This is kind of what I've been saying about modern Star Wars in general. So absolute respect to George for saying it how it is. The Sequel Trilogy just didn't have the same magic that the original 2 trilogies had, they had Star Wars in the name, they just didn't feel like Star Wars and that has always been my criticism about it.
The prequels didn't have that magic either. Honestly ep 7 feels exactly like ep 1 to me. Ep 2 and 8 both are kind of fillers. People should stop defending the prequels, they are as bad as before the sequels released. I watched the phantom menace in cinema when I was 13 and felt nothing.
They won’t feel like Star Wars to you, but the kids who grew up with it will begin to speak out in around 10 years from now. Exact same thing happened with the Sequels.
As a child of the 90s Jar Jar was like that for me. I liked him and even had a Jar Jar plush. Whatever flaws Episodes 1-6 had…they are nothing in comparison to the completely dumpster fire of episodes 7-9 where they undermined major character arcs from the first 6 films and had no cohesive story plan going in.
@@rocktorrocks I was an adult when the prequels came out, so I couldn't get into Jar Jar, but I am and will always be obsessed with the Jedi. Prequels were amazing just because I got to see all these things that I'd read about in books for years. I'm totally biased. The Disney sequels were a big let-down (exception Rogue One of course). It's a shame because the characters were cool, and the actors could have done amazing if they had been given more coherent stories.
I was 13 when I watched Phantom Menace in cinema. Jar Jar was so dumb and goofy in my eyes, even back then. Also felt nothing during that film. For episode 7 people dragged me into the cinema, and same story. Didn't feel a thing.
To be fair, the New Republic is eventually killed off in Legends as well. It just happened a few decades earlier in canon Star Wars. The New Republic never fully politically and economically recovers from the Yuuzhan Vong War in Legends, which was even more costly than the Galactic Civil War. In the disjointed and disorganized post-Yuuzhan Vong War New Republic, it gets taken over be a Jedi-led resurrection of The Empire. This time The Empire is resurrected by Luke's own niece Jaino Solo, and her husband, Wedge Antilles's Chiss-raised Human nephew Jagged Fel. Leia's daughter, Luke's niece, goes on to help create the Jedi Empire - the Fel Dynasty. A Light Side monarchic theocracy. Which eventually gets topped by the resurrected Sith Empire under Darth Krayt. In canon Star Wars it's just the First Order toppling the New Republic a few decades before the Jedi Empire did.
See I think that was my biggest issue going in. If they had shown a little more of the new republic and also lukes jedi academy, I think the sequels would’ve done a lot better. They could’ve destroyed it all in maybe the 8 or 9th movie but with the way it happened, all of lukes hardwork was undid in the timeskip. We didn’t get to see the world and character development to that point. If they were going to make an event like that change his personality we need to see it as it goes down, not just in a flashback. It also would given us a taste of Kylo before he joined the dark side, which is important in his connection with Rey.
I appreciate the creative's desire to control the work, but many artists understand that when they release something, it no longer just belongs to them. The audience takes it into their hearts, interprets it through the prism of their experience, and gives the work special meaning. This is what's happening with the OT.
It may be George’s Star Wars universe; and he may think his films are for 12 year old boys; but the reality of his-and now Disney’s franchise-is that those 12 year olds grow older, and become more dynamic-seeking…. in terms of activity and storylines. Omega will first meet Boba but not realize he works with the Empire. That’s a story in itself!
I was ten in 1977 and didn’t think for a minute that Star Wars was made only for kids. I felt like I was watching a movie for grownups that kids could understand and enjoy. Enough of this Star Wars is for kids nonsense.

