There's NO reason why T.Hardy's character couldn't be the boomerang throwing kid just mimicking his childhood hero, trying to give others the hope Max gave him. Now that would be quite a twist.
it's a great idea, but I think the mystery of what happened to him has a power to it. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see him do even a small Easter Egg cameo as either definitely Max or maybe Max. But Mel doing a voiceover for a limited animated 'What happened to Max?' series set just after he's last seen heading into the desert would work better than an actual appearance by a 68 year-old Gibson. Even Hugh Jackman is now pushing it to play Wolverine at 55. But Hugh has the advantage of playing a character that doesn't age like normal humans. Mad Max couldn't be half the man he was when we last saw him. As far as live action is concerned it's maybe better left well enough alone.
My idea; Bring Mel back for one last (two or three) big bang mad max film/s Give him a massive send off, ending mad max but, keep the mad max story going Bringing in newer younger actors Kinda like batman and James Bond 😁
@@Crazy-77 sadly, even before Furiosa came out I was pretty sure that this will be Millers last film. I always looked at it as a bonus to Fury Road and one final gift from him to the fans of the postapocalyptic genre and Mad Max. Cherrish and celebrate that moment in the cinema as long as you can...
George Miller is a true original. And the Mad Max world he’s created & the way he shoots them are like nothing else out there. Been watching these amazing films since I was a kid. Hope he keeps making them well into his 90s!
@@paulwoodford1984 Wrong. Like Fury road, it’s Actually mostly practical on location with real stunts, not CGI like most American Super Hero movies. George Miller is known for that.
@@paulwoodford1984 I disagree - the set pieces are largely practical - though I could see why it might seem like a CGI mess from the trailers, because the color palettes - they are vibrant and saturated, which might give everything more of an artificial feel. Just speculating
That break me, but in a good way? Like, every storyteller just wants to express himself and ACTUALLY SEE & HEAR that people relate/conect with you're depest emotions... Man, that's everything
I think Fury Road would have actually worked well for an older Max. The way it ends with him nodding to Furiosa and disappearing, I think it would have been an amazing send off if he was old. Still loved the movie we got..
Miller would rather spit out the name of Harrison Ford(??? lol ffs) then Mel Gibson... Hasn't even pondered a story... like wtf.. he must really hate the guy, or maybe likes to see young men in front of him. LOL
He was signed on to make a Justice League movie years ago, it was cast and everything but it all fell through and we got the shitty Snyderverse instead.@@bigguy130
I genuinely wished I could see a long form interview. Your questions were great, your tone wondrous and respectful. I saw Mad Max 2 when I was 10 on a copied VHS tape back in 83, and fell in love with Kennedy(RIP) Miller films. George is an Australian maestro, and to see your heartfelt respect was a treasure. thanks mate.
I agree, and for George to mention Harrison Ford out of the gate... WTF? .. We are talking about Mel Gibson.. Its like he personally doesn't like the guy so much as to not want to mention his name, nor 'bother' to think about a story where he is still relevant. Miller's interpretation of a Mad Max world is juvenile. Its entertaining as much as getting in 2 min sex. Its a B+ movie at best. Rainy day, boredom type of show. I'd rather have a well thought-out story line with realistic characters and environment. The amount of CGI in this also adds to the bleh factor. If I was a movie studio. I'd give all my money to Christopher Nolan, Zack Snyder, Doug Liman, or Danny Boyle to name some of the best ones.
If Mel can't return to Mad Max, I hope he at least gets to direct a Mad Max film. His gritty directing style would suit the post-apocalyptic world well.
@@comebackguy8892 Some probably could have argued that "Apocalypto" was an indirect white savior film because the Aztecs were depicted in an unflattering light when they sacrificed other indigenous peoples in the movie. Therefore, "You should be grateful that the Spanish came to rescue you from yourselves!" Aztec oppression of neighboring peoples has been overlooked even though it is mentioned in Bernal Diaz's firsthand account of Hernando Cortez's Mexican expedition. Hatred of the Aztecs was so intense that, had Cortez not had his native allies, he probably could not have overthrown the Aztecs with the few men he had. Aztec obsidian weapons were still dangerous against Spanish armor. Firearms helped, but hundreds of Spaniards couldn't kill thousands of Aztecs without more men.
