I came across a channel boat person this summer. He was a very pleasant and extremely intelligent, capable, and hardworking young Iranian man- highly qualified and experienced industrial electrical engineer. He told me he had crossed the channel with just a handful of others by themselves - no trafficers/smugglers involved which was interesting. He also explained to me that the vast majority of the Iranian people, especially the young, were against the murderous islamic dictatorship of the Islamic clergy which are holding the people hostage, but since after so many attempts and so much sacrifices the people haven't been able to get rid of the dictatorship yet, a lot of them were beginning to give up and were leaving the country- a lot them desperately so since already in trouble with the regime. He said people had also had a lot of hope that the west would support them in their struggle, but had come to the conclusion that the west is only interested in how much financial benefit was there for them in dealing with a dictatorship as opposed to the ideals of freedom and democracy.

No-one in their right mind would support withdrawing the UK from the European Court of Human Rights. Can you honestly trust the Tories to protect and respect your rights based on everything they've done in the last 13 years?

I liked the way Mercer slumped in his seat as George pronounced 'a government of sadists'.

Austerity was a sadists choice indeed. Especially when it wasn't mandated, it was a choice, and other countries in similar position after 2008 didn't take that route. The torries chose to make everyone and the entire out put of the country worse off as soon as they got into power. Its been 15 years of sadistic treatment of every public service in the country.

Well! This was the best entertainment I've had all week!! Watching George Monbiot in full flow, (Bless his heart❤️ ) skewer this Tory MP for the inhuman policies of his party was truly gratifying. I think he was trying to crawl under the table towards the end.

"Hard working, ordinary people" is a phrase the Tories use all the time, but we know they couldn't give a stuff about hard working, ordinary people. One interesting thing here: I'm using the word 'stuff' because I'd originally put four asterisks, to stand in for a certain word we're rightly not allowed to use, but guess what? RU-vid won't let me - it turned it into two asterisks and when I tried to add another two, it wouldn't allow me to post the message. It's incredible - even asterisks are censored now.

My dream is that the Tories lose so badly that the SNP become the party of the opposition. Then the Labour Party introduces proportional representation to ensure that the Tories do not gain power again until long after I'm dead.

The failure of the Rwanda scheme will lead to an exit from the ECHR. That was always the plan.

What has happened to humanity? That we cant help people be free of traumatic circumstances. I applauded George monbiot for telling it like it is!!!

As I understand it the UK government is paying Rwanda £140m to take just 100 migrants (£1.4m per migrant), none of whom have been taken so far and the total cost of the plan will be £290m. Also Rwanda has the right to reject any it doesn't want and the right to send (an unspecified number of) Rwandans to the UK. What's the point? What really is the point?

What is demonstrably notable. Was Mercers face when George was delivering his speech. Mercer wouldn't even look at Monbiot. Considering Mercer is an ex British army officer, you'd expect better. They're taught to look people in the eye while conversing, even if the conversation is clearly emotionally charged. It promotes confidence and a feeling of empathy. I saw non except anger toward George Monbiot.

I once respected Jonny Mercer. I remember listening to an interview with him when he first became an MP. He literally stated something like "it makes me sick that when I see people I respect going to parliament and then when I see them months or years later they have sacrificed all their morals and values just to fit the party line or fill their pockets." We all have to take responsibility for refugees. That's the current situation. War, famine, persecution etc is never going to stop. Just can't op out. Time everyone grow up and realised that.

If you watch this, you can see there are a few people not applauding Monbiot, and they are pretty much all the over 65’s. Those are the people that are sure to turn out on election day and most likely vote Tory again. It’s important we all get out, and make sure all of our colleagues, family and friends do the same, and that they know about tactical voting too.

At 40 000 crossings a year and a limit of 100 that can be sent to Rwanda there is no deterrent. Even if you were the unlucky one in four hundred to be sent you could misbehave and be sent back to the UK. Another Tory distraction is to refer to 8m a day on hotel bills - per head this must be than less 100 a day. At 300m a year Rwanda seems rather costly. Are the Tory ministers just plain thick

If the leaders do not fix climate change, the number of people trying to reach the UK will massively increase in the coming decades. Not through their choice, but through survival necessity. The fact the government in the last few decades have done soooo little to avert global climate disaster is a primary cause of immigration.

The problem i have we are accepting too many migrants, the UK is suffering due to lack of infrastructure, Europe is on the ropes due to mass migration.... every country has to keep migration down to sensible figures...

Judging by the statistics available, net migration in the year to June 2023 was 672,000, the number of people arriving by boat to claim asylum is alleged to be in the region of 6000. So less than 1% of total immigration. How exactly is this policy possible going to make a significant difference to the people arriving by boat or the total onward migration. Even if you are sympathetic to the government strategy, the maths don't add up in numbers or people or pounds

All of this concern about what is a relatively small number of asylum seekers is going to pale into insignificance once there are millions of people on the move because of climate change.
