GEORGE C. SCOTT-Discusses George S. Patton, 1997 

General Patton's granddaughter was my English teacher many many years ago. She didn't like speaking about him, but she did tell us that George C. Scott portrayed him with excellent accuracy.

My father was a tank commander under General Patton and he told me that Patton was a true leader.

Patton's purpose was not to "Go to War". His purpose was to achieve VICTORY.

I just watched 'Patton' again for the umpteenth time the other night! What a fabulous movie! That voice! That last speech he makes at the end still blows me away! That Peacemaker on his hip! The Man, the Mystique, the Legend!

My Dad fought in Patton's Third Army, Fourth Armored Division, 66th Armored Field Artillery Battalion as a scout. He said that the movie Patton was as close to the real thing that we will ever see... except his voice. General Patton probably would have wished to have a voice like George C. Scott's!

In the film, when General Bedell Smith was upbraiding Patton for his embarrassingly open hostility toward the Soviets, Patton replied, "I'm no diplomat! I'm a combat soldier!" and he was right. You don't win wars by worrying about hurting feelings and offending people. My late father was old school Army (1948-1969). He could be diplomatic when he had to be; and he could be blunt and to the point when he had to be. "Patton" was one of his favorite movies, too.

George C. Scott was a phenomenal actor. He role in Anatomy of a Murder as the prosecutor was riveting.

My Father was in the US Army for 17 years. He was a master sgt. & a cook & was such a good cook generals used to ask him to cook for him. This is how he eventually wound up in 3rd Army and I have NEVER met a man who served under him who did not talk of him with reverence and respect. I met some former black tankers in San Francisco and they had the 3rd Army logo painted on the side of their houses and we talked for awhile about the war, the Bulge and how they felt about Patton. They loved the man. My father was in the Fiilipines, bombed at Pearl Harbor, North Africa, Sicily, D Day, across Europe, the Bulge, German occupation, Korea and recalled to active duty in the Cuban Missle Crisis. He had called my Mother to say that if you hear the siren go off on the roof of our apartment building to not try to leave town as she would have nowhere to go and that she and I would have only 15 minutes to live. We lived in a building 2 miles from the White House. That is how close we came to nuclear war. Thank you for posting this. I subscribed and Patton is my favorite film.

General George Patton was a legend, flat out. He might’ve won the European war theater earlier had he been given more resources; Ike had to be a diplomat when allocating precious war resources and such.

This was less than two years before Scott passed on; the years of drinking had taken a toll. But it is noticeable about how he readily admits it was the role of a lifetime. He did the last days of Patton which was very gritty and to the point some years later and he said he got to be more honest about Patton then the other move did about how he felt about Bradley for example. and Eisenhower. The Last Days of Patton you do need to watch; he knew his time was over and really had no idea what to do now. It was a mercy in the end that the accident happened.

The reason the movie works to stupendously: If you love Patton, you love the movie. If you hate Patton, you love the movie.

I think General, Patton was the greatest. He was even admired by the German High Command. In particular, Generalfeldmarschall, Erwin Rommel of the Panzer Division. Patton did say we had fought the wrong enemy. That the Soviets posed a greater threat than the Germans.

Patton was a great movie and George C. Scott killed it and was well deserving of the Oscar he was awarded (but did not accept).

Guts and testosterone in action. Blended with high military knowledge. We need those type of Generals today.

There are certain roles that Actors inhabit and are almost lost within the character to such a point that you forget they are actors. Brando as Vito Corleone... Rod Steiger as Captain Gillespie... and without a doubt, George C Scott as Patton. A magnificent portrayal of an immensely complicated man in an Epic movie. One of my favorite movies of all time.

My other favorite general played by Mr. Scott was General 'Buck' Turgidson in "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb".

My dad was in ww2 and never talked about the war, I asked my aunt if she knew why my dad never talked about the war since he died early. She said because he was in the thick of it. I was a kid in 1970 and we watched Patton on tv , 1972 according to google. After the movie my dad said , “they killed Patton, the men ( I assumed enlisted men ) hated him”. I didn’t ask anything more and he didn’t say anything else. I wish I would have. Too late.

I read where the Patton family were initially very unhappy with the choice of George C Scott since he was a pacifist but were thrilled when they saw the movie.

I had a good friend years ago whose father was on Patton's staff. His dad told him that Scott's characterization was so accurate that it was like seeing Patton's ghost.

Robert Mitchum, Burt Lancaster and Lee Marvin were all offered the role of Patton but turned it down. John Wayne wanted to play Patton but the job was never offered to him. Finally it was offered to George C. Scott, an actor who had had an up and down career in the movies so far.

