And just hear Seraphina at her best! The agility, the warmth, the power, the incredible balance between registers!

I'm not an expert on America or this place, but Tippet Art Centre's location sounds like a weird, out of the way place for someone to be slamming out the Carmen Variations! A fiery rendition of a gypsy dance in such a calm, scenic place. Wonderful piece and performance!

George doesn't have Horowitz's coloring which makes the piece whimsical if you will. George possesses the dynamics and he's not playing like some soulless machine though. It may odd for me to say this, but I think his take feels like feisty Carman singing the Gypsy Dance.

Wow I think you are extremely critical, and unless you're someone who can deliver exactly what you say the pianist lacks I think you're being a real ass. Technically this is a very clean delivery. It's not Horowitz's demonic energy but there is enough intensity to say this was enjoyable and proficient. You're living in cuckoo land if you expect each pianist to step up and play like Horowitz who composed the variation himself. Very hard to match.

first time hearing someone not Yuja Wang playing this haha

George's performance is much closer to Volodya's score than Yuja's. I generally love her playing, but she makes a bit of extraneous embellishments in the opening measures, then inexplicably omits over 30 seconds of the original, from about 2:50 - 3:25. Like I said, big fan, but this just has me a bit puzzled.... Bravo, George!

I undertand there were lots of adaptations over time. It's possible George played a genuine version without the part you cited.

@@joseki6644 Hi. Apparently you misunderstood my statement. It was YUJA, not George, who omitted the 30-second segment I cited. George played the 1968 TV concert version in its entirety -- and quite brilliantly, I might add.

@@arpeggiomikey oh right. Yuja's interpretation is impressive but to rift at the speed she does means it won't be clean, same for Horowitz himself on occasion. Haven't studied Yuja's enough actually but yeah doesn't sound exactly the same in notes .

not necessarily......there are many, many, many shades of gray between the ideal performance of it and the worst possible one. You're just a ball of sunshine, aren't you?

I feel sorry for this pianist as much as what I felt sorry for poor old Horowitz. A prodigious clown's career. Hopefully it satisfied, and satisfies, them both. Surely there appear to be enough people throwing peanuts.
