Class is in session! Questlove Supreme prides itself on bringing you stories from masters of their craft. George Faison's story derives from a time that established and birthed the beauty of diverse Black dance and dancers to provide the foundation for what we see on the world's stage, film, and music videos today. Dancing has remained at the epicenter of his career, but Mr. Faison is also an actor, director, composer, producer, essayist, playwright, and writer who is the first Black choreographer to earn a Tony Award for the original Broadway production of The Wiz. How did that lead him to work with legends like Aretha, Stevie, EWF, and Ashford & Simpson? Listen up!

I LOVE "Don't Bother Me, I Can't Cope!!!!" It was the first Black Musical to have a Black lead, playwright, and director, the late Micki Grant who was also nominated for a Tony in musical direction. This interview right here is giving us a great chunk of history in dance and theatre!!! Thank you!!!

Thank you for the compliment. Mr. Faison choreographed the Broadway production, which framed the conversation accordingly.

I definitely prefer the film version of THE WIZ more. It was groundbreaking and is beloved by millions

We love it too (clearly), but one could argue that you could not get it without an incredible Broadway run (and in other cities) first...
@thewizboy

@QuestloveSupreme Yes. One could argue that. Because the film is actually based on a book by L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of OZ" and not based on this Broadway show which it clearly states in the opening credits of the film. There were many interpretations long before a Broadway show was an idea which was never an original idea either. Theater people tend to get real touchy between a Broadway show and an actual film, whereas a film/movie tends to reach a vast amount of people and lasts for generations. A film has more popularity than a stage show that the majority of people will never see. People who worked on the stage version of The Wiz always tend to avoid talking about the film version which is just as glorious and monumental in the arts as well. It deserves just as much credit and acknowledgment by these people. But you can never expect theater people to do this and also acknowledge the greatness and oftentimes uniqueness of a film version or different similar interpretations of the same story just outta respect for a different art form. Their pettiness just won't allow them to do so.