There’s no way he was aiming these movies at kids because he would’ve never made enough money to justify The Empire Strikes Back much less any of the others. Very rarely do kids movies make it big with the Harry Potter franchise being the best example mainly because both adults and kids could associate with them and not be dumbed down kids movies. I’ve read the HP books as well and don’t think they’re dumbed down at all for kids.
George realized early that when it comes to fandoms, you just can't win. So, he avoided chasing that dragon. I don't agree with a lot of his choices, but good on him for making them.
I guess I'm still a kid at heart, even though I am 72. I still love George Lucas' Star Wars 1-6 and all his wonderful characters he created, especially and including Jar Jar Binks! The Disney Star Wars variants are enjoyable, especially The Mandalorian and Boba Fett. I just wish people would quit being so argumentative about every little detail.
The Mandolorian was good but the rest is woke garbage (Disneys and the Sequels),they cant write a good story they have bad light saberfights and its supposed to be entertainment not political/activist propaganda they are basically doing everything wrong. I hear you, I’ll be 50 in September. I saw A New Hope in theater in 77 and haven’t missed a Star Wars debut in theater since then. I’m not particularly fond of the sequel trilogy however, I’m also not going on negative tirades b*tching about every little thing in which I don’t agree. I’ve been critical of things that I don’t like, particularly much of the new writing under Disney, but I’ll never be as vitriolic as many of the fans. No matter what happens, I’ll be a Star Wars fan for life and I’ll watch until the day I die. Cheers
Lucas is also a kid at heart. And at brain. His ideas are good but the execution sucks really badly. He is simply a bad writer, a good one would be able to write good dialogue. He should have gotten help from a real writer for the prequels. Disney also has bad writers, except those don't have good ideas either.

George Lucas saying they don't understand the force tells me that he isn't a good writer either. Which he isn't, he's a child, great ideas but bad execution. The idea guy that needs someone to polish the story, which people probably have done for the original trilogy. A writer knows how to write dialogue, but Lucas doesn't. Of course Disney doesn't understand his vision of the force, that's completely normal, maybe even nobody does. The important question is whether they improve his vision or make it worse, unfortunately they did the latter.
Honestly, I don't know why they didn't just adapt the post-Endor EU. The Imperial Remnant, dark Jedi led by Jerec. The new republic led by Mon Mothma. The new Jedi order led by Luke Skywalker on Yavin IV. They could have even thrown the Yuuzhan Vong in there. Kyle Katarn, Mara-Jade. Anakin Solo. Jaina and Jacen. God the legends EU is even better than I remembered. Time to dig out my old books!
Film is a collaborative medium. Many people shaped the OT, for the PT GL seemed to be in more “my way or the highway” mode - at the time, We thought a Marcia Lucas, a Gary Kurtz, a Irwin Kershner would’ve helped the PT.
Prequels are still bad though. Personally I don't know if I would regard them better than the sequels, maybe just marginally. George Lucas just isn't a good writer. He complaining that Disney doesn't understand his vision tells me this, because it's not about them mindreading and copying his story. Also a good writer knows how to write dialogue and Lucas clearly doesn't. These are bad writers arguing over pointless topics. And they are getting tons and tons of attention for it.
I am an OT kid and it's been kind of fun to watch the PT kids grow up and have their own sense of nostalgia for their trilogy. I honestly wonder if there will be any sort of ST kids, because those weren't really films that appealed to kids in the way 1-6 did.

