Living in the material world at #7 is wild, easily has some of the most beautiful songs in his discography, and my second favorite album of his.

I agree it does, there are just other albums in his canon that I like more. Ranking videos are just the opinion of me and I never expect it to tie in with everyone else's opinions so I would be interested in seeing your rankings of albums 11 to 6. I have done a deep dive review video of LITMW - feel free to check it out and I hope it gives a better insight into just how much I like it. Thank you for your comment

Thanks very much Robert, Im glad you enjoyed the video. I think if we're not honest with these reviews or rankings, there is no point in doing them. We cant wash over the fact that the solo albums (of any Beatle) are a little but hit and miss and you have to sort out the wheat from the chaff yourself. Plus buy pointing out the failings, it gives more weight to the songs/albums that you really like. Really appreciate your comment, so thanks for taking the time to post it.

It was a brave choice for both of us. I had only just completed getting all the Beatles albums. The solos are such a minefield but I didnt know that at the time. I'm guessing that it must have been cheap because I wouldn't have known anything about the album at the time (1976). And although the solo albums can be a little bit hit and miss, I really think Dark Horse is overly criticised. Plenty to love on that album. Thanks very much for your comment James

I can take it a step further too. I worked a brief period of time at a department store and was in charge of the record department and noticed the Dark Horse album was there. I think on my off work hours or when i had stopped working there i picked up the Dark Horse album, with no previews or reviews. I liked it. It was a little different but i liked it. I can't remember if i had the all things must pass 8 track yet or not so this was probably my first if or one of my first George albums. Hey buddy. Thanks for the great shout out at the beginning! Funny I too contemplated including the Wilbury’s albums in my ranking. So much so I listened to them a couple of times with George’s other albums. My conclusion was they felt more like a Dylan or Petty album with a song or two by Harrison. Absolutely love those albums though. And whenever I listen to them I feel infinitely cooler than everyone else as I’m listening to the Traveling Wilburys at that moment. Unless they’re also listening to them too making them also infinitely cooler. But I did laugh we both contemplated that inclusion.
@beatleytonesbeatleschannel
@beatleytonesbeatleschannel Год назад
Hey Dustin yes I think Volume 1 is a more rounded band album but Volume 3 is definitely more Dylan/Petty heavy - which of course cant be a bad thing - Im a big fan of both. I have to admit its been a long time since I felt infinitely cooler than anyone, anywhere, but Im glad youre still finding a way to pull it off 😂 So say you did include the Wilbury's in your ranking, where would the albums come ? Thanks as always for your comment
@BeatleDustino
@BeatleDustino Год назад
@@beatleytonesbeatleschannel trust me. If you’re listening to the Wilburys, you’re infinitely cooler than anyone who is not. As for where I’d rank them. That is tough. I couldn’t really identify them as strictly a George Harrison standalone album. But Vol. 1 would fall in the top 5, and Vol. 3 probably midway in the lower 5. I’m becoming such a Petty fan right now though. Not that I haven’t always been, but I’m collecting and listening to his entire catalog now. So I might be revisiting the Wilburys again soon, but with him as a focus.

I really like 'Gone troppo' especially 'Dream away' but i think i could only rank it higher than 2 or 3 of his albums. Glad to hear some love for the 'Hoagy Carmichael' covers. 'Baltimore oriole' is a top 5 George song for me, i like it that much! 'Living in the material world' is ovetdue a listen from me, i like it alot but i have to be in the mood for it. I don't play it as much as i do 'Gone troppo' for example....

Thanks very Kier. Glad you enjoyed the video.Of course you are absolutely right about Greece, but I do think of it as being an instrumental for two reasons really, the sort of 'greek themed' nonsense words like `I came acropolis , Monty Pythagorus ' business is kind of mumbled and buried in the mix and also the inner sleeve of the album lists the songt as Greece (instrumental) and those 6 lines are not printed on the lyric sheet - but you're not wrong. That hook in Dream away drives me nuts lol . I agree the Hoagy songs are great - when I first heard this album when it came out in 1981, Id never heard of these 2 songs or Hoagy Carmichael for that matter - you would have thought that having liked these songs so much that I would have investigated some of his other stuff by now, but I haven't but probably should. Know what you mean about LITMW - you definitely have to be in the right mood for it. Extra Texture Faves: You, The Answer's at the End & Can't Stop Thinking About You Least Fav: Grey Cloudy Lies 8. Somewhere in England Faves: Unconsciousness Rules, Life Itself & All Those Years Ago Least Fav: That Which I Have Lost 7. "Stuck inside a Cloud" "Rising Sun"....left me wanting more) 5. Thirty-Three & 1/3 (Crackerbox Palace!!!! First heard it on Best of Dark Horse CD) 6. Living in the Material World (Took me forever to find this album......) 7. Somewhere in England (My first album,,,,"Life Itself" ranks among my all-time favs.) 8. Gone Troppo (Being from a tropic island, love the breezy feel...That the Way it Goes) 9. Dark Horse (I love the songs. Just wish George had waited for his voice to recover) 10. At school there was a whole culture of borrowing records from friends. You were considered very uncool unless you arrived at school with an LP tucked under your armpit. So we would borrow records from each other , take them hope and tape them and then hand the Lp back the next day. I discovered things like Dark Side of the Moon, Ziggy Stardust and Who's Next etc simply by borrowing them from friends. My local library mainly only stocked classical records but in the 80s a library near where I works had CDs that we could borrow like books so I did that a lot then. Hi Tone, I really enjoyed this ranking. Although I do have all the George solo albums (except Electronic Sounds & Wonderwall Music) I always thought George struggled to create an excellent full album, unlike Paul & John. He was brilliant in The Beatles where he only had about 2 new songs per album (same for the Wilburys). I always found his voice very sleepy and weaker compared to John & Paul. After saying that there is still plenty to enjoy within his solo catalogue. I'll watch the 2nd part later on tonight. Mmmm, I wonder what no. 1 would be? lol My no. 1 is actually the self titled from 1979 but I'm weird lol. Cheers - Richard

