Defensive highlights of the former top Middleweight contender.
George Benton - Was a boxer and famous boxing trainer from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Benton became the #1 ranked middleweight in the world in the early 1960s, but he never got a shot at the world title. In 1962, after he beat Giardello, Benton thought that he would get a title shot. However, Giardello's manager, Lou Duva, was well connected and was able to get Giardello a fight with Dick Tiger for the World Middleweight Championship, which Giardello won by decision. "Yeah, I screwed George out of his shot," Duva said. "He didn't even know about it till I told him many years later."

hanzagod is truly preserving the old school boxers. I would have thought this style was mainly used by Ezzard Charles, James Toney and the Mayweathers. Same goes for high guard. The same goes for D' Amato/Lomachnko shift, until I saw his videos on Orlando Canizales.

Beautiful shoulder roll. The only thing he was lacking was being offensive with it and coming back with counters after the deflection. Other than that he may be one of the best to ever use the shoulder roll. The technique is flawless and he has definetely mastered the defensive side of the shoulder roll. I still rank James toney and Floyd Mayweather's shoulder roll more effective than his because of the fact that they made their opponents miss and then pay! Not just miss.

@Garrett1240
@Garrett1240 8 лет назад
You're blind. Floyd's shoulder roll was nothing like Benton's. Benton hardly ever leaned back and kept his arms up high like Floyd. Though they're both shoulder rolls, each guy did it differently. If you wanna compare shoulder rolls then James Toney arguably had the most similar defense to Benton. What separated Benton and Toney's shoulder roll from Floyd's is that every move they made was designed in order to counter right back. To them it was a waste to evade a punch without intending to counter. Floyd wasn't like this at all, he evades punches and doesn't fire back a lot of the time. Benton and Toney were true counter punchers, while Floyd was a low-risk point fighter.

I've tried repeatedly doing the shoulder roll in sparring sessions the way George Benton does it but I can only do it the way Mayweather does it, by leaning back and raising the shoulder in a twisting motion to the right . I just don't understand how George Benton does It. it's easy to do it by leaning back, I've blocked a lot of punches using that defense. but I want to do it the way George Benton does it.
@largelester
@largelester 8 лет назад
Mr Benton fluidly combined slipping, sliding, bobbing, weaving and rolling into his style. Try switching to southpaw a few times during sparring to practice rolling jabs and hooks to improve balance and upper body flexibility.
@Garrett1240
@Garrett1240 8 лет назад
I agree. James Toney's shoulder roll was very similar to Benton's. Toney rarely leaned back when he rolled his shoulder unlike Floyd, instead he would change elevation, and move duck forward inside his opponent's reach, also like Benton. Locche was another guy who was much more similar to Benton and Toney than to Mayweather.
@cardiomanify
@cardiomanify 7 лет назад
John AJ But I find leaning back is much safer. Also, it tends to cause your opponents to overcommit. James Toney tends to mix it up by ducking and weaving. Floyd tends to use footwork to get out of range, or go all the way in to smother his opponent. Floyd uses head control in the pocket.
@largelester
@largelester 7 лет назад
Rocking back or not shoulder roll will protect your chin and jaw. Coaches and sparing partners don't always appreciate it
@cvill12345
@cvill12345 6 лет назад
Tuck your chin into your shoulder like you're kissing it than as the punch starts to launch hunch and twist like your throwing a hook don't overly twist quarter twist or even a quarter turn can help as well being as though the opponent is aim at the firing line your head is in making that quarter turn or twist will give him illusion that the target will be there but isn't perfect example of a trap/bait scenario through a lazy up jab and make him confident to throw a right hand than twist or quarter pivot out in a fast motion than launch your straight right hand or the right upper cut to the bread basket for me mike macculm is a perfect example of what I'm talking about product of George Benton

Although i admit George Benton was a great defensive fighter, but in no way he can compare to the greatest of them all, i.e. The defensive master and genius, Nicolino locche, who would absolutely ridicule his opponents, with his defensive skills, who eventually lost their fights against him by sheer exaustion for punching continousely at thin air, and not for being hit by him, who really lacked any punching power, and because of this fact, his wins are more miraculus than any other fighter who had any shred of power whatsoever. don't take my word for it; go and whatch his videos, you'll be amazed.
@hanzagod

The shoulder roll is great. Mayweather has basically taken a huge nasty shit on this style, but don't let that take away from it. An exciting fighter can use the shoulder roll.

How exactly did Mayweather take a shit on this style? Let's hear it

1 Theorelle He used it to never engage in fights and robbed fans of entertaining nights towards the end of his career.

+Buddy Boy12 besides his almost signature shoulder roll followed up with a shovel hook/ rear uppercut to catch people overextending

Boxing is probably the only sport where the pros today are worse than the ones from years back. Hockey players now are better, footballers are better, track athletes are better. Boxers omg

That's how it is with everything that is in decline. Look at the sorry state of traditional Chinese martial arts. In the 19th century, Chinese martial art flourished because of China's instability and people needing to hire body guards and caravan guards. Nowadays barely anyone who does Chinese martial arts can fight

Floyd's shoulder roll is very different from Benton's. James Toney, before he got fat, looked exactly like this guy in the ring. I mean their movements are almost mirror images of each other. Imo Toney had a better shoulder roll than Floyd, and he learned it all from Benton.

Most people think that Floyd invented philly shell but because poor intellect of boxing they didn't the George is the one that created philly she'll then it passed on to fighters later on

No Benton didn't invent the shoulder roll. Edward Haislet wrote a boxing manual in 1940 and it had the shoulder roll in it, so people must've been doing it even before then

LOOKS like Floyd Mayweather stoled the Shoulder Roll from George Benton.
