for the 8 years of dedicated hard work and consistent quality. We'll see you at the finish line.
Frankly, Paul may well go back and revisit some of the earlier countries - since a) he's a lot better and more thorough now; b) massive changes in some cases - see Afghanistan 😢
Just want to say, Paul, I appreciate your efforts. You are the one of the only unbiased, neutral geography youtubers out there, and you always work very hard on your videos. Way to go!
This is very true. I am Arab. The country I come from doesn't matter; as almost every Arab country has a sh!t reputation in the media. Barbs' video popped into my recommendation, and I decided to watch. I expected the classic "talking with hidden, yet obvious resentment" that people hold against my country, and for the most part, I get it. However, most often than not their resentment leads the topic, and it ends up being a fest of misinformation. I was surprised watching his video, because he talked from such a neutral point of view, and he did not spread any misinformation. He was respectful, well researched, and it was a pleasant video to watch. He did not sugar coat anything, he just... narrated it as it is. We need more people like him in the world! let alone, in geography videos :) He is a great dude.
I wish you could have talked a bit more about the Emirati demographics in particular as Emirati's are not a monolith as there are not only Bedouin Emiratis but Emiratis who have Yemeni, Balochi, Omani and background from different areas of Iran as well. Something I did not know about UAQ is that it's a place for hiking (anyone who's gone hiking in UAQ let me know!) I'd like to point that as Sharjah is practically capital of culture in the UAE, they are known for so many events to do with the Arts like the Sharjah Biennial and the annual Sharjah Light Festival as well as the Sharjah Bookfair.
Im a year late 😅 But UAQ dosent have any mountains but its famous for its beaches and especially mangrove UAQ You can go kayaking and there is a coffee shop and airbnbs Its really beautiful! If you would like going hiking you can go to ras Al khaima or fujairah there is alot of hiking trails there 👍
@@s3_woody Yeah so there is I think one or two trails in UAQ (you don’t need mountains for a hiking trail) but Barbs could have saved that for Ras Al Khaimah/ Fujairah: Sharjah because I wouldn’t put that tag on UAQ.) Spot on with your knowledge on the area.
As an Emirati, I would like to thank you for the most unbiased video about UAE I have ever seen. Also, it is very accurate and your description of the emirates was spot on. Thank you and I hope you had a great time in my country!
Maybe considering how long this has been and info as well as style has gone outdated, maybe they're gonna loop around on the older ones, idk, but eyes open.
I used to live in the UAE thank you for this and yes, DUBAI IS NOT A COUNTRY finally someone real addressing the situation. I hope you have a good time making these last couple of videos we love you Paul
Small correction, we use G plug outlet not D. Would have loved to contribute to the episode. I remember I sent an email a while ago but it may have been lost in all the others. Thanks for the episode
I am glad you talked about the Sheikh-Emir-King thing, which always confused me. here is some Arabic Language and history lesson Emir = Prince therefore; Emirate = Principality, a land ruled by a prince, similar system exists in europe. (Sheikh) could mean one of two things in classical Arabic: 1- Elder, senior citizen, a man who is old, not a woman tho. 2- a Priest for Muslims. in early Arab history, the head/chief of each tribe would be called a king, but when Islam became the dominant religion it denied people from that title, as even the leader of the whole empire would call himself (Successor of the prophet) and derive his authority from religion, so the tribes did something similar to their titles and gave their leaders a religious title that is less than that of the ruler of the empire, so they landed on Sheikh/priest, even if the leader was not really suitable to be called a priest, it was just a formality.... then in modern history (1900's) the leaders of neighbouring countries picked other titles: 1- Emir/Price for Qatar. 2- Malek/King for Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Bahrain, and the previous monarch of Iraq. 3- Sultan/Emperor for Oman, similar to the title of the leader of Ottoman empire/Sultanate. 4- technically the leader of Syria is a king, since he inherited the power from his father (the previous ruler of the country) and they both would rule for life, but his official title is president/Ra'ees.
