I'm a woman, and I hate that trope, too! Treating all men as inferior doesn't make you a "boss;" it makes you a narcissistic, misandrist bully! P.S. Moana is definitely *not* a "girl boss." They view feminine traits like empathy and kindness as a weakness, but it was Moana's strength since she was a baby!

As a straight woman myself, I 100% agree. I started noticing the change in the 2000s when I was in my 20s and wasn't liking what I was seeing. I come from a wonderful family and am the only girl with 2 younger brothers. Believe me, I was a tomboy and was treated equally by my brothers. Not to mention that most of my cousins from my age were guys. Like between the Summer of 81 to Spring of 82, I was the only girl born on my mother's side. At the same time, I was also a girly girl who is still a sucker for romance since I grew up on Fairytales. If I saw anyone treat guys as 'inferior', I lay it on them thick! It's why when I heard about The Last Jedi's production, I was SOO angry.

"If you have to point out that a female character is strong, you haven't done your job as a storyteller." Thank you so much for this. There's an essay I read years ago entitled "Why I Hate Strong Female Characters" that tries to make this point - think it's behind a paywall now. Anyway, we never talk about strong male characters - gee, I wonder why. Putting female characters in this strongbox is what's wrong with feminism. They never see female characters as individuals, but as representatives of the team. And female characters doing anything womanly, having normal emotions and drives, is seen as letting down the team, as a weakness. As an author and a reader and a woman on my own heroine's journey, this attitude gets very tiresome very quickly.
@disgruntledtoons
@disgruntledtoons 2 месяца назад
What's wrong with feminism is that they never wanted equality. They want things to be the other way around. They want to replace the Patriarchy with a Matriarchy. Because the Patriarchy lives rent-free in their heads, they cannot conceive of strength being manifest in any way except the forceful dominance of another person. That's why their strong women are always dominant and win every fight.
@jacob4920
@jacob4920 2 месяца назад
Today's feminists don't understand TRUE feminism! That infuriates people like my own mother (who grew up, and came of age, during the 70's feminist movement, that actually fought good and hard for a lot of the legal rights that women today enjoy, including being able to hold their own jobs, without needing the husband's legal consent! What today's "feminists" are fighting for is nothing more than two-bit VENGEANCE, and that pisses real feminists, like my mother, off to no end!!
@Zodia195
@Zodia195 2 месяца назад
100% agree (and I am a woman too who likes to write as a hobby). A person becomes strong by their actions . . . not words. I grew up in a strong female and male household. I loved being active and 'boyish' with my brothers and other relatives, but I also loved doing my girly stuff too. For me when it came to writing chars in general, I never cared about what they 'represented' I cared more about char development and how they fit within the story. And if my females just happened to be 'strong and independent', it was a result of how they developed.
@sailormatlac9114
@sailormatlac9114 2 месяца назад
The most off putting aspect of what you describe is that it makes the character look fake and thus unrelatable and obnoxious to spectators. Their understandings of what makes a human "strong" seems to be flawed. Being harsh is one way and generally, it's associated with villains for a good reason.
@rwinger2481

Thank you very much. It is why I am very critical at what Warner Bros. was doing with the Looney Tunes (specifically inconsistent female characters) while Ann Sarnoff was CEO. Pepé Le Pew got MeToo’d. And the Tiny Toons reboot was so bland in my opinion, no surprise that it was written by an activist, Erin Gibson, known for her political podcast Attitudes! as well as Funny or Die. Some of the recent spin-offs wanted to focus on characters that are popular with girls. Lola Bunny, who I remember was rebooted back in the 2010s in a sitcom iteration of the Looney Tunes where she was written to match her voice actress, Kristen Wiig, and her comedic chops. There was another iteration where they made her sporty like in Space Jam but with an unpredictable zany edge that made her a fun and humorous character. Now since LeBron Space Jam, Lola Bunny and the Granny character from the Sylvester and Tweety shorts were written to be like the strong and capable females Hollywood expects that feel like they are just there for empowerment instead of making the audience laugh. We are allowed to like or dislike characters based on how they were written and executed, not because of labels. Whatever the character, and whatever the genre, I expect it to be written well with motivations and traits that relate to the audience.

