This track was the start of Vanessa's singing career. George knew potent when he heard it. We can thank The Godfather of P-Funk for opening the door to her talent.
Was in Santa Barbara in 1986 when I discovered Clinton with this tune. Went straight to the record shop and brought the 12" back to France. A true very special moment
Steve Washington former member of funk band Slave and Civil Attack (Salsoul recording artists."Not Guilty By Reason Of Insanity") blessed this track with his heavy bass funk sound. he plays big chunky bass!
I still have this track on the 12 inch vinyl disco single. I did not know that was Vanessa Williams singing on this track until this year though. With Her voice in this track, it lends balance to to the sound of PFunk!
I don’t know about “ underrated”: When I was stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, I used to here this, along with “Do Fries Go With That Shake” ( same album) on radio station 92.1 WKQI, Hendersonville; “Nashville’s Power 92”. I believe that if a track from an album got airplay, it’s then cannot be underrated. But we all know of way too many songs on way too many albums, that were in multiple opinions, never received airplay and therefore would be underrated because people who never or seldom listen to the album more than once, NEVER get a chance to observe how really wonderful the rest of it is. Back then, if you called a radio station and asked for a certain track that wasn’t a top 40 hit on their respective charts, to be played and the d.j. complied and soon, if enough requests for repeated airtime play came about, then the record companies would release the track as a 45 single. Also note: what’s big in one part of this Country, may be unheard of in another part of It. One example I remember was when the Blackbyrds released their “City Life” album. In Detroit, the big hit was “Happy Music.” But I noticed that the big hit in the Texarkana, Arkansas/ Texas and Shreveport, Louisiana area was “ Rock Creek Park.” I had never heard this song played on radio stations in Detroit and when I spent the summer of 1975 in Texarkana, “Happy Music” was not a song that I heard on the same station ( only one r & b station available in that region). So with respects to the region of where you listened to music when this track dropped, maybe it did not get radio airplay.
Believe it or not, I have/had been looking for this jam since the late 80s, finally found it on 11/1/2020, ....one question, who's the "FUNKSTER" doing that exceptionally fine bass work, is it Bootsy Collins, because I do hear 👂his voice in the mix, no matter, irrespective of who it is, this is an "EXTREMELY FINE PIECE OF FUNK MUSIC " that somehow mostly flew underneath the (so to speak) funk/r&b radar of that time/day, but I finally found it....NOW, SCUSE ME WHILE I "ROLL UP ONE OF THEM THAAANGS" AND PUT THE HEADPHONES ON AND JAM TO THIS MOTHER****** !! 😉👌
