George Kell worked diligently at all facets of the game, relying on constant practice to become a solid hitter and a sure-handed fielder. He batted over .300 nine times and topped American League third basemen in fielding percentage five times. Utilizing a strong and accurate throwing arm, Kell led the league in double plays six times, assists four times and in putouts twice. In 1949, Kell dramatically captured the American League batting title when he edged out Ted Williams by less than two ten-thousandths of a point, .34291 to .34276.

Loved him so much. Him and Ernie Harwell along with Ray Lane and Larry Osterman as their sidekicks had a hand in raising me. "Thanks Larry and good afternoon everyone!"

We Michiganders were graced by the easy style of George Kell the broadcaster for more than 30 years. To hear his work on the '68 Series here on RU-vid is also a treat and many realize that you can count the fingers on your hand "One, Two, Three, Four and 'Fahve,'" thanks to George. He didn't choke a lick in this speech. God bless him.

I rewatched this speech having watched the final 1987 regular season game between the Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays. George Kell’s PBP call of that game - one of the most nerve-wracking games in modern baseball history - is possibly the high point of Kell’s broadcasting career. With his broadcast partner, Al Kaline, they created a Master Class in baseball television broadcasting that should be required viewing by all who aspire to those jobs. Even now, 35 years later, you can watch that broadcast and you’ll enjoy it as if it were today. Even more so if you’re a Detroit Tigers fan. 😉 God bless the soul of George Kell: A great Hall of Fame ball player, iconic broadcaster and even a better man. You, sir, are truly missed.

Those of us in Detroit were blessed to have George Kell. Both as a player and as a broadcaster. I am not old enough to have seen him play, but I am old enough to have heard him, while watching Tigers baseball. I long for those days. Rest in peace Mr. Kell.

He had an impressive season in 1950 with the Detroit Tigers: a .340 batting average with 114 runs, 218 hits, 56 doubles, and only 18 strikeouts. Today, a ballplayer could not achieve these numbers without having a higher number of strikeouts in a season.

I miss that voice so much. It was the voice of televised Tiger games. It's still the best voice.

Between George Kell and Ernie Harwell, I was lucky enough to grow up a Tigers fan and have these gentlemen teach me the game of baseball. As a young boy I thought that southern drawl was just the way announcers spoke when calling games. George should have gone into the Hall much earlier; his stats will attest to that. Lou Whitaker has the same kind of stats and should be in the Hall!

I might be a little late but my great grandpa and George Kell were best friends. George Kell even gave my grandma a wedding gift. He was so nice to my family and we truly miss him.

I loved George Kell as a broadcaster but if you examine his career numbers as a player he does not belong as a member of the Hall of Fame. He was a very good third baseman but not a great one. He batted a fine .306 for his career but only made 2,054 hits of which 78 were home runs. I guess one must keep in mind that when Kell was elected to the Hall of Fame back in 1983 there were only six other third basemen enshrined. Subsequently such greats as Mike Schmidt, Wade Boggs, George Brett, Paul Molitor, Chipper Jones, and Scott Rolen have represented the third base position in Cooperstown along with three exceptional Negro League starts (Judy Johnson, Jud Wilson, and Ray Dandridge).

He did not, they didn't play together but this was about 7 years into their working TV together. Al wasn't at the event. He was probably calling a game.