This isn't actually all that hard a question to answer: Peltz is a friend of Perlmutter and Perlmutter is a friend of Trump. It's that simple, and stupid. George is just as liberal as the next guy in Hollywood, and, as much as he may dislike and even resent Lying-Corporate-Overlord Bob Iger, at least Bob is a Liberal in Good Standing. Letting someone on the board - someone who might end up steering Disney, the current owner of your IP children - who might just be an ally of that evil, racist, evil, angry, evil, bigoted, (and did I mention evil?) Orange Man . . . that simply cannot be allowed to happen! Churchill once said, ""If Hitler invaded Hell, I would make at least a favourable reference of the Devil in the House of Commons." That's the logic. And, there's also whatever Bob paid (or at least promised) Lucas for the support to sweeten the deal.

I think the film industry is lacking passion with writings and film making. Its the reason why we as movie fans tend to look back on nostalgic classic films than what is being produced today.

George needs to point out Leia is strong in interview when strong females doesn't need to be pointed out. Screw you George Lucas you have no right to call Han and Luke idiotic clowns and claimed Leia the hero. Did this fool even watch his own movies? Ughhh. Leia is not the hero you think she is, Georgy. She doesn't do much other than banging a slug gangster in a metal bikini in front of everyone. Episode 4: she needs to be rescued, calls chewy a walking carpet and sits at yavin for the rest of the movie while these so called clowns battle at the death star. Episode 5: she sits at echo base, gets captured at cloud city and needs to rescued again this time by lando and lobot. She lets Vader escapes and failed to rescue Han from Boba. Episode 6: she fails to rescue Han again, got stripped and humiliated turning into Jabba's sex slave and needs to be rescued again by Luke. She befriends Ewoks but didn't help her friends when the Ewoks wanna eat them so luke and freaking c3po had to rescue themselves. Then, she got shot. Episode 7: she's a lousy leader who let the first order rise and destroyed her new republic (5 planets) in the most let down way possible. She causes Hans death by giving him a bad advice where Han went defenselessly towards Kylo ren because Leia told him to talk some sense to him. Then, she walked past & ignored chewy (the walking carpet as she called him) and hug a random stranger she never met instead and sidelined Han's best pal. Episode 8: she doesn't do anything other than defying laws of vacuum in space, physical assault and demoted a straight white man after literally saved the resistance, stunned him, and took a nap for the majority of the movie . When she called for help, nobody responded to her but in the next movie, they did respond to Lando and Po which says a lot about her. She also needs to be yet again rescued by Luke. She did the right thing in the end by trusting Po but I'm not giving her credit here because she's just changing her mind from a bad stand. Episode 9: she supposedly trains Rey which is BS since ray is already more powerful than anyone. Doesn't do anything in the movie except complaining peoole should be more optimistic and then dies. Episode 3: she's just a cry baby

The balance is, Star Wars like many other brands, was a boy/male brand. I want boys to have ther own zone and see heroic men, sure, with female involvement and support, maybe a subplot, but I don't want this overt 50/50 stuff. In SW's OGT, Leia, was kick arse and cool! Yet, the plot revolved around Lukes journey. In fact, to free Luke's story up, we can see throughout Empire, Leia reacts to Han in the same manner as Luke does in the first film. The idea of the woman having a civilizing humanizing affect on the lads is such a powerful trope. How it's treated with utter disdain, or done in such a demeaning, disrespectful manner nowadays, is nothing sort of a travesty.

@@gregr3720 Lucas was set to make the sequel trilogy himself if Disney didn't buy him out. I never believed that he sold out to Disney because fans were mean to him. It's much more likely that Lucasfilm was hurting financially. It was a private company, so we'll never know for sure, but George said that he was concerned for his employees losing their jobs. By 2012, cheap CGI was likely undercutting his special effects business, his live-action Star Wars series couldn't get off the ground, and the animated Clone Wars series was very expensive to make but only bringing in mediocre revenue. George had said a few years earlier that he was never going to make the sequel trilogy, but then he changed his tune. He probably realized it was the only thing left that would turn a decent profit. What killed Captain Marvel for me is that she was a jerk, and remained pretty much a jerk to everyone around her. And that all she had to do to unleash her power was just decide to - no learning, no personal growth, no real obstacle to struggle against. Just insulting and outshining all the menfolk from the first frame to the last. Even the little childhood montage at the end showed she was *always* one to stand up after a fall...so yeah, she didn't have to change anything about herself except stop being lazy.