George C Scott was excellent in the movie Patton. He also played an amazing Ebinezer Scrooge in the 1980's. One of my favorite Christmas movies.

I saw "Patton" on a honors high school trip to San Francisco. Definitely best seen on a big screen and big audio from Jerry Goldsmith's score, I rewatch it regularly in my home theater on a ten foot screen and surround sound system. Scott deserved that Oscar, he WAS Patton...

I watched quite a few of the “Biography” shows when they first aired. It was an excellent show, and Graves was an excellent narrator.

On the "acting" part of being a military leader, if you ever went to boot camp, you know this is true. One day, while on my first cigarette break during basic training, I saw a drill instructor from a distance tear into a new recruit. Made them cry. Then ducked around a corner and laughed about it with another drill instructor. 🙂

I am conflicted whether Alastair Sim or George C Scott defined for me the best Ebenezer Scrooge. GCS was a phenomenal actor, sadly missed.

Patton was an anomaly for the officer corps even in 1940. Friendenhall was much more typical for the Army’s Officer corps. Marshal and Eisenhower were not as experienced in combat as Patton but both viewed him as essential to Allied victory. A US Army commanded by men like General Friendenhall loses many more men, more battles and perhaps the war.

Patton understood that the best way to preserve his soldiers lives was to win as quickly as possible, which is why he was so aggressive.

I watched the DVD "Patton" played by this man George. C.Scott, his portrayal of General George. S. Patton was exceptionally well played including his close resemblance of this American War Hero. The DVD in the "Commentary Section" interviewed Scott about doing this role, then, will surprise you of what he had to say then.

George Scott didn’t show for the Oscar’s the year he won the award. I often wonder what his motivation was to miss out on this monumental moment in history.

If I were the actor who played the soldier that Patton slapped I'd probably have been scared to death in the scene. George C Scott played the part so realistically in that and other scenes like when he stood outside, daring those planes to "shoot him right in the nose". No mistake that Patton loved his men. He could have been shipped to the US and probably given a state funeral but he chose to be buried with his men who never came home.

Graves and his brother James Arness were Veterans.

I would loved to have had a conversation with both Patton and Scott. Those would have been magnificent conversations.

I knew a man that was his personal secretary. He said the movie portrayed him very well. He said he was with him when he said he had been reincarnated and also when he was shooting at the plane. He said these happened. He said every man that served would have gladly laid down their lives for him.

My favorite part of that movie was when he was at his lowest point… He had been relieved and had heard they were going to send him home. He said: “The whole world at war and I’m not in it? God will not let this happen. I am going to be allowed to fulfill my destiny! His Will be done.”

As World War 2 began on December 7, 1941, the war department thanked all officers 55 years of age of over, for their service and retired them. There were exceptions. Nimitz, MacArthur and Patton. It's because they were irreplaceable. Patton was bumped up from colonel to General and ended up being 4 star. Patton was chosen for his expertise. He took over in Africa and did a first rate job. He took Sicily in a month. When he was relieved of duty in Italy, the Italian campaign eventually came to a standstill. Patton's idea was to be on the German border in a short period of time. If that had been the case, the Normandy invasion might have been prevented. When he was relieved of duty it cost a great deal of American casualties. In his entire war career he had lost only one battle.

Great movie and great acting. It was important for him to know when he was acting. ….

"He should be remembered as a professional soldier who gave 100%, 100% of the time". I'm pretty sure Patton would approve of being remembered as such.

I had an uncle that served under Patton. he said Patton was not afraid of the enemy. he would ride on the front of a tank with an M1 across his lap. Bullets bounced around him but never hit him.

There's some audio files floating around out there of Patton giving speeches. What strikes one is that the man sounded just like Buddy Hackett.

It was just a Hollywood movie and not an accurate documentary. But I do think we need to mention the two men credited as screenwriters who won the Academy Award for “Best Writing, Story and Screenplay Based on Factual Material or Material Not Previously Published or Produced” - Francis Ford Coppola and Edmund H North.

George C. Scott was the consummate actor.......a great one for aspiring young actors to study .

Lot's of movies these days i don't like but the 1970 Patton movie with George C Scott was interesting informative and entertaining.

They broke the mold when Patton was made.

If you haven't seen the 1970 movie 'Patton' starring George C. Scott you're in for a treat. And if you want to see host Peter Graves in a WWII classic - it's 'Stalag 17' with actor William Holden and an all-star cast.

patton was a front line combat general commander... i mean i guess that's what got him in trouble. being a general you're pretty much a politician in uniform .. which he was not.
