Let's just set it straight. George does no mastering. Producers don't do that. Mixing and mastering is handled by professionals. The only exception are some EDM artists, mostly lower level.
@@jgarofalo11 What do you mean when you say "mastering" exactly? Cause when you say that "it's the easiest thing" I think you don't really know what mastering is, which is okay. But George hasn't mastered any of their albums. Robin Schmidt mastered ABIIOR. He also did their first album, as per the credits.
Jamie William That is correct. But the problem is, everyone who knows how to produce music knows the process of mastering. However, pretty much no one is nearly as good at it, or have the proper tools for it, as real mastering engineers. Which is why If releases are never mastered or mixed for that matter by the producer himself. I understand what you mean, but George only masters the demos which is a different thing. Thats just applying limiters and compressor and eq to make it sound Alright for listening. I think he’s a fenomenal producer. One of my favorites actually! I just feel it’s important to point these things out as I think mastering engineers and mix engineers doesn’t get as much credit as they deserve. A lot of people seem to think (not you personally!) that its just to slap a limiter on and crank it, which is far from the truth. A bit of an art form in itself mastering!
Well I regret using the word "mastering" given the hornets nest it's opened- what I meant was synths, pads etc were written and added to recording by George, basically all sounds not recorded from "live" instruments are him. These are part of the composition of the songs and for me much more important than final "mastering" a producer may or may not have
Thank you for making this video. I wholeheartedly agree that George Daniel is an underrated drummer, and as the band's "sonic architect" he is an integral part of The 1975.
Yay finally someone giving George the praise he disserves , he is an absolutely fantastic drummer in my own personal opinion , and he is extremely underrated, and Even on the new album he does not disappoint , he uses the electric kit to his advantage he's just absolutely amazing
He's an amazing drummer but also is a great producer. His work is showcased on other artists from the 1975's record label Dirty Hit such as No Rome and The Japanese House. He's just a bit good innit
omfg thank you for this. the "chop style" of drumming is heavily "northern groove based" particularly known as the "manchester drumming sound". Very popular with a lot of northern bands of the late 80's to early 90's.
Though I know almost nothing about drums, I've always been infatuated with how George plays during "Sex". It's just so beautiful and I feel like his drumming is one of the main reasons I love the song so much.
Another thing I love about his playing is that he picks sounds from such a particular pallet. Especially on I Like It When You Sleep.. his signature snare and tom tones really add depth. Special mention is the part at the start of Shes American. Great video btw - Do some more!
Yes yes yes! All of this. He’s the reason I started taking lessons and bought a kit. He’s got such a unique style, and watching him live lit a fire under me to start drumming.
I don’t know why this has only just came up but I couldn’t agree more man. He sits back in the studio and makes the song sound amazing. Then live he just slams it!
The delayed drum hits are so awesome. I love shit like that. Dreams wouldn’t be the same without it, and songs like You and Me Together Song and a thousand others wouldn’t be even close to the same without it. The drummer for my band does the same thing, and it really adds accents to the song and keeps things interesting.
Goddamn this was before the Music For Cars albums too, that’s when George really started to shine underrated. He was for sure behind all of the complex garage beats on NOACF and his combination of organic and electronic sounds on ABIIOR is insane.
I seen The 1975 at a festival before I’d really heard their music. I pretty much immediately noticed how good the drummer was. Very very very good drummer indeed!!
Such a great breakdown man, his skills along with the unique way his drums are engineered in the studio truly sets them apart! Different genre, but I would like to see a breakdown of Motion City Soundtrack’s drummer, Tony Thaxton, I feel they get stuck with that “punk/emo/warped tour band” label that they never get a fair shake, the drumming in particular is so amazing, goes perfectly with the erratic but ultra tight music and almost mentally unstable lyrics!
He is passion fire and right power with the sticks. It’s not the first time in music’s history that some musicians, here an absolutely particular drummer, that were underrated and time made justice. Same here…just wait and see, because Daniel is specially good with not only tempo, even more with space and go in pro the song. Musically and particular personal patrons and rhythms (his way to make “Philadelphia” paradiddles alternate HH snare toms and ride to build a pattern is unique). I’m a fan of him here too! Great video! 🙏
Great clip Sweeney , totally agree. Went and saw them while they were in Australia with my daughter. I was one of the few dads in the audience that night but I don’t care - they were a great band with solid musicianship driven by George. Have played drums my whole life from the late 70’s and George is like Mel Gaynor from Simple Minds who elevated that band and propelled their songs with his powerful and strongly technical playing. Much appreciated your content for this vid 😎👍.
I mean, just in the fact that his one of a few “modern pop band drummers” that uses linear fills, the jdilla quintuplets groove thing, just makes him an over all an awesome drummer, you can tell that he has done his studying and knows the kit as the palms of his hands
I always liked the 1975 and always had a thing for Matty Healy and then I started watching live performances and took notice of George and I can definitely agree that I recognize his drumming over others.
Great video man! He's one of my favourite all time musicians. He's definitely the Max Martin and Matty is the Britney Spears 😂 I didn't know much about his drumming until I watched this but I have learned some things that I'll listen to going forward. He also produces a lot for some other artists on Dirty Hit.
heads.cars.bending live was absolutely elite no other song live vs studio is so starkly better live!!! nice video George is one of my favourite drummers of all time
Dude I saw these guys play in 2013 and I’ve been a fan of George since. Hes such a great person and a phenomenal drummer. If you get the chance man checkout our grooves on our RU-vid channel I think you’ll really really appreciate them! I mean it. Thanks and many blessings! - joston
all of these 4 cats are MAD talent. BUT, props to this video for saying the truth! in fact, the 1975 is really what you get when your rhythm section is top notch. ross and george are really the guys who make these songs what they are. everything else is just a flavor. so glad to see george getting some much needed accolades for keeping THIS kind of real human feel alive in today's horrible pop radio world full of fake beat-detective everything.
Not sure if you just artists in general, but someone who produces his own sound and loves hitting pockets people don’t normally notice is Jon Bellion. In his “The making of...” videos where he walks through his creative process, a lot of the time he talks a lot about the pockets he loves to hit.
I'll describe that "chop-style" best, which is also used by Owl City's original drummer (Matthew Decker) as a heavily sycopated, hi-hat driven, lyrically locked, hybrid kit drumming.
Seriously? I had this ony my mind ever since the first EP of drive like i do. And as a drummer its really hard reproduce what hes doing on the hi-hats. But to me he’s not underrated. I identify him as the heart that pumps the blood on 1975.
The unique thing about The 1975 is that their members are technically capable of playing genres requiring further technicalities, which is quite unlikely when you consider musicianship levels of other popular bands of '10s.
i don’t drum but i’m a musician and i think that not only is his drumming underrated, his producing is as well. to produce a good album, you need a mix of talent and learned skill, of which george has both. i think he parallels josh dun from twenty one pilots where the frontmen of the two bands get all the credit (being matty and tyler joseph) but their bandmates are certainly equally as good.