@@AAAA-lt9hq I got the impression that he depicted the Spanish as an force of nature that will turn their lives upside down. Not as saviors. However, regarding our previous conversation, do you remember if Praetorian Jack had a limp? Does Tom Hardy's Max even have one?
I would love to see Mel Gibson return as Max, older and able to watch the world begin to heal, but also watching the violence of humanity struggle against that healing.
Absolutely ! But if Hardy could return one day that would be cool too because, in a "Mad Max" film, having... Mad Max himself seems kind of logic LOL !!!!!! Furiosa is a cool character, but come on, "Mad Max" is "Mad Max" or christ, give the films titles without even the name that would be more honest...
@@StephenDedalus74 Its ridiculous that this guy scoffs on mad max and mel....and also explodes the interceptor!! In fury road.😂😂😂. I really didnt like it all that much tbh and im gonna skip seeing it in the theater just becuz they had the nerve to remove max from the films. Furiosa seems like just another feminist agenda film depicting more agression from women. Vomit really.
@@lassiterdominguez2879 'Furiosa' is a really great film... not what you're thinking at all. I too would love to see Mel Gibson return, but what Tom Burke achieved in 'Furiosa' outshined anything Tom Hardy could ever do and elevated everything the film had going on. For your sake... let go of politics, or at least frustration, and let yourself have some fun. George Miller is a true artist and made an ever better film than 'Fury Road' in my opinion.
@@lassiterdominguez2879 Your last point couldn't be further from the truth. If you think Ozploitation legend George Miller is pushing a "feminist" agenda, you are out of your mind. He literally wrote the script for both Furiosa and Fury Road in the 1990s lol
Wow, what a class act. The time he took to answer questions with that amount of elaboration speaks volumes about him. He seems like he would be a great mentor. I love his sincere reactions to your compliments at the end.
@@adamant5550 Good to hear, but I fear Furiosa's reception at the box office, a lack of money due to Furiosa's under performance, legal wrangling with Warner Bros., and Miller's age may not make the film happen. Mad Max: The Wasteland will most likely be Max's prequel to Fury Road as adapted from the 2015 video game/comic. They probably won't do Nux's arc or they will roll it in with Max's story.
There is a story there, but Miller hasn't gone ahead in time beyond Fury Road. Mad Max: The Wasteland will most likely be a film adaptation of the 2015 Mad Max comic and video game plot.
I don’t know. Personally, I think Tom brought a unique sense of ‘madness’ to Max that Mel lacked in the previous movies. Sure Mel has the cool bravado of a wandering outcast but I think Tom’s feral approach to the character brought a much more vulnerable aspect to the Max that I thought was very good.
George Miller did want him to return when he wrote the first draft of the script, but Mel Gibson said: "no thanks", because this was during the time when he made "Passion" and the success got into his head.
@@doublep1980 Did he ask him again though? Passion came out in 2004, Fury Road in 2015. I'm sure it had more to do with him getting blacklisted in 2006. I'm sure his attitude would have changed.
I can remember a time when I worked in a camera shop in BondinJunction and this charming silver haired gentleman came in for a passport photo. We got into a conversation and he mentioned he was off to Africa. It wasn’t until he paid took his photo and left after a nice thank you that I realised it was George Miller and I kicked myself stupid for the next hour or so. The things I’ve always wanted to discuss with him and to tell him how much his work and him in general have meant to me as a fellow Greek Australian. Oh well maybe in another life I will catch up with him and thank him for it all
I love where this interview goes, Miller always answered and described detailed what was asked and Jake totally appreciated the time and chance to interview Miller. Same here, I was also grownup with Max Max films and amazingly respected Miller for creating a Masterpiece from his first film till now, Thanks 😘👍🏼👍🏼
@@arturius9715 because he's been black listed from Hollywood for antisemitism. The major studios won't allow him to hire Gibson so he makes dumb excuses.
