George Lucas is our guide as we explore the real world history that inspired the worlds and stories of Star Wars. From WW2, to Ancient Rome, perhaps the universe inhabited by the Galactic Empire and the Republic before it are more similar to ours than we might think.

Great video! "I started out in anthropology, so to me how society works, how people put themselves together and make things work, has always been a big interest." - George Lucas People always forget that Lucas studied anthropology, sociology, psychology, literature and other subjects in Junior College, taking all those classes and even using some of his free time to study these on his own lead to him being filled with knowledge. Also the prequels do have some more modern politics too along side the ancient stuff. Lucas intentionally mirrors the Nayirah testimony in TPM's Senate meeting. A 15 year old girl testified that Iraqi soldiers were killing Kuwaiti babies during their invasion of Kuwait and this testimony was used by President H. W. Bush and many US Senators as a justification for getting involved with the Gulf War. But later on, it was revealed that Nayirah was the daughter of the Kuwait ambassador to the US and her testimony was completely false. She was essentially a pawn used by the America government to give them more influence and power in the Middle East. And America was the reason why Iraq was invading in the first place, Iraq was in debt to Kuwait because of the Iran-Iraq War and America was prolonging the war by aiding both sides (supplying Iraq while also secretly selling to Iran) so that neither side could really win in order to make sure America can have more influence and power over the Middle East. They invaded Kuwait so they could get rid of that debt just like how the Trade Federation ended up invading Naboo to get rid of trade route taxes. Padme in this film is a 14 year old girl who testifies that the Trade Federation invaded her planet and Palpatine uses this testimony to gain more power in the Republic by manipulating Padme into calling for a vote of no confidence. AOTC predicts the Iraq War despite being written pre-9/11 and the C3PO bodyswap gag also perfectly captures that post-9/11 attitude, yes I know how strange this sentence sounds but trust me it will make sense very soon. AOTC starts with a t*rrorist attack, tensions and paranoia boil up until it culminates in all out war, Bush says there's WMDs in Iraq and Jar Jar says the Separatists are a "direct threat" to the Republic. The Patriot Act is passed and Palpatine gains emergency powers. Elites manipulating the masses into supporting seemingly noble wars that ultimately only benefit those at the very top and give them more power. America gains more influence in the Middle East, Palpatine gains the key to controlling the galaxy once he's able to get to the end of the war. The clones and droids are essentially vessels of the collective unconscious, the galaxy's anger and hatred are projected onto these artificial lifeforms so these lifeforms can fight for them. In the real world, America's anger and hatred rose. They were looking for revenge and the people at the top point to Iraq, war with Iraq becomes immensely popular and anyone who isn't for the war is either pushed to support it or deemed un-American. C3PO is violently beheaded (AOTC has the most beheadings in a Star Wars movie and these beheadings are used to create a theme of losing sense and reason, the few Tuskens we see Anakin slaughter on screen were all beheaded, Jango gets beheaded too, etc.), he loses rationality and conforms to this collective unconscious, he's changed from a diplomat into a soldier. He has doubts at first, he's "built for etiquette not destruction" but he eventually gives in by shouting "die Jedi dogs!" as he opens fire. As the Iraq War dragged on, the need for revenge wore off and people came back to their senses. All that bloodlust and cheering for war felt like a fever dream to them. C3PO is dragged along by R2 and comes back to his senses once he's repaired, all he can say about the whole ordeal is that it was a "peculiar dream" but then we cut to Boba for a reason. To the victims of war, this bloodlust wasn't some "peculiar dream", it was a horrific and truly terrible reality. Lucas didn't make all of this up, he looked back at the Korean War, the Vietnam War and many others and saw these same patterns. Order 66 has similarities to Night Of The Long Knives and the Jedi Temple burning visually resembles the burning of the Reichstag. There's also the fact that the name for this order references Executive Order 9066, the order to put all Japanese-American citizens into interment camps for national security. FDR also signed this order shortly after his 3rd term. The hunt for Grievous also mirrors the hunt for Bin Laden and as we all know, Grievous is a red herring and the real enemy is right at home (The Presi- I mean Palpatine). And Palpatine (The President turns Anakin (the youth) into a warmongering killing machine. When Palpatine announces that the Republic will become the Empire, his explanation is to protect national security and destroy this vague idea of "the enemy" but "the enemy" keeps on changing so he can keep his power. This is partly why the prequels got so much hate despite being such great movies. People wanted pure escapism but misunderstood that the originals had politics like this too, Lucas didn't shove it in as much because the context of those films were different. Evil had already won so there's less nuance to put in there and in the prequels, evil is rising so by nature he's gonna have to add more nuance to it. Also the Disney trilogy is bad because they try to abandon this more mature commentary and instead focus on nostalgia worship and the basic "Nazis are bad" as if this is some deep statement. TFA becomes the antithesis to the prequels because of how JJ abandons politics, in his worship of nostalgia, he unintentionally created a movie that was pro-War On T*rror. The New Republic are weak cowards and Leia has return to a mighty past in order to create a strong militia in order to fight a foreign threat that shows up out of nowhere. TFA tells us that the enemy is always foreign and trying to destroy the West, Bush would've loved it if this pile of shit movie came out back in 02 instead of the anti-War On T*rror masterpiece known as AOTC.

Good insights except the prequels were bad because no one could act none of the sfx looked good and no one gave a s h!t. Good ideas can only carry a movie so far.

George Lucas is an adult man with intellectual interests and life experience, who used these things to create something immortal. Modern Star Wars directors are 50 year old teenagers, who wear Star Wars T-Shirts.

Great video, I just wish George Lucas would stop feeling the need to try to explain the Force.

He doesn’t feel a need to explain anything. It’s the people interviewing him who keep asking questions.

Midichlorians are a good addition and he didn't randomly think them up, they were there since the beginning. But he didn't see a way he could mention them in the original trilogy without it feeling unnecessary because Luke wouldn't really need to hear Obi-Wan or Yoda go on about them. When he went to do the prequels, the context was different and it would make sense for Qui-Gon to explain them to Anakin. They work with Lucas' consistent use of the circle motif, we see all sorts of circles within his films. Things like planets, tunnels, pits, ships, etc. all represent different rings/levels of life. All of these different things from the universe to the smallest of microorganisms form circles, it unites us all. One can't exist without the other just like what Obi-Wan said. And Qui-Gon is right when he says "the ability to speak does not make you intelligent" because there's many different types of consciousness, we assume we are the smartest because we can talk but our ability to talk doesn't mean we can fully comprehend how a dog or bacteria or a tree thinks, there's always a bigger fish whether we like it or not.

Explaining the Force is like explaining God... You can try and do it in so many different ways that makes sense to you but the bottom line is nobody truly knows