You can definitely see Barb's evolution throughout the years of the channel. We really appreciate your efforts and congratulations on all of your achievements!
I must admit that I kind of feel a little bad for the people in the other Emirates who are always overshadowed by Dubai. Thanks for giving a spotlight to the entire country!
Abu Dhabi is the biggest Emirate though, and the capital city Really the entire UAE is defined by the rivalry/partnership between Dubai and Abu Dhabi Similar to how the late Holy Roman Empire was defined by the rivalry between Prussia and Austria
As an Emirati, it really makes me feel happy that we are not only being known for Dubai, and that we are actually represented as the entire country, Thank you Barbs! Edit: Yo I feel I’m famous answering everyone’s questions lmao 😭
i'm a UAE citizen from ras al khaimah. RAK is like the oldest, most chill, cultural brother of all the emirates xD UAE citizens from the other emirates often come back to RAK during weekends and holidays because so many of their families from all the tribes live here in quiet and peace. RAK is a beautifully kept secret of the UAE that has its own charm :3
@@mpendakiswahili3053 no not different languages, maybe some tiny differences in dialects, but nothing more. There are a couple of exceptions though. Al Bloushi tribe have their own language (bloushi) but it is very sparsely spoken these days and quite rare to hear. The individuals who speak it are the members of tribe who live away from cities, on the more mountainous/desert areas. So to answer your question, the tribes are basically huge groups of families that make up the local population of the UAE. Some tribes are more common in certain cities/emirates than others, and some tribes even have a strong influence in the government (al nahayan, al maktoum, al nuaimi, etc…) but at the end of the day we are all emiratis and we don’t view one tribe being more superior than the other at all.
Before you run out of countries you should do a filler week on Antarctica. The show is called “Geography Now” and it be cool to cover all 7 continents :)
To be completely honest, we cannot thank Barbs enough for making geography such an enjoyable subject for us. Their passion and enthusiasm for the subject were infectious, and it made us look forward to every class. They went above and beyond to create engaging lesson plans and incorporate real-world examples to help us understand and appreciate the importance of geography in our daily lives. we feel fortunate to have had such an amazing teacher like Barbs, and we will always remember the positive impact they had on our education and love for geography.
You forgot to mention that Sharjah is the only emirate that has 4 days work a week instead of 5 (monday to thursday) and the past two years statistics showed that employees are more active and accomplishing with the new week day system. but great episode, never realised that i'm a minority in MY OWN country haha.
Oh boy these next two episodes will be something else I will say, but I’m really excited for both of them! Especially the USA! Also Barbs I was not expecting this episode to be out pretty quickly. It usually takes you a good month to release a new episode but I don’t mind these quick uploads! Love to the UAE from the USA! 🇦🇪❤️🇺🇸
I'm a geology student who has taken courses in musicology, chemistry, hydrogeology, polluted ground science, German and Spanish. I will now try to study geography and biology at the university. I have always been interested in the geosciences and I think Barbs is doing a great job making his living on RU-vid. His videos are both entertaining and educational. I look forward to studying geography, although I think it will be very different from watching RU-vid videos. :)
Can’t wait for the uk episode as it is my home country! As so, I would like to give some little facts: London it’s self, has 170 museums. Standing at 1,107 feet, the shard is the tallest building in Europe. The London Underground is the oldest underground train system in the world. The British navy used Britney spears’ songs to scare off Somali pirates off the coast of Africa. In Britain accents noticeably change every 25 miles (40km). All horses donkeys and ponies must have a horse passport. In England it is illegal to die in the Houses of Parliament. In 1811, nearly a quarter of all women where named Mary in Britain. And last but not least, the National animal of Scotland is the unicorn.
barb is an amazing creator. He needs to be immortalized in history for this. I was with him since my freshman year of high school. Now I’m about to graduate college in 3 months. Man deserves the world.
