Filmmaker George Miller made a huge splash in 1979 with the debut of Mad Max, his B movie revenge tale of “a cop, a driver” who goes, well, mad when some very bad things happen to those he loves most. And from there, a franchise was born which continues to this day with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.
We sat down with Miller on the eve of the Furiosa movie release to discuss his best shots from some of his best movies, as well as a couple from a pair of favorite movies of that he didn’t direct.

Glad to see The Fabelmans getting some love. It was such a heartwarming and genuine movie. One of Spielberg's finest in my opinion. A tragedy that it bombed. I always loved that ending shot, so I'm thrilled to see it recognised by the great George Miller!

Spielberg is one of the masters, but when I think of that last scene I think of Tony Kushner. Something about that idea, makes me think Tony Kushner came up with it. not Spielberg.

I love how Mad Max became post-apocalyptic out of budget constraints, which then gave birth to an entirely unique genre of fiction. One of my favorite examples of making the most of what you've got.

I watched the first Mad Max at a drive in . It captured a wide open land with odd ball types used to the desert. The crazed chopper pilot springing from the dust. They had something that was lost in the later movies. Now thrilled to have my own xb Ford. The sound of that turbo screaming is a rev head joy!

My favorite shot of George Miller is the ending of Lorenzo's Oil. Lorenzo's real-life story was still ongoing, so Miller took the lastest development by the time of the recording, i.e. his father goes to Italy, as an excuse to show the beautiful painted ceiling of a Roman church, and as the camera zooms in, you read what happened to his family during post-production. I just find it absolutely ingenious!

Miller and Chris Noonan have historically fought a lot about who "really" directed Babe, as they both take credit. Miller at least did a HUGE amount of preproduction on Babe and was an involved producer, but Noonan has made it clear that it's insulting to insinuate that Miller was the real director with all the work he put in. Miller, admittedly, is arguably my favorite director, but this credit stealing always looks bad on him, and it isn't great that this channel fed into it.