What killed Captain Marvel is that they took a female fighter pilot from the early days of that being a thing and made her weakness... self-belief? Fighter pilots have egos the size of the moon! Rationally, she should have already accomplished her so-called character arc before the movie even started. She had already achieved what is a pinnacle in the US military. There was a way to make that character work but they were uninterested in giving her any kind of logical arc.

That's straight up ridiculous to think that society is going to be forever tainted by social justice politics. Every era experiences various social movements that come and go. The current one is no different it will also end. Just like the hippie movement and the Cold War. Anyone who thinks the feminist social justice movement will last forever is either not living in reality or is paranoid. This current social justice fad was never meant to last forever because it can't it's impossible. It is extremely unpopular and it's waning especially compared to 2014 - 2017. George erased the theatricals from public existence, he booted out the people who made the OT successful, like his ex wife Marcia, he surrounded himself with yesmen, which all led to the Prequels disaster. He then grew salty over the fans reaction, because George cannot handle criticism, probably why he didn't like the EU, because unlike the PT fans actually liked the EU. I think in the end, it's clear to me that his ex-wife and potentially others would have been emotional support for him to deal with the backlash against Jar Jar and others. I think you may have a point, perhaps he thought too highly of himself due to his success instead of continuing to trust in the teamwork that made the OT happen. Even Luke and Han talked a lot about them participating in editing the voice lines... it's like he just stopped letting people be his friend. The people working on the OT could have just lied to him through omission and never complain if something feels a bit off. But personally I think Episode 1 was fine. Yes, I'm sure it could have been better if he was still married at the time, but the ultimate failure here is him not getting backup emotional support from whatever friendships he had during the OT. Perhaps just the fact that a lot of the actors were unavoidably new to him was a part of the issue. Maybe having actors from the OT show up on set to give their opinions could have made a difference. Just pay them a small amount for participation, some of them might have even potentially want to do it for free and they wouldn't turn down a little money if they thought he would refuse their help should they choose to do so. Like the amount of corrections people said were happening really makes it clear to me that it was a team effort. And he just makes it seem like it isn't. I respect that he had some fantastic ideas and a great vision, but to think that he could have all that success without people watching his back is just crazy. Were Episodes 1-3 all great? Yes. Would it be possible for them to be better? Yes again. Could they have been made well enough that he would be unable to receive put downs that caused him to give up the franchise? I don't know, but receiving put downs doesn't have to mean you back down from your goals. And yet that's what he did and he weakened himself to the point that he backed down from his goal of eventually making Episodes 7-9. Anyway, say what you will about Filoni but he's not even close to the problem person that Kennedy is. I mean I haven't watched all of the Mandalorian yet(just 4 episodes), but so far I have an overall good impression of his work. I can't imagine someone thinking that hiring him is any worse than the actor that played Padme for example. I can maybe agree with you on the Iger vs Peltz thing though. On the one hand we have a guy who literally didn't check to make sure promises were kept and on the other we have a guy that I know next to nothing about, but seeing that he's been involved with Marvel stuff seems speculative at best. I'm not sure what this George voting for leadership thing is all about but I haven't seen very many shows from Marvel that I absolutely hated. There are plenty that I dislike parts of like explosions don't need to be that loud, who cares about realism I want to enjoy a show without having to hide from the sound effects...and then there's everything that Deadpool and wokeness represents... if he was able to put a stop to such things and didn't well I am not sure he's any better than Iger so maybe you're overreacting a little there. People talked a lot about how Wonder Woman or Captain Marvel or whatever shows they were was woke and I don't know, never watched 'em...but considering the other problems the branding has had, it wouldn't surprise me to find out the rumors were true.