Thanks very much Richard, glad you enjoyed the video. Even though Im a Beatlehead, I won't whitewash over the fact that the solo albums of all 4 are an absolute minefield. There needs to a lot of sorting of the wheat from the chaff. The creation of the excellent full album, is few and far between even for John & Paul - I would say John has 3 imo and Paul has maybe 4 (which isn't a lot considering how many albums he's made) so I agree George struggles with this too. But then again so do almost every artist. How many absolutely perfect albums are there out there? I think most major artists have at least 1 or 2 in them. For Bowie I would say Ziggy and Hunky are flawless from Start to finish even though I love all of them from Space Oddity through to Scary Monsters. Floyd Dark side and Wish you were here. The Stones I dont think made a perfect album until Beggars Banquet. And so it goes on. So basically I agree with you, once you've sorted through them there is plenty to like in George's solo career. Hi Tone, hope you’re well. Apologies for the recent radio silence, things have been a bit crazy down here and I am now playing catch up on my favourite channels. In doing so, I decided to comment on this video before moving on to part 2, so I will no doubt also comment on that in due course. Not much to argue with on your ranking so far. I agree Somewhere In England is underrated, but must admit I have a preference for the tracks that were removed over the tracks added - with the exception of All Those Years Ago. While I generally like the lyrics/sentiments of the replacement tracks, I think they suffer musically by trying to be too commercial - Teardrops in particular. Writings On The Wall was a standout for me from the first time I flipped the All Those Years Ago 45 back in the early 80s. Having said “England” is underrated, I have been a bit surprised by some of the recent re-evaluations of Troppo - in some cases ranking it higher than GH and 33 1/3!! I enjoy it for the most part, but think you have it in its rightful place. I also agree Dark Horse is better than it’s usually given credit for - coincidentally it was my first George album too, and also probably because it was cheap. I bought budget label copies of it and Ringo in 82 or 83. Do I like it more than Material World? I’m not sure. Probably depends on my mood - DH is definitely the more upbeat listen of the two, and like you I struggle with The Lord Loves….. Anyway, thanks for another great video, can’t wait to get into part 2. BTW I’m off the Canada/USA on Monday (24th) for a month. Amongst other things, I have tickets for Cirque du Soleil’s Love which I never really expected to get the chance see - can’t wait.

Hi Jason, Im very well thanks mate and hope you are too. No worries re recent silence - we all would like to spend more time on YT but life always seems to get in the way :-) so totally understand. There's no obligations here but always great to hear from you of course. Glad you enjoyed the video and sounds like we are pretty much in line with our rankings. I've also been surprised at the recent love being thrown at Gone Troppo, and its a decent album but I always think with these rankings in terms of, if I was making say a 3 CD compilation of the best of George's entire career, how many songs from Gone Troppo would make the cut, and the answer for me would be - not many. Sounds like we have similar reasons for a soft spot for the Dark Horse album but it's definitely better than it usually gets credit for. Would that have been the Fame label in Oz for that and the Ringo album or did you guys have a them on a different budget label? When I ddi my deep dive review of the LITMW album, I found that I liked it a lot more than I remembered liking it previously but not enough to overhaul Dark Horse for me. Hopefully the revamping of George's albums that we now expect to happen may see the original Somewhere in England included in its original form with the original sleeve as some sort of bonus material - I would welcome that. Your trip sounds fantastic, Ive never been to Canada but I did go to Vegas in 2015 and saw the Love show - it will blow you away especially the soundtrack and the volume it gets played at. Have a safe trip and an amazing time (vegas generally is off its head) and thanks as always for a really great comment mate.