Quite an interesting episode. I've always thought thatthe UAE has always been a bit of a quirky Country, especially with how each of the Emirates are autonomous to an extent. Also, I gotta admit, there is one thing I am desperately hoping for in the next episode.. For Barbs to nail the pronunciation of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, Ynys Môn, Gogledd Cymru (Yes, including the latter 2 parts. Goodluck Barbs, if you see this! Also please visit Wales too! We'll welcome you with open arms!)
i know it’ll still take a little while before the alphabet is over, but are you planning on making videos about places that aren’t independent, such as greenland, french polynesia and stuff like that when the alphabet UN countries are done? it’d be cool to learn specifically about those places
I spent about 2 months in Dubai back in 1998 and it was quite the experience. My dad met one of the Sheikhs there. The heat was brutal, it was mostly desert at the time. But I remember having an amazing time over there despite the 8 hr jetlag.
I’ve been following you since letter C … got so excited when you were coming closer to my country (Peru) and when you finally made it I felt (as we say here) as happy as a dog with two tails. Thanks a lot barbs! Every time the videos got longer you still managed to make it interesting, and here I am excited for a 34 minutes of geography about a far away country…. I think you’ve done your job more than well
FINALLLYYYYYY MYYY COUNTTRRRYYYY been watching your content since the Bahrain or China episode. Emailed you a couple of years ago for UAE's episode I feel like a proud dad rn
As an Emirati (from the Emirate of Sharjah), I would say you did a really good job talking about my country. For anyone reading this, feel free to ask me anything regarding UAE and I will do my best to answer. Cheers!
So unfortunately in the video there was only one Emirati. She had colored hair and piercings - how common is that in UAE? Would she be considered "alternative" there? I've only been to Abu Dhabi airport, so I know next to nothing about the country. I've spoken with some Bahrainis and Saudis recently and they told me their countries have become much more open concerning youth culture and mixing of genders in public in recent years.
@@mobo7420 That is not common within Emiratis, and I would have loved it if the person in the video looked more like how the majority of Emiratis look like. I won’t deny that. Nevertheless, she was the only one they could find and willing take part of the video. Also she provided a good summary of Emirati music. I enjoyed her segment. Kudos to her. What do you mean by “alternative” though?
This episode was great. The UAE is way more fascinating than I would’ve thought. I can’t wait for the UK episode. Not only cause I live their, but also cause Jay Forman will be on the episode and I looking forward to seeing him.

The list of all the remaining episodes : United Kingdom United States Uruguay Uzbekistan Vanuatu (Vatican City)? Venezuela Yemen Zambia Zimbabwe (Faroe Island)?
10 episodes left! I seriously cannot believe it. Been watching since 2015, it's amazing to see the end of this incredible series! Props to you, Barbs! List of countries left for those interested: United Kingdom United Statte Uruguay Uzbekistan Vatican City* Vanuatu Venezuela Vietnam Yemen Zambia Zimbabwe
@@kingdomoftransylvania5744 Technically Vatican is a country but also a UN observer state so he won’t do it yet until he’s finished with all the countries that are officially part of the UN.
@@damirimamagic5064 well i guess he can make update videos about his first episode countries or maybe bring people from those countries for his update videos
Great video! I was one of the 88.5% expats, lived in Dubai since I was 4 (when it looked pretty much like the first image 1:09 - actually lived in the building in the photo for a few months). Despite some of the controversies/stereotypes the western media have plastered the country, the UAE has made significant steps to diversify and 'modernise' the country, finding a balance between cultural traditional laws and more open to the modern-day expectations.
It was a really good video and pretty enjoyable I've got to give you that, I've also been watching you since you made the Austria episode. But I feel like you over pronounced a lot of the names and some places like "Khor Fakkan" you pronounced at "Khor Kattan". Here are some corrections I could point out from the video. Omar Al Borkan is not Emirati but Iraqi. Redfest has not been a thing since 2020. Two artists are shown twice on the list of Emirati artists, Hamdan Al Abri & Abri are the same artist (Abri is not even a band just a rebrand of the artist), same goes to Eidah Al Menhali and Eidah (same artist). Rashed Al Majed is not an Emirati artist but Saudi Arabian. ( You could've put Fayez Al Saeed instead).