This generation's Star Wars is the Mandoverse. You don't see kids talking about Rey Finn and Poe at all, unlike they do Mando and Grogu. We see this more than ever with social media, the sequels are never trending
I watched the prequels when I was 13, and I just felt nothing. They were bad back then and are still bad now. Noone talked about the films either. 20 years later people dragged me to the cinema for episode 7 and I felt just like with episode 1. Nothing.
Remember everyone His Sequel treatment with Maul and Talon were written up WAY back in the day when the originals were still somewhat fresh. The treatment he wrote up for disney was very different than that old one, and many concepts from that modern treatment were ultimately used The Maul Treatment and The Disney specific Treatment are completely separate treatments, written years apart. Alot of the Maul ideas he had would go on to be used by Dave Filoni throughout Clone wars and Rebels. It's a massive and ongoing misconception that the Maul treatments were the ones "disney threw away"
Deservedly so... nobody wants this, I never thought I'd see the day where I no longer want any new star wars content. From Disney anyway.... The only decent thing they done was Kenobi. Their sequels and spin off shows are terrible. How people praise the mandalorian and ahsoka is beyond me. Only good thing about ahsoka was Hera's ass ffs. I’m one of those 10-year-olds who watched Star Wars back in 1977 and loved it. I don’t remember anyone having anything bad to say about Threepio in the OT but I did hear some grumbling about the Ewoks. As for Kenobi, read the article at The Direct interview in June 2022 of Stuart Beattie by Nathan Johnson as Stuart talks about his script for the Kenobi movie trilogy. It has a lot of the same characters and plot but put together much differently that I seriously doubt anyone would have argued with. It’s a four part interview article starting on 28 June through 6 July 2022. It’s well worth reading.
While Beattie's original ideas aren't as horrible and contrived as the mess we got, his whole trilogy concept is redundant. He thinks the audience needs to have Obi-Wan's sacrifice telegraphed in very obvious way for it to make sense - which takes away the power of the scene for first time viewers, and adds nothing, really. He also misunderstands Vader's dialogue when talking to Luke, and convinced himself that Obi-Wan tried to redeem Anakin (as Vader) after ROTS, which means he doesn't understand the Kenobi character at all, or the dialogue between Kenobi and Vader in ANH.
Without the Internet, I wouldn't know about the C3PO controversy. It wasn't until after the internet I learned of it. I think I saw in the newspaper people were making fun of the Ewoks. I don't remember caring about what people thought about them. Little kid me thought they were cool. I was a little one when the OG trilogy came out. SW is for kids and I still enjoy all of it.
I wonder if the C3P0 controversy didn't come from the prequels, because there that robot was just bad like Jar Jar. The Ewoks were goofy, but at least when they participated in the war they had casualties which made them look more realistic, like a real species. Although Luke's plan to rescue Han and Leia in episode 6 was nonsensical, the film had a lot of good moments later on. Which is something the prequels and sequels both didn't.
Marcia and Howard Kazanjian said the same thing several years ago; they don't get the characters, they don't get the story, and they don't get the Jedi. But MSM and Lucasfilm have been gaslighting us for years that anyone who didn't like was a bigot, or that 'Star Wars fans hate everything new, and then change their mind later'.

I honestly like most Disney Star Wars... except the sequel films. They missed the mark the most. The Favreau/Filoni stuff is uneven in quality but reflects the heart/themes of SW the best, and the Rogue One/Andor stuff departs from it but with such level of quality that it's everything "Star Wars for grown-ups" should be. The sequels though... are just a mess of ideas and bad decisions.
What you people think is high quality I think is ok, what you think is ok I think is garbage. Rogue One and Andor both had a few good moments, but also a lot of problems. For example the first episodes of Andor were just so pointless in my eyes. And the last as well, I don't know what that grandma plot was supposed to be except ridiculous. Mandalorian was ok and had some cool moments, but just travelled around and had meaningless stuff happen to them, it was so forgettable in my opinion that I only remember the first episode and from season 2 the last one because of Luke. And the rest is pure garbage. Kenobi series is garbage, and Ahsoka and Acolyte probably as well, but I didn't watch it. I rather watch something else.
The sequel trilogy was painful for fans, it must have been devastating for George. And I can't see much public appetite for any films based on sequel characters. The Mangold and Filoni films will outgross any sequel spin-offs. So would Rogue Squadron if it ever happens. People actually want those movies, nobody is asking for more of the sequel trilogy.
It’s not how much a movie grosses, it how much it nets that counts. All the nets for the Disney Star Wars movies just comes in under $2 billion net due to low ticket sales after TLJ, cost overruns of reshoots, and complete failure of Solo which netted no money, Lucasfilm’s first movie to not make any money. Hopefully Mangold and Filoni don’t have this problem

Hi Meg, awesome news update, mega excited about Acolyte and very grateful to George for bringing Star Wars to the movies I agree the first 6 were his and the last 3 were not the same and I loved rogue one to Disney have tried to keep Star Wars going and in some shows they have done well but others could have been better looking forward to the future of Star Wars but I do love the movies more, thank you SWM
What surprises me most is all the hate being thrown at Disney as if they held George a gunpoint and forced him to sell Lucasfilm, yet it as he who sold his company for $4 billion dollars and the collective amnesia is in full effect; no one says a peep about him selling to a huge corporation. Go figure. When he sold, he gave up all of his rights to the property because that’s how it works when you sell your creation(s) to someone else. You should have been over it by now.