It's incredibly slimy and malicious on Igar's part to do this to a man who has already suffered enough (health problems, divorce, constant harassment from OT purists and prequel haters that murdered his creative drive and so on). Both Iger's memoir and Lucas's interview on the Charlie Rose show make it abundantly clear that Lucas hates what Iger has done to his work. Now one thing that I will remind people about the relationship between Han Solo Leia and Luke Skywalker. George Lucas’s idea for the Skywalker Twins is was that George was going to bring a totally new character in a second female character in Empire, strikes back or return of the Jedi. But abandoned this new female character this second Skywalker. And merged it with princess Leia and made them one in the same. And the main reason why George abandoned this new second female character is because of the relationship that Carry Fisher, Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford had he loved that these three people had a strong bond with one another and he did not want to screw it up.

No need to crap on Luke and Han just defend a position that's not necessary to defend.
@quoniam426
@quoniam426 2 месяца назад
NO ! Hermione is NOT the only intelligent in the trio, in the movie perhaps but not in the books. Hermione is booksmart, anticipates contingencies but has NOT the detective mind and insight to be on the case alone. Harry has that mind. Actually Harry Potter is closer to Agatha Christie's works than you think, Harry is Hercules Poirot, Hermione is Miss Lemon, his secretary and Ron is more like Hastings. Each has something to bring to the story, Hastings seems stupid and simple but sometimes notices simple things that completely fly over Poirot's intellect. Miss Lemon organizes things and even brings things up to Poirot that he didn't take into account. Rowling played it very clever not stereotyping them too much according to psychology. True, Harry is not the profound intellectual that Poirot is but has the detective mindset and the moral drive to justice. Hermione is more intellectual than Miss Lemon (even quite the activist at some point) but has the rest. Ron is much more like Hastings in regards to character, brave, not too bright and never shining over the others.

The thing that I hate so much about girl bosses is so many of them display entitlement of power that I remember from middle school; a lot the 'I want to lead the clique' type of stuff where girls fought to be the most popular and leader of their tiny friend groups while looking down on everyone else. It doesn't help that even within this, the personalities and variety of character types with girl-bosses is incredible shallow. They're all replaceable of each other because writing them locks you in specific personalities and trying to stray from it labels you a bigot or whatever buzzword they throw out. The reason I connect to make characters more is because they're ALLOWED to be a variety of flawed from the start and THEN rise from that. Girl bosses however have no flaws other than the 'flaw' of being born female in a world of incompetent and sexist men but then that's flipped by stating the girl boss is perfect BECAUSE she's female so in the end, she has no flaws and it's the rest of the world's fault they don't get on their knees and praise her. I said this when I looked at Invincible; I connect with Mark more than Amber despite 'looking like her' because; *I felt trapped in a shit job *I felt unsure of what I was doing with anything *I didn't know if I had a 'place' or anything Amber reminded me too much of the drama magnets I knew from school and online and I utterly loathed her but from observation, personalities like this are being inserted more and more because that's how the people making this slop act.

The best philosophy is, when writing a genuinely good story, design your hero, genderlessly. Create a person with specific and relevant characteristics and FLAWS which make sense in the tapestry of the saga. Assign keys and locks to your characters, later. That's how Ripley was borne. And it resulted in the birth of one of the most incredible hero(in)es in film. Unless their junk directly correlates with the story, it should remain irrelevant to who the character is as a person and a protagonist/antagonist.

They are also ignoring certain realities about how Hollywood (it would not surprise me to find out that "they" are trying to revise this ugly fact about Hollywood's still relatively recent past) used to be very concerned about having too many so called "minorities" cast in a movie they were planning on marketing to suburban white people. They were just playing with the concept of "crossover appeal" in not only marketing but also with production. Only with that it was more about who the audience was that they were considering making the movie for...and that even was something distributers were concerned about. It was not a pleasant fact of Hollywood's (again not so distant) past history. It is unfortunate but very much was how things were. Really how they still are kind of, only now things are not about crossover appeal or audience demographic and targeted marketing anymore. Instead it is about pushing out white men, straight white men, and replacing them with as many so called minorities and alphabet squad characters and actors to push an agenda instead. Which will be looked back on as just as ugly in time, all the same

For me growing up, 3 women come to mind when it comes to strong female characters. Sigourney Weaver(Alien), Carrie Fisher(Star Wars) and Mira Furlan(Babylon 5). For me they were well written and engaging characters that they played.

