It is refreshing to see that he has not been coopted by some major corporate interest otherwise the force of that intellect would be quickly neutered and all but lost to humanity.

I had 2 moments recently where i was flabbergasted at the incredible lack of knowledge around me.... I was on a livestream and talking about pesticides and climate change. Not a single person on the livestream saw any correlation between those 2 things, at all. I was at work at a gas station and i talked about the importance of ending the usage of fossil fuels. I had an 80 yr old lady ask me "well, whats more important, your job or the planet?" She was shocked when i said "the planet" So much work to reverse those attitudes...

George, with planned grazing even more CO2 can be sequestered than on ungrazed grassland. The destruction of the atmosphere and environment does not happen from family farms but from CAFOs (Confined animal feeding operations) and the agribusiness practices and mindset.

@charliebrandt2263
@charliebrandt2263 3 года назад
The soil is our best way to sequester CO2 . Even better than forest, Importantly, we have destroyed almost half the soil of our planet since the industrial revolution through desertification, Agribusiness farming in recent years and poverty. The monoculture deserts sustained with chemicals and bio poisons have reduced the soil to CO2 emitters by reducing it to dust! and worse not only the decimation of insect species we depend on to pollinate crops but the poisoning of our offshore waters creating dead zones is the cost. The grip of agribusiness on farming has to change. There are already projects around the world devoted to land regeneration, and the results are there to see, desert turned to fertile land in as little as 5 years. But without a concerted effort at scale the task is impossible

Consumer behavior drives production. Simply going vegan solves 90% of these problems according to standard agricultural science, climate science, and economics.
@spinkyl9559
@spinkyl9559 5 лет назад
Simply going vegan without understanding that 'standard agricultural science' is bought and paid for by chemical corporations would be disastrous. Sure, if you want to support Monsanto and Bill Gates' fake green revolution which is really a total commodification of nature for capitalism, then just demand the banning of animal farming without thinking about what that really means. Industrial chemical agriculture causes more ecosystem destruction than any other system we use. We have to stop using industrial chemicals, pesticides and synthetic fertilizers and tillage of land, and start using regenerative practices that involve regenerating living ecosystems to share food from. This has been researched and is being promoted by farmers following the practices, so why isn't George the Saint talking about this? Why is he simply advocating a position that strengthens the position of chemical corporations like Monsanto? We cannot continue farming the way it is now, the standard position is a non sustainable system that is destroying living ecosystems. Instead of burning and chemicalizing Brazil and the Amazon, we should be learning how to share the foods created within living ecosystems, as many are doing but not being promoted by big names like George or Greta. There are better ways. Ask George to read the work of Vandana Shiva and many others. We cannot continue with industrial chemical agriculture, this is causing the 6th extinction more than anything else. Please wake the hell up George.

@@spinkyl9559 You seem unaware that 90% of soy and 50% of grains are fed to livestock to produce meat. If meat production ended The majority of agricultural land can be returned to wilderness and everyone can easily be fed with organic farming. The only reason for GMO, agrochemicals, etc is the meat industry demand for massive amounts of animal feed (soy, grains, etc) to be grown at very high yield/acre.
@sarahcollins190
@sarahcollins190 5 лет назад
@@mrknesiah @Spink L is right. What you don't seem to understand is that only a small fraction of the land we use for agriculture is suitable for growing crops, the rest is either too Rocky, too steep, to dry etc. Grass fed animals raised in holistic grazing pattern which mimic the grazing patterns of the vast rument herds that once covered the African, American, Asian and European savannhs actually improve the soil and sequester carbon, increasing water stored in the soil, which then increases the growth of grasses and forbes which then restores land that was lost hundreds and maybe even thousands of years ago to desert. George Monbiot calls for rewilding, which is fantastic, but what he doesn't seem to realise is that introducing large ruminates such as bison and buffalo without the pack predator such as wolves and lions which cause these animals to bunch tightly in herds and constantly keep on the move will degrade the land just as fast as current set stocking grazing practices. Monbiot has admitted that bringing back the wolf to the UK is not likely to be feasible but if the try and rewild without them it will be an utter disaster. Alan Savory, Gabe Brown, Charles Massy are just a few of the farmers, scientist and ecologist who are working with natural system to bring us back from the brink of climate disaster and livestock are an essential component of this. It's not the cow, it's how they are managed that is the problem.