George Lucas was inspired by serials and shows of his youth. Jar Jar was always comic relief and was likely inspired by Amos & Andy. The character was never meant to be anything deeper than what we saw. George must have thought it would appeal to children the way the Ewoks had. Unfortunately, it was an anachronistic element from a past America was putting behind itself.
I think it’s quite telling that every other Star Wars project has avoided directly connecting itself to the sequel trilogy. If they had to make the move of decannonising it, they would not have to do the same to any other tv show or game. They could then be free to reimagine 7-9.

He could have stipulated in the contract exactly how the sequels should have gone. Disney could have accepted or walked away, but a creator needs to protect his creation. I hope JK Rowling protects her story when she eventually retires and sells.
"We know he enjoyed Kenobi and Rogue One" People involved in those projects *said* he enjoyed it. And I think that has a lot to do with praising the people involved (like John Knoll) rather than what they actually made, and not caring about the feelings of JJ, RJ and Rejwan. But at the end of the day, he's still got Disney stock and he doesn't want to harm the brand or upset fans, hence why he is always diplomatic, even with his criticism.
One could say that everything after the 6 Lucas films is merely a fan film. And that notion is very obvious at times with some productions because they look like a fan film. The detail in production, acting, costume work, themes. It's all stuff that you see in high end fan films.
FYI, if the actress or actor is told to prepare for filming at a future date, the production will become financially responsible for all missed employment opportunities the actress or actor may encounter. The production may officially release the actress or actor from any obligations, removing any employment liability and freeing the performer to take any other work during the announced filming dates. Recently, this became an issue with the Marvel movies. Some performers were employed until officially released from the production. Before the strike, a lawsuit brought this issue to light, and I believe it has since been addressed in the last union agreements.
So here's the thing about George Lucas. He sold the Prof the franchise because he was upset with the negative reaction of the prequels. Then when Disney came to him and asked him to be a consultant on the new trilogy, he said no. So now you want to be mad that Disney doesn't understand the true meaning of the force when they came to you first?
I don't think George's comments at cannes was anything different from what he's always said about Star Wars. The people behind the Sequels understood what Star Wars is,even the Force. The truth is,these individuals did not care about his vision and wanted to as they say,move forward from his foundation. George Lucas has also said Hollywood has a fear of creativity,and that rings very true with all the reboots & reimagining of time honored franchises like Meg's favorite,Alien & Predator,and I sincerely hope she's referring to the first 2 Alien films & Predators respectively,but I digress. I would wager Lucas will not have a positive opinion on the Acolyte,as it is far removed from his vision. He certainly wouldn't approve of this series having a narrative of moral ambiguity,since those who understand true Star Wars,are aware of the clear distinction of good & evil. To make things more distanced from the George formula,the Acolyte characters,along with this "High" Republic,were taken from a novel. I jest when I say this,but I can't wait to hear the explanation on how the High Republic changes to the Republic in one hundred years time. So called fans haven't even questioned this discontinuity,but I'm sure George would've asked Leslie to kindly leave the writers room for that move😂

Why did he side with Bob Iger during the proxy battle then? Nelson Peltz and Jay Rasulo on the board would have pushed for change to go back to George Lucas vision because it is the vision that makes money.
...because most of the money he got from the sale are in stocks. Peltz is no guarantee that Star Wars would be better under his leadership. Instability would only drop the stock prices further, faster. Better the devil you know than the devil you don't know.

Nope. It s because they were bad movies. Bad scenario, bad dialogs, bad actings, bad cgi, etc… As simple as that. And they still are bad movies. I didnt change my mind like some people who pretend to rediscover these movies. The fact is that they are way better than anything star wars nowadays or better than 80% of the actual blockbusters. Still, they are bad movies. HOWEVER, the general story going fromepisode 1 to 6 is magnificient. As a whole big story arc, it s great story telling. Onlythe execution of the prequels are bad.