If they are writing for this mysterious "Modern audience" then, Modern audience they are seeking are immature spoiled 2 yr olds, and, it doesn't reflect well on the modern writers that they can't write to please more than one target group. I was 26 when the first Star Wars came out, It pleased me very much, sat in a theater and watched it with my husband of 2 yrs. Love that music! I've always loved that kind of science fiction myth/Fairy tale. Generally, I love myths, fairy tales, science fiction more than I can explain. There were kids of 5 that loved it also. Very much like what Mr. Pro said about identifying with the protagonist of the story. Entirely how the human soul works. The first Star Wars series was very much the Hero's journey. A female can go on a hero's journey, but hers' will be different than the male version. Read some books on Jung's theories, please. Anima and Animus, for instance. Also, No one mentions that Lucus entertained Joseph Campbell on his ranch around the same time he wrote and than directed Star Wars, when I learned that, I realized that what I loved about the movies was because Lucas knew what he was doing. Also, Star Wars is so crafted that it approaches the ancient philosophies of Hermeticism, Taoism, and Hinduism. I recognized that immediately. IN wiser times, we knew that for society and civilization to survive and prosper, we needed both Male and Female awareness (consciousness, understanding, influence, again, read some Jung and then Joseph Campbell, those are a starting place) Societies collapse when they become too out of balance. We must not become so rigid that we stagnate, nor so chaotic that we spin ourselves into destruction.

5:07 that is exactly why they started ranting about "representation", because that way they can insert their own solution instead of making others think about the problem.

I'm astounded anyone among the Star Wars fandom could possibly still be looking for a crumb of validation from George Lucas after he sold you and Star Wars down the River. You will never stop crawling back. Possibly why Disney and Lucasfilm have no respect for you.

Who cares about respect to us? The minimum they should have done is respect the story and at least pay lip service to George.

LaReina - “if you have to point out that a female character is strong then you didn’t do your job.” Tywin Lannister - “anyone who says ‘I am the king’ is no true king.”

Its funny, as what he is talking about. Is more then just the "non racist or sexist" way a viewing things. It also ties into the core rules of writing good stories. Take for example the hero journey. Rey fails at this because she never really struggles. She isn't like luke who ends up paying dearly for his actions. Case in point him losing his arm in order to attempt to save his friends. And this is due to the fact that the hero has to be on the down term for most of the story. A hero needs to be weaker then the things that they are fighting. As this raises the stakes and makes you think the hero. A character who will never die in a story. Actually has a chance to be killed off. You need to enstil the fear that the person you been following may not make it to the end of the story. Or else, why would you even care about this character? As you already know the ending. Bad guy is defeated and the hero is victories. This happens for 90% or more stories. You as a writer needs to trick the audience into thinking that the hero is in any kind of danger. and you can't do it by making them perfect. The badguy has to be an opposing force that gives the heroes limited chance of survival. A great example of this is D&D where the heroes fight a dragon. A dragon is a 50 foot tall gigantic monster that can fly and breath fire. And wights enough to crush a man, if you didn't count giant claws or fangs. This makes you feel like the heroes have little to no chance of survival. So when they survive and kill the dragon. You are like wow, i cant believe how creative they are. How their plan worked and yada yada. That is what makes good storytelling. Being able to trick the audience into thinking that the hero never stood a chance.

We’ve identified the problem with the female characters is that they don’t struggle and get almost no growth - they don’t learn. That’s what makes them unlikeable. And it just now strikes me…the people MAKING Disney Star Wars are largely the same…they think they are infallibly righteous in what they do and they don’t learn from their mistakes.

The heroes journey is what they're lacking. They start weak and imperfect...but eventually learn over time and grow to become a hero.

Lucas had his chance to fight for his legacy. When it mattered most he chose to kneel to the people he called white slavers. One day he may re-earn my respect. He's not doing it today.

First time we see Leia she shoots a stormtrooper between the eyes, the last time she pulls her weapon out she shoots a stormtrooper between the eyes. Also she never misses a shot....Han and Luke miss often. I give you the most beautiful and intelligent Girl Boss ever!