@spinkyl9559
@spinkyl9559 5 лет назад
George, answer this: if livestock keeping is banned, how exactly are plant foods to be grown? Do you support the chemical industrial agriculture system, which is equally as destructive of living ecosystems as industrial livestock systems? The facts you have yet to research from relevant sources are on regenerative agroecology. You simply cannot develop regenerative agroecology without animals on the land. Animal manures are the key to nutrient flows and soil microbiology health. Chemicals and synthetic fertilizers are the cause of massive environmental damage, most misunderstood being the SOIL MICROBIOLOGY. We NEED animals on regenerative farms to keep soil ecosystems as the base of living ecosystems alive. There is no entire farm ecosystem without animals.
@mrknesiah
@mrknesiah 5 лет назад
You're not thinking about this clearly. Livestock displaces natural wildlife and is the only reason why chemical fertilizer and GMO high yield seeds and all the other horrors of monocrop agriculture are required. A return to crop rotation and other traditional methods will reduce yeild per acre but if animal feed isnt required then there would be sufficient acres to feed 20 Billion humans. If meat were banned, most agricultural land can simply be restored to carbon sequestering wilderness.
@margaretdent1312
@margaretdent1312 5 лет назад
@@mrknesiah you need to rethink this. Animals are part of the crop rotation system- the fallow period is grass for animals. Vegans cannot live sustainably in UK- Stop buying imported vegetables and beans. Throughout Europe humans have lived in an ecobalance until the last 150 years when chemicals usage and advances in our living standards have outstripped our ability to support ourselves. I agree that GMO and Roundup are unsustainable and factory farming also. We will have to go back to living standards of pre industrial revolution to be sustainable.
@Jimmy4video
@Jimmy4video 5 лет назад
@@margaretdent1312 the UK population cannot be supported by UK agriculture as it stands. Animal feed imports represent a larger area of source land than vegitable imports. Vastly cutting down animal farming would free up enough land to feed the UK with native crops. Most animal feed in the UK comes from Argentina. The idea that UK farm animals are supported entirely by the land they inhabit is entirely false.
@margaretdent1312
@margaretdent1312 5 лет назад
@@Jimmy4video Not disputing this, however, I live in the Pennine Dales and low input livestock farming supports our community, no other crops will grow here and turning our AONB into a wilderness will deprive the community of its tourist income- causing more unemployment. We have the highest proportion of wading birds in the country, this is a vibrant and sustainable ecology.
@Jimmy4video
@Jimmy4video 5 лет назад
@@margaretdent1312 it's a lot to hit farmers with and no doubt there are cases that do favour farm animals but a fair start would be to say, no imports of animal feed. Then start cutting into grain and soya crops grown just to feed livestock. If none of that affects the animals on a farm then those animals are in equilibrium with their environment and that's probably sustainable.

We can( and need to) use the world’s ICE vehicles to suck CO2 out of the atmosphere by running them on ‘Carbon Negative Algea Bio Fuel’,the Internal Combustion Engine( ICE)was responsible for much of the atmospheric CO2 due to them running on Carbon ‘Positive’( or Carbon based) fuel. Now if those same Engines were run on a Carbon Sequestering Bio Fuel such as Algea Bio Fuel is grown using waste watert so saving lots of energy that is currently used in energy intensive waste water treatment. Plus from every gallon of Algea Bio Fuel, 10 pounds of nutrient rich( high in Omega 3 etc) Carbon residue is produced and permanently removed from the atmosphere. Photo Bio Reactors( PBR) can grow Algea Vertically in glass tubes and are easy, cheap and quick to build. It is possible to roll out PBR across the country in every village, town, neighbourhood and city in just a few years, we MUST make this transition asap. Electric Vehicles( EV) are not the answer as we don’t have the time to build billions of new vehicles( of whatever type) also the vast amount of resources and energy to make them could finish us off. Also EV are not Sustainable as they rely on non renewable Lithium, Cobalt, Manganese etc which is very destructive when mined as they use strip/open cast mining and uses large amounts of water in evaporation ‘pools’in Arid Regions. Also EV only cause emissions( in their manufacture from Mines, to Road), they can’t be used to sequester CO2 as the ICE could, and seeing as roads take up a lot land we NEED to utilise that land as a Carbon sink. Carbon Negative Algea Fuel would mean in effect we would be using the world’s ICE’s as Carbon Capturing machines. Another positive to rolling out PBR’s is it would create millions of new local Green jobs and bring £millions to communities and regional economies, and could fund the transition to a Sustainable future. So Algea Bio Fuel is a viable, positive low tech solution, in every aspect its a winner!.

