Recorded live in Toronto on 6th December, 1974 at the Maple Leaf Gardens, the band & orchestra features: Billy Preston, keyboards; Jim Horn, saxophone; Tom Scott, saxophone; Chuck Findley, trumpet; Robben Ford, guitar; Andy Newmark, drums; Emil Richards, percussion; Willie Weeks, bass guitar; Hariprasad Chaurasia, flute; Rijram Desad, percussion & strings; T.V. Gopalkrishnan, mridangam & vocal; Gopal Krishan, vichitra veena; Sultan Khan, sarangi; Kartick Kumar, sitar; Kamalesh Maitra, percussion; Satyadev Pawar, North India violin; Alla Rakha, tabla; Harihar Rao, percussion; Lakshmi Shankar, vocal; Viji Shankar, vocal; Shivkumar Sharma, santoor; and L. Subramaniam, violin.

I experienced this at one of the Chicago concerts on this 1974 tour. I loved it then and love it even more now. George was brave to put this kind of music out there at that time. Critics said fans didn't like it and were dumbfounded by it. They didn't give us enough credit; most of us liked or even loved it. All the people I went there with really dug it. George was ahead of his time. And Ravi was a visionary, as well. 🙏

a blizzard hit that week. Detroit was the next stop (2 performances in a single day), and the planes were late coming from Chicago. Ravi was unable to make the journey - I think the Indian segment was skipped in Detroit, but I honestly can't remember.

Indian musicians are astonishing. Classical time signatures seemingly require telepathy. Saw Ravi Shankar and Allah Rakha several times. Awesome spontaneity...

Actually that's Andy Newmark in this clip. But I do recall Keltner taking over on that tour at some point (or maybe they were both on the band for a while). The show I saw in Oakland had Newmark on drums, for sure.

Fantastic! It's like Ravi Shankar meets Frank Zappa. The studio version of this and the other tracks by Shankar, Family & Friends can be found in the 3 disc set 'Collaborations' by Shankar & Harrison. They're on disc 3. But the new remastered version should be good, too.

I was at the Nassau coliseum on Dec 15 1974! I have the recordings of that show and the day show from the sound board. His voice was much better than in Vancouver.

Always loved and cared alot for him and his and all of the band paul ect and their family members I grew up watching them I had my very own 45 s my mom and dad would give me of them in the 60 s and the stones and robert plant ect a green apple bitten around it apple records for the Beatles felt like with that I was tops plus the jackson fivei would play aba and that ben song I cry for him alot such a nice boy live you all you all have me some if the best years of my life with your music and songs you and so many others I love music and movies dancing and art and rain thank you
