Remember, the longer that they stand and clap, the longer this 99 yr old man has to stand himself. This was a very warm and loving tribute by an audience, who -by and large -barely heard of vaudeville, had no memory of Gracie or his early TV show, and thought all radio was ever good for was playing rock or country hits and listening to PBS. What they know of this man was the occasional appearance on Johnny Carson , or Los Vegas circuit, Oh God and the Sunshine Boys movies.

My Brother and I had the pleasure of meeting George in 1994 when I was 12. A friend of our family took us up to his house while we were in Los Angeles to go to Disneyland. His housekeeper said to come back the next day at a certain time. Like clockwork, he pulled up in the town car and we took Polaroid photos with him in his garage. We mailed them to him along with some 8x10's, he signed them all and sent them back. I had no idea who he was at the time!

The room didn't feel as appreciative as one would expect...She was BROKE UP with gratitude and everybody else was acting like they were filming a scene.

What do you expect? He believed in her and gave her first big break to her in Las Vegas. She was very grateful AND they remained friends. Ann Margaret was, and still IS a classy lady. Take a good look kiddies because we're loosing more of them each year and soon, they will be just like the old south....a generation gone with the wind!

It is what Hollywood does so well--fake sincerity! To paraphrase Martin Short--"You are the most sincere phony person of all the Late Night Hosts!"

Most of those people would never have seen his vaudeville act, but many might have been old enough to have watched his television show from the 1950s. I'm 77 and I remember watching his show on morning daytime TV.

His smartest move was landing Gracie. Very nice people.

And, unfortunately, his dumbest move was cheating on her.

@@electrictroy2010 Yes she said that to Jack Benny's wife because when he cheated, he gave her a silver something or other she had wanted for the dining room in their house. It was in "Gracie A Love Story" which was one of Burns books.

If they planned it A little better his last words on television would not have been: i’m going to sit down now. (but he waited as long as he could) Legend.

It was actually a joke ad-libbed by this 99-year-old legend. Not such a bad last line.