"Decoupling" is designed as a salve for the consciences of the rich and powerful. Much decoupling involves an horrific virtue signalling, where negative feedback consequences are overlooked, particularly by zealous governments and authorities. Take the plans to exponentially extend Ultra Low Emmission Zones in major cities. This will necessitate the effective crushing of functional vehicles. What is this polluting, energy-wasting and entirely unnecessary recycling meant to bring. Certainly more poverty, and more pollution via the necessary replacement of older vehicles, the plundering of earth's resource to produce problematic batteries with yet unknown pollution potential. "Re-using" is far better for the environment. Authoritarian bureaucrats and career politicians are jumping on a supposed decoupling model that isn't one at all. They plan to bring our cities to a virtual standstill. I've done my bit for decoupling by not having children. But our political and high-level bureaucratic "Royalty" are sure to have wonderful, privately educated children who will rule the world wisely? It's still Eugenics of a sort, certainly hubris and arrogance that informs public policy and Realpolitik.

Very knowledgable conversation and very realistic to a point. The great threat to the planet is HUMAN OVER POPULATION. Of course, the battle against planned parenthood and women's education is at the forefront but there is NOTHING that is wrong with climate and environmental breakdown that can't be blamed on the human population nor is anyone willing to discuss that problem to the a degree that will make people stop having children for the sake of humanity and species that support them.
@mrjohnnytoobad
@mrjohnnytoobad 5 лет назад
there is PLENTY wrong with ‘environmental breakdown’ that can't be (conveniently) blamed on human population. Did you actually listen to what he said about rampant, raging capitalism? Larger population levels means more consumers, a situation capitalists absolutely encourage, but over-consumption is the root cause of the current emergency. I agree the population issues doesn't need addressing, but fairer wealth distribution (from Global North and West to the South and East) will lead to smaller families. Please review your lazy blame-game and check your facts and - ‘for the sake of humanity’. Thank you.

Hmmm, I think he would stuggle to connect any dots. If I was so inclined. I would love to see this bloke up against Jordan Peterson in a debate. Or Elmo!

Climate hoaxers are wrong about the future. Higher CO2 greens the planet.

@@rollling7523 The whole subject is a joke. Thousands of years on and we still have a herd mentality. People are like farming sheep. If only these morons on both sides would stop exhaling or emitting methane from their arses it would be a beautiful world.

Rollling Does the Pacific garbage patch green the planet? Burning the forest? Pouring billions of tons of concrete? Animal agriculture?

Rollling. Are you sure they are “hoaxers”? Could it be possible that people are just wrong, or misguided? Or maybe they are right? Or maybe somewhere in between?

@@dystopiaeatsmoney Indeed, activists are misguided, they are believers . There have been several doomsday cults before this one. I remember the Club of Rome in the seventies, with lots of scientists, and they were sure we would run out of resources in 10 years. Or the scientist who wrote " The Population Bomb ' and he was sure we would all starve before 2000. They all made big money on their stories. Same now, its a scam.

The fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and it was allowed to scorch people with fire. They were scorched by the fierce heat, and they cursed the name of God who had power over these plagues. They did not repent and give him glory. There will be great earthquakes, and in various places famines and pestilences. And there will be terrors and great signs from heaven.“And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves,this has all been foretold thousands of years ago there's no way you can stop it
