Brett is the best hitter I ever saw. He could hit the high pitch and the low pitch. Hit for power and average. I'm not even a Royals fan.

Boy, I certainly remember that upper deck, monster shot at Yankee Stadium that was a dagger through our hearts in the 1980 ALCS. Whew !

He wasn't a big home run hitter, but he hit some big home runs.
@dsfddsgh

Still had 317 home runs playing in a huge park where you didn't hit many home runs. If he played half his games at Yankee stadium he probably hits over 450 for his career. When he put his mind to it he could hit for power imagine if he played in a smaller park.

One of my fondest childhood memories was the Royals 85 WS. Living in Reds country we didn't see a lot of The Royals. My Dad was friends with Dick Howser, he played with Howser when they where teenagers. Different world before cell phones and email, people wrote letters back then and sent Christmas cards. I still remember getting Christmas cards from Dick Howser. Seeing my Dads excitement as The Royals won that series is still one of my favorite childhood memories. I remember Whitey Herzog and The Cardinals wanted nothing to George Brett, the stats may show he only drew 4 walks, but he was pitched around that entire series.

I remember that series. No one outside of Kansas City gave the Royals even a slight chance against the Cardinals. But the Royals were not, from a stat standpoint, nearly as inferior to the Cardinals that year. They had a huge edge in power, as Brett and Steve Balboni each hit 30+ HR and, I think, they were the only AL team to have two players with 30+ HR that year. And Royals Stadium leaned more towards being a pitcher's park. Their team ERA when adjusted for the AL having the DH was just as good as St. Louis. And their starting staff was excellent, as well as having Quisenberry as their reliever. I didn't expect Kansas City to win, but I thought it would take the Cardinals at least six games, if not seven, to do it. And the Royals ended up doing it. That was an exciting series. I remember watching each game as a kid (I was 15) with my dad when he was home from work.

was a royals fan during their great run in the late 70's and early 80's, the thing about brett's 3 homers off (hall of famer) catfish hunter was he almost had a 4th off (hall of famer) goose gossage, just missing it-caught on the warning track, the out followed by a cheer by yankee fans, a mixture of relief and acknowledgment of almost seeing history in the making.

You want to talk about a guy that puts the entire team on his back... Brett homers in game 5 of the 76 ALCS to tie the game and put the Royals in a position to win the series. Brett's 3-run homer clinches the 80 ALCS. Brett goes 4-for-4 in game 3 in the 85 ALCS. At this point in the game, the Jays were up 5-2 and close to taking a 3-0 lead in the series. His homer turns the series around and the Royals eventually win.

I dont care what anyone says or any example... BB was a roid head too, that shot off of Gossage in the ALCS, was the fastest I have ever seen a ball leave a ball park... I think Goose even said it was the loudest crack of a bat he ever heard.. I guarantee he needed neck surgery from that snap. And Goose was a great RP for sure and got GB out a lot.

I was a Met fan & hated the Yankees. My brother was the opposite. This was always true with people growing up in Brooklyn N.Y. I remember watching this game with him & my Mom. When Brett did this, I screamed in joy, jumped out of my seat & almost hit the 10 ft. ceiling. My brother who was 5 years older than me jumped me from behind & with vicious intent tried to kill me. All the while I was laughing my head off. Steinbrenner strikes again. He had an MVP winning pitcher Sparky Lyle. What does he do? What he always did. Gets rid of Lyle for the so called bigger stronger player. A football mentality. A true incompetent cancer of baseball.
