Yo, I am Caden Howlett, a second-year PhD student studying geoscience at the University of Arizona. In this video, I describe my most recent peer-reviewed publication and, more generally, how field-based geologic research is conducted as a graduate student. Hopefully it will provide some tips on how to succeed as a PhD student.

Great talk! Having done zircon Geochronology and zircon and rutile Thermochronology (along with major fluid inclusion work but anyhow..), these are quite challenging techniques to first comprehend, analyze and interpret. I was not able to finish this work during my Master's and had to expend it to a PhD work (along with additional projects). So you doing both during your Master's is quite impressive - if publishing in Tectonics is not enough. Good luck man!

wow nice! rutile is an interesting mineral that I've never worked with. I think some people are currently trying to figure out rutile fission track thermochron...I don't know how it is going lol. Thanks for the comment.

@@cadenhowlett As you said, rutile is still challenging to date as a U-Th/He and fission track clock, mainly due to strong alpha ejection-anisotropy (C-axis prominent) along with radiation damage-induced alpha retention. The latter is amplified the older the rutile.. mine were 600 Ma and I was able to date them (U-Pb also yielded 600 Ma), but only 10 out of 100 or so were even workable. Even harder to grasp is that experiments show higher closure temperatures in zircon than rutile, while some natural samples (mine as well) show higher closure temperatures in rutile. A tough nut to crack was this one! Good luck man!

Hi Caden, my undergrad BS in Geosciences offers two routes, a geology route and a geophysics route. Looking around for jobs, I'm noticing a lot more opportunities for students with a geophysics background. Do you have any insight on choosing one of the two routes? Thank you!

How long was the process of "ping pong" from review to resubmitting to publication?

I submitted the paper on July 12, 2020 and it was published online in August 2021. So about a year. It was a long one--it seems to me that the average time between submission and acceptance is about 6-8 months.

What are the possible ways to get an admission for the PhD to an international student

Most universities in the United States have resources to help international students at the undergrad and graduate level. For example, see the main page for the institution I'm currently working at: international.arizona.edu/iss Hopefully these kinds of resources offered by the universities of interest will be helpful to provide some info.

Words of wisdom. Everything you say is correct but when saying. Umm as a filler word will target you for conflict on augmentation. I know you know what you are talking about but the phrase umm can be distracted towards the goal. I know it sounds goofy I'm not being an ass or mean but it will distract from the timbre of your message love the content thrive