Episode 3 and 9 both raised the quality again to be still below average. The only coherent story line in the prequels that there's war 24/7 and that Anakin doesn't know what the f he's doing.

The thing about the sequel trilogy that always bugged me was it didn’t have a cohesive plot through all three movies. There are no clues that it’s Palpatine through 2.5 movies. Storylines are setup then discarded. Characters keep shifting importance in the story, or worse increasing in importance when they shouldn’t based on their actions. And like Lucas said, lack of understanding of the force. The force transfer of the lightsabers. It is 3 separate movies that tried to be a trilogy but didn’t have any unified plan or cohesion.
the series have shown me that a 2 plus hour movie will never fully develop a character or plot, going forward movies should only be the “finale” of a series
Honestly all - as I've written before, I'm more than a little apprehensive about The Acolyte. I don't mind a good villan's backstory (E.G. - I loved Cruella and thought Maleficent was decent). I do think that if KK wanted to get away from the Skywalker Saga, she could've - and should've - told Nomi Sunrider's story. This is what, 25,000 years before George's SW era with the strong female character she so desperately wanted. Nomi had some great adventures that I hope to see onscreen someday. Also how about the Tragedy of Shaela Nuur and/or the Tale of Celeste Morne. How about Zayne Carrick? Epic stories abound if she (KK) just used writers that were somewhat passionate about SW. The stories are ALREADY there. As someone who read ALL the EU novels, TO THIS DAY, I still consider it a slap to the face that she said, ". . . there's nothing to draw from."
Tone is a big thing for me. The sequels did not meet that George Lucas tone. It spoke to me like "hey, I'm bastardised version of what came before with flashy cinematography"
Easy as it is to call the audience's reaction on Jar Jar's exceedingly negative, still it is George's responsibility that he didn't have the guts to reveal him the way he intended first. And it's not that fans missed the point that these were movies meant for kids, it's that poor Jake Lloyd's acting was ridiculous to watch, and many actors were not properly directed. But apart from that, it's quite noble on his part to appear so detached. He knows what is his, and puts the sequel in their place without excessive anger. That's wise and much welcome to hear.

I hope we get to see a bit of Georges plan for the sequels, why not as a animated "what if..." show. I would like to hear your thoughts on that Favreau has asked George to "help out" with his move. Is it a posibility that Favreau will do as he said a long time ago, to bring the OT heros back again in his movie, and that he wants George to co-direct maybe
I honestly think they are stuck with the OT heroes. They don't know whether to recast, deep fake or de-age, and Jon & Dave particularly seem worried of doing anything that fans won't like. I get why they want to use their own characters because they feel they have more creative freedom and less baggage from the EU. I've also long suspected that Disney have to pay more royalties to Lucas for using his characters (especially merch) which is why they are sidelined (not because they hate what Lucas made). And perhaps a little hubris that they think they can make new characters just as popular as Lucas'.
George Lucas has already expressed how he felt about the Sequels this was nothing new. He always attended for Star Wars for the pre teen demographics as well. I believe that some of the demographics that watched Star Wars right from the beginning and prequels grow up and wanted Star Wars to grow up with them and when it didn’t there was a lot push back (the writing wasn’t good,too much filler in episodes it’s woke etc) It’s unfortunate but it part fandom that exists but you can still learned something from the stories they are telling now if you chose to.😊
Interesting fact: just before TROS was released, Adam Driver was invited to the Skywalker Ranch. Assuming that Lucas was there, why inviting Driver only? Why ignoring Ridley, Boyega and Isaacs, the new trio of the sequel trilogy? Food for thought, huh? My own theory is that Lucas watched TROS, was devastated that all his characters from the OT died, and in a movie named "The rise of Skywalker", the last two Skywalkers died and the last Palpatine survived and hijacked their name. Only the actor portraying a true descendant of Schmi, Padme, Anakin, Han and Leia was invited to the SR.
As a long term fan since I was a kid in 1977, the first 3 movies are cannon, with perhaps Revenge of the Sith and Rogue One worthy additions. Everything else is fodder as far as I'm concerned.
Whenever someone says "It's for kids." they're using kids as an excuse to make crap. Studio Gibli movies are for kids, but they're tremendous and anyone can enjoy them. Same with Pixar movies and the first 10 years of MCU movies. The MCU is kid friendly, and adults loved it. Making a movie for kids doesn't mean you get to make garbage that no one can criticize.