Just came back from a trip to the Emirates, so I must make a minor (but imporatnat) correction - the plug type is G. I had to buy adapter in 1 AM, but was lucky enough to find one in the nearby market in downtown Abu Dhabi for like 4.5 AED (US$1:)
Love from the UK to the United Arab Emirates. And I'm excited to see the UK episode cause we're an odd bunch, it'll be intresting see our culture spoken about. Hope you mention doggerland cause that's important in our history.
Cool that you mentioned the worlds Largest indoor theme park But the UAE also have the worlds fastest roller coaster. You have to wear goggles to ride it. I’m a theme park buff so I’m 100% expecting some of the US and UKs theme parks (Magic mountain, Cedar point, Alton towers) to get mentions.
For the UK when discussing England you need to realise its more than just London, London is a thing of its own nowadays., very different from rest of England or the UK
I´m venezuelan and I came across this channel many years ago, I think around the letter D or so, and I cannot wait to see the video of my own country, it has been so long since I started to see these videos and it always seems to far to get to the letter V, you guys started with the letter U recently and I got so excited, "this should be a quick letter and then the V" I thought, and then I remembered that in English there are the United countries and sh*t! these are really big and I realized that I need to wait a little bit longer lol. But Im really glad that you guys made me wait for a youtube video that long and still keep me interested. You are doing great, keep going, please.
Wow what a coincidence and I'm here in Dubai right now and this was a great timing to watch this. This might help me for my trip here. Thank you Sir Barbs ❤
Just like everyone is saying, you, the team and this channel has done the world a great service. We SOOO appreciate all the hard work and thank you SOOO much for making this legendary series. 🎉🎉😊❤
Bangladeshi and Pakistani rule UAE, we have some Indians but hopefully government realises soon that we don't need Hindus and Christians and deport them so that completely inhabitants are Muslims. Love from Pakistan
Thank you so much Barbs for covering my resident country, The UAE (I was born in, and citizen of India). Also, you mentioned about freedom of speech or PDA, trust me they are only paper rules, everyone is chilled with it unless you intentionally try to violate something in a wrong way. Me and my girlfriend live together here in Dubai and we hold hands in public, even kiss (not for too long though lol) and nobody bothers. The rules on paper and the rules in practice are completely different, the one thing that all of us the expats have in common is we love our beloved Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, he is such a charismatic visionary. ❤ Always grateful to UAE for giving me everything that I have, all the love and respect to it. 🇮🇳❤️🇦🇪
Hey, I loved this series when I was younger. I was wondering if you could do some updated versions of the older episodes (like Australia or Austria) so that we can see how you would do these videos now.
I remember seeing that Bahrain episode some number of years ago, been waiting for the uae episode ever since then. It kinda feels surreal that we’ve reached here, it all seemed so far away yet here we are. Time really flies
Not an end game! You've got to redo all the first videos, Afghanistan, Argentina, Brazil, Belgium and so many in the top of alphabet deserves the quality you provided for the latter ones!
I love the UAE! They got me interested into the arabic language in the first place, maybe some day i‘ll even try to learn it. And btw your flag is amazing. To me def. in the top 5 of the most beautiful flags on the planet. Its sad that there are so many things wrong happening in this country. Never the less i am hoping for a bright future for all of you guys, no matter if native arab or migrant worker!
You guys just nailed it. I'm going to stay in Dubai for next two months and I have been looking over the internet to know more about the country. This is the most wholesome video about UAE. KUDOS !
IDK how he does it, but Barbs just comes off really naturally compared to the others who you can tell are just reading a script. Overall a really good video!
I can’t believe we’re on our top 10 LAST VIDEOS! United Kingdom, United States, Uruguay, Yemen, Vatican City, Vanuatu, Venezuela, Vietnam, Uzbekistan, Zambia and the final one Zimbabwe! He will probably start doing the unrecognized countries after, I would like to see him do transnistria in Moldova.