@@arturius9715 Hollywood blacklisted him for saying something silly while being drunk. I doubt Miller cared but movies are expensive and you need to get cash from many sources.
Miller must really not like Mel nowadays, because I completely agree. Max's age is pretty irrelevant in the story, and Mel Gibson could very easily have been swapped out for Hardy and the movie would not have suffered at all. In fact, it might have even improved it, since there is a lot of history there.
@@DarthBuseyYeahhhhh because Mel Gibson at like 65+ is really going to have that energy required like Tom Hardy, the movies pace wouldn't suffer at all... Yeahhhhhhhh... and fairy's are blue and fluffy too. Not that Mel Gibson couldn't be in a Mad Max movie but he'd be better playing as back character in a side story TBH.
@@DarthBusey So what has that got to do with anything? The point was how are you going to make Mel Gibson perform at the same level as Tom Hardy without impacting the pacing of the film?
@@DarthBusey What I'm saying is Mel would be better off probably playing as an aged Mad Max in a spin off movie as like a side character, that way he's not required to go balls to the wall physcially. I don't think doing a Logan like they did with Hugh Jackman works for this kind of Genre, I might be wrong I just don't see how it would work and appeal.
People don't realize just how hard it is to be a good interviewer, between having done your homework to be able to analyze the interviewee's previous work and be able to come up with interesting questions that haven't been asked before and can challenge them, all while keeping a playful and friendly tone. Jake has always been a master at this craft.
It sucks Furiosa underperformed I thought it was a great movie. Really dark and cerebral and not just pure action. I hope he’s still able to make more films in the future one of my favorite series ever
At one point the screenplay for Fury Road focused heavily on Max being an older guy. Not elderly like Indiana Jones, but still old. It was a huge focus early in development and if you look at the storyboards for Fury Road you can see clearly Max is drawn to look old. It was only when Tom Hardy was cast in the role that they shifted focus away from that a bit, although even in the final product there are some small details that seem to be holdovers from before Hardy's casting.
Meh, older mad max? How about start by having Mad Max actually in the film as the lead and not chaining him up doing nothing but playing second fiddle to some girl boss? I'm sure they could find a great actor to play Max. The furiosa films look amazing, but it's meh without Mad Max. It's Mad Maxine! Blah!
I live in Melbourne, and my parents live in Geelong (much of the road footage in the original was filmed in between), I used to live in a suburb of Melbourne called Spotswood where the 'Halls of Justice' are. Many times over the years I've gone out of my way to drive down Mad Max memory lane to see those locations, love it!!
I love doing the Mad Max filming locales tour, I do it at least once a year, takes about 2 full days to see most of them, have you been to the other 2 locations used for the Halls of Justice?
@@Roddrummer In Port Melbourne, if you stand on the corner of Dow and beach st, you can see the building which was used as the exterior of the MFP headquarters ,the plcae that has the Halls of Justice sign, some interior shots were some buildings at the Gasworks park in Port Melbourne.
That was a different George Miller, he was Scottish ...not the same Dr Miller we are talking about. However that director also made the Neverending Story 2 for the record.
Wow, what an absolutely lovely person George is. So friendly and enthusiastic, I could watch him talk for hours. Didn't expect that from an auteur such as himself. I love the Mad Max movies and I can't wait to see this.
Mel Gibson looks fantastic for his age and his acting ability would bring Max back with a bang. Real shame Fury Road wasn't written for an older Mac following Thunderdome. It's obvious that the Gibson controversy at the time when Fury Road came into being was the reason for him not reprising the role as it may have jeopardised the potential reception of the movie and all the hard work.
@@davidb9531 Gibson was hardly a dinosaur when this released and still looks good in movies. I'm of the opinion that George would have naturally concerned himself with Gibson controversy at the time, especially considering he was essentially blacklisted from Hollywood for years!
@@Tube2097you're dead right also Max 4 was planned 2 times before Fury Road. Originally it was 1998 then again in 2005 both times using Gibson and Ledger (feral boy), Miller knew after Gibsons controversial statements he wouldn't be provided funding with Mel.