@@beatleytonesbeatleschannel Yeah, I’m really looking forward to Love. I’ve got the soundtrack and “making of” dvd, but imagine the show is something else altogether. Love aside, I’ve got 2 weeks in Montreal/Quebec, a week at Harvard doing my second Executive Leadership program at the Kennedy School of Government, and finishing up in Vegas/Grand Canyon. The only other time I’ve been to the USA was February 2020, and I made it home just as Covid was becoming rampant. That trip also coincided with superbowl and Trump’s state of the union address - not sure which was the greater spectacle 😂 The budget label down here was Axis. If you are interested, we got the following albums reissued on Axis in the 80s: The Beatles Rock and Roll Music Vol 1 and Vol 2 Beatles Live At The Hollywood Bowl Plastic Ono Band Lennon’s Rock’n’Roll Mind Games Wildlife Ringo Dark Horse Best of George Harrison

@@jasonardler8373 Hi Again Jason, yes the show is pretty spectacular, you will love it. Your trip sounds amazing , I really fancy Canada , I have a couple of friends who live in Vancouver, on the other side of the country to where you're going. When we went to Vegas we also went to the Grand Canyon. We took a helicopter ride to it and from there you can get a boat ride along the Colorado River also worth doing while youre there. Thanks for the info on the budget label stuff. Ah right your budget records were released on Axix who I haven't heard of before. The line up is almost identical to the stiff we got on the budget MFP and Fame labels although I dont remember us getting POB, Wild Life, Hollywood Bowl or Oldies - I dont think these ever came out on the budget label here although Im not sure as I dont have any of them on the budgets. best of luck with completing your leadership program - is that an exam or a course (or both).

@@beatleytonesbeatleschannel thanks for the travel tip, Tone. I will definitely look into the boat trip too. Harvard is course work only, but it’s a full 7.5 days, including 4 evenings, so pretty intensive. The last one I did resulted in a complete career re-think, so hoping this time around will be equally impactful.

I love Gone Troppo. Some of those songs get a lot more play even today. I would have put Sonewhere In England higher than Dark Horse. But that's why we listen and opinionate right?

Yes absolutely Charlie. Everybody hears things differently and has their own favourites and that's what makes ranking videos interesting. I love to hear how other fans rank these albums. Gone Troppo courts quite a bit of favour with fans . I have a soft spot for Dark Horse but I totally understand why you would rank Somewhere in England higher. Thanks very much for your comment

Great as Sat Singing is, I think All Those Years Ago was a better option but maybe Sat Singing was better than say Blood From A Clone. I think overall we got a better album with Somewhere in England

I think 'Material World' works much better with the extra tracks: 'Bangladesh', Deep Blue' and maybe even 'Miss O'Dell', otherwise it was too ballad heavy, imo...

I don't get why you think, slow, sad, depressing songs are bad? you seem to think a song can only be good if fast and happy? Also you didn't like lyrics to a song as it didn't sound very "Christian" to you! You do realise that George wasn't Christian when he was writing these songs?
@beatleytonesbeatleschannel
@beatleytonesbeatleschannel Год назад
Ok well the first thing is there is nothing for you to 'get' because I that isn't what I think at all. There are many examples of slow, sad songs throughout these 2 videos that I say are brilliant or excellent ballads etc. However, if I did think that ONLY fast or happy songs were great (which I dont), that would just be my opinion which again would be nothing for you 'get', - its just an opinion, my opinion, which I am entitled to, just as you are entitled to yours. There are no right or wrong answers here. With reference, to being christian, I think you are taking it too literally. By using the word 'christian' I am talking about a christian attitude as in say 'charitable' rather than a literal religion. To explain it further, Im saying in 'the lord loves the one' he is saying words that basically allude to the attitude of if you dont love the lord then he doesn't love you back which is not how most something that most religions adhere to. This actually comes from Krishna scriptures which I mention in my deep dive review video of LITMW when talking about this song. Hope that explains things

"You" was given to Ronnie Spector, a backing track was made but it never got recorded. You can hear Ronnie's vocal from the backing track in the fade of George's version. Why he left the song in such a high key I have no idea. He should have done what Ringo did and put out a best of to fulfill his EMI contract. I'm not a big fan of the DH album, but like you said there are some stand out tracks.
@beatleytonesbeatleschannel
@beatleytonesbeatleschannel Год назад
Well yes Ken. I dont know for sure but I would guess the reason they didnt bother changing the key ad rerecording it was that George was not very interested in this album and just wanted to get it out to end his obligation with Apple - so the quicker the better for George and recording it again with a key change would have taken more time. That would be my guess. Dark Horse isn't really most peoples cup of tea but plenty on there that is good and as I said, I just have a soft spot for it. Thanks as always for your comments