Yeah completly agree with GL of course, they don’t understand Star Wars, or have tried to hijack it for their own agenda or whims of what they want to do with it; at best the sequels tried to imitate the essence of GL SW when they realised it was falling a bit flat and it fizzed as well. I pretty much stopped after the 2nd sequel as i just didn’t care enough to bother. George left it to Disney but he also left it to his long time colleague KK who he stated explicitly that he trusted to take things forward - and we all saw what happened. The prequels were criticised for lacking the same zest and characters that we really cared about in the originals but looking back they were still George and now its with some good feels that we see Anakin and Obi Wan again in the tv shows that came out.
The version of the movies that won awards needs to be released. I have the laserdisc versions. Lucas criticized the original movies not us. If I can say anything good about the Disney sequels, I will say it now.
I think what was frustrating for me was I like Daisy Ridley, I just didn't like how Rey was written. Kennedy was so determined to overshadow the legacy characters that she crapped the bed. Episode 7 should have focused on Luke Leia and Han while introducing Rey, Finn and Po. The storyline for the sequel trilogy should have progressed so that at the END of episode Nine the reins would have been passed to the younger characters ands the Legacy characters rode off into the sunset. Then any future movies could have focused on Rey , Finn and Po. I think the fans would have been on board if it had been handled that way. But Kennedy decided her identity politics and "Force is Female" bullshit was more important. Her own ego doomed the movies in the minds of most Star Wars fans.
I actually enjoyed where Luke ended up in the sequel trilogy, it made sense to me. But the reason for that enjoyment doesn't exist anymore, which is why I will never defend it
But what does George think of The Mandalorian? Because Filoni has been put in charge of Star Wars moving forward and The Mandalorian series is his vision.
George Lucas really likes to backtrack... about the original Star Wars, when it came out in 1977 he literally said that it was film for young adults. If you watch the 1977 version of Star Wars, it's definitely NOT a movie specifically for children. Then came the toy sales and all of a sudden they were "kids movies". The introduction of Yoda was the first step towards this. This step was small and subtle, and had no negative effect on the movie. But then came the Ewoks and each subsequent movie got more immature and worse after that.
The next movie should be episode 13. Rey should be an old woman… a sith.There should be a rising Jedi order and a rising Empire both fighting for dominance.
It's like George doesn't remember his old words or his actions. Kashik was supposed to be ewok Village but building Kashik proved too extensive and expensive. And who cover senate actions for a kids film... Makes sense because he claims star wars as his, yet it really was Marcia's story.
He didn't say it was JUST for kids, it's just who it was mainly marketed for. The Minions films, Pixar, ect, are the same. Who takes kids to to movies? Adults have to enjoy it too. Cross market, you can't make money from just children.
It’s not so much Disney not using his template for the ST. It’s more Disney subverting the core he established in the OT in favor of “visuals” and “choreography”. Tbh I’m beginning to believe he’s had seller’s remorse for nearly a decade now, and it makes me sad that his baby is a now just a shell of what he wanted it to become.
I felt like Rian Johnson definitely didn't get the Force. I think he had a vision from childhood that everyone should have access to this power without any repercussions.
I felt like rian johnson sole purpose was to destroy the force for his personal pleasure. This guy is a troll and he had this project in mind since a long time ago before he was chosen. One very old video is showing him saying that he would like to do a star wars movie that would divide the audience. I think he has psycological problems. Basic pos.
Johnson is a good director but his thing has always been subverting expectations and playing with tropes. He was absolutely the wrong choice for a Star Wars movie. He made a lousy sequel.