I still love the theory that Tom Hardy in Fury Road wasn't the real Max, but that he was the feral kid in the previous film grown up. With him having the music box thing that Max gave him and the fact that he hardly talks. I think George shot down that rumor, but I think it works out better that way. Making it where Max is more of a mythic figure. The feral kid looked up to Max, and I think at the end of Fury Road when she asks for his name, he paused before he says Max. He was adopting the name, and taking on that wasteland desperado image
People need to go to the movie theatre and see furiosa to experience that world and support this man, this is just another chapter to the story and the world deserves the final film. Mad max is a life changing movie experience
I think it's safe to say a Mel Gibson led Max movie would crush the box office. For the love of God George, find the story and then convince Mel to do it...
Jake, thank you sooooo much for this amazing interview. I feel as you do regarding Mr. Miller. He is a genius, plain and simple. I have been a fan of his work since I saw the Road Warrior on VHS as a fifteen year old in 1982. Your exuberance for Mr. Miller and his work seemed genuine. Heck, I could listen to Mr. Miller talk about his experiences in regard to filmmaking for hours. Mr. Miller seems like a genuine likable man. Thank you for the question about his medical career in relation to his filmmaking career. The Road Warrior is my favorite film of all time and this series of films is one of my favorites. I can’t wait to see Furiosa. Lastly, I am still bummed that we never got to see his version of Justice League. Very interesting cast choices for this proposed version.
Have you seen the movie yet? It's really good. She's not a girl Mad Max, this is a side story about a plucky underdog just trying to survive. Very interesting direction to take a film.
I'd love to see a Mad Max with Mel Gibson as the village elder "Walker" as he leads them back to the river paradise they left in Thunderdome. That little village of kids almost brings tears to my eyes every time I see it.
What a nice man ! Even after all his phenomenal success the guy is so friendly and humble . The guy's a legend and still so down to Earth and approachable as a person. Humilty is one of the traits of wisdom and he has it !
@@neilpemberton5523 No, he's one of the weird Cult of Mel that don't understand Mel and George don't get on very well and George is quite happy writing new stories with new actors. Beyond that, Grandpa Gibson showing up would be farce.
Once again, Jake takes the gain ! All the great questions and you can tell Georges really appreciated your insightful questions. The first questions about how his experience as a doctor influenced his career as a filmmaker was one I've been wondering for a while and I'm so grateful that 1/ You asked it for me, and 2/ that he gave such a fascinating answer. Also, that last part teared me up. You made that 80 year old man feel seen, and that is probably something he doesn't experience every day, despites his treasure trove of a career. Kudos to you, man !
George Lucas showed the world how to create a lived in universe (galaxy really). But George Miller took it to another level. In Fury Road George Miller had created back stories fro not just the characters but for the vehicles and weapons. The two George's have shown us the way. Let's not nitpick and be assholes. They both have given cinema an amazing opportunity to tell stories in a new way.
You're giving far too much credit to Lucas. His wife deserves a lot of that credit as do the effects crews, specifically John Dykstra. Remove those factors and you get the awful prequels.
I just had a thought, if you've seen the move The Road, there's a scene in there where they come upon an old man (Robert Duvall), in this barren, inhospitable world, how has such an old man survived this far? Then later on around the camp fire, you look into his face, his eyes, there's so much pain, and he's haunted by his memories as he tells the little boy about he had a son of his own once. Such a great cameo from Robert Duvall, and in a way you can extrapolate that character onto a now older Max, looking back on his life, when he had a wife and child, and all the pain and suffering he's endured over the years. Would make a great backdrop for an old Max movie.
Wish i had his health. I died last year at 56. Doctors brought me back but ive had emergency open heart surgery and additional surgery yesterday. Ill be lucky to live much longer. Hope Mel does another Max movie. I saw the road warrior, mad nax beyong thunderdome and fury road with my dad. Last movie me and my dad ever saw together was fury road. I'd like to see Mel Gibson return to the role as Max but I'll be happy to live to see another good movie about max and other characters.
This guy talks like a real Director , going into logistics and efficiency unlike most current ones who let the studio machinery tell them how to get it done .
