Well...somehow...we got 7 movies each getting progressively more wacky. That deserves some kind of notice. And they were R so it wasn’t even pandering to the teen crowd
Albert Wesker 1969 They should have. They don’t even focus on zombies in most of the films. Resident Evil 7 isn’t even about zombies. Not a single undead. It instead focuses on some crazy cannibal family. There are these creatures that echo zombies that attack you behind every door.
The scene where that guy gets his vocal cords ripped out makes my stomach turn every single time. I'm not the kind of person to get grossed out by gore, but that makes me not want to watch the third movie. That, to me is the sign that George Romero is the king of zombies.
I am from Monroeville, sadly I think the only thing left in the mall from the movie is a small bridge over a pond. They even had to petition to keep it a few years ago! Also there is a Zombie Walk every year at the mall, and they often turn one of the empty stores into a little museum around that time.
jds433 my dad saw dawn of the dead at the theatre there when it came out and a couple of his cousins were zombies in the movie. I would go there all the time when I visit my grandparents throughout my childhood
I'd also argue the female lead in Dawn was not a throw away character. She starts weak and grows, that's her arc. She's useless to the others because she's pregnant and can't be trusted to handle anything but she learns how to shoot and even learns to fly the helicopter in case something happened to Flyboy. Hell, she's the reason they survive in the end!
I'm going outta box saying this, but I'd say that *_Day of the Dead_* may be my personal favorite out of the original Dead Trilogy (or entire series). I enjoy the underground military-science facility and the crew's futile attempt to find a cure. I also love how it has an actual human antagonist in Captain Rhodes, he feels like an actual threat to the protagonists more than the zombies themselves. It also shows how living isolated during a zombie apocalypse could cause severe mental deterioration. And the amazing music score by John Harrison (the same guy who'd go on to direct the _Dune_ miniseries in 2002).
"If you have footage of your friends getting killed, how could you be so insensitive to put music in it?" Oddly enough, James didn't realize that realistically describes RU-vidrs in the modern day.
dude have you been outside lately, gender neutral propaganda topped with pansy political correct brain washing . i would say hell is full and we are now in the zombie apocalypse
and you have to learn reading because he said ONE of the best directors of all time. and i gree, even after watching stuff from kubrick, hitchcock, spielberg, lynch, fincher and what not. also, even if he says that it's his favorite director. so what? you can't compare romero's dawn to the dead to, let's say, spielberg's duel/jaws or hitchcocks psycho/the birds. even in the horror genre there is too much difference in style. if you love zombieflicks, romero is your fav director. simple as that!
I actually loved the soundtrack for Day of The Dead. Had one of the best antagonists and Bub is my favorite zombie, in one of my favorite zombie movies.
did you know that in the Japanese version of Dawn of the Dead, they had to put an explanation in the film to explain the cause of the zombie virus. it turns out that a planet outside our solar system exploded and the rays from the explosion hit earth and that is what caused the undead to rise.
Day of the Dead is one of my favorite films, simply for Bub. I damn near shed a tear over a flesh eater. Partly due to Frankenstein's character set up of him, his eccentricity as an actor really made Bub come alive on his own, no pun intended.
George Romero’s final novel “The Living Dead” shows what he wanted to do for Day of the Dead. The book weaves all the movies together in a single timeline and it is a masterpiece. It really is the final zombie story
@@cardiacade Yeah man it's a great line and the actor that played Capt Rhodes (cant remember the name off the top of my head) Ad-Libbed the line. Fantastic 😅
U do realise that any 1 can have a star as long as they pay for it and pay for the up keep , it not a sign of talent getting 1, u don't get offered a star , u or someone on ur behalf has to apply for it
I have to respectfully disagree with your comment about the female characters in this series being badly written. If I may offer my humble defense, I think Romero's female characters are one of the most interesting aspects of his films. Barbra always gets criticized for going crazy and being useless, but I personally agree with Judith O'Dea's take on it: she's just responding in the way that most people probably really would react in that situation. In the case of Fran, she's pregnant, and as the film goes on she has to stand up for herself to show the guys that she isn't just their "den mother." Note how they accept FlyBoy despite his incompetence but leave her for household tasks. Then there's Sarah, who's the hero of the film and stands her ground against Capt Rhodes throughout. Yeah, Fran does seem a bit useless in that particular situation, but I wouldn't say that scene represents her or the female characters of the Dead series overall.
Sarah and Remake Barbara are my favorite characters from this series. One of my favorite parts of Day is when she gets slapped in the face by a hysterical Miguel and she just gives him a cold stare before he crumbles in despair. It's like the exact opposite of the Night scene where Ben slaps Barbara for freaking out in classic movie female tradition. I honestly think it might've been an intentional call back.
They were just standing there filming their friends fighting for their lives in Diary of the Dead, lol, who does that? Even for a zombie film it was ridiculous and unrealistic.
Not really. Watch how modern people are as far as filming things with their -Smart- phones and then take into consideration how obsessed those same people are with uploading that content to their -Social- media accounts so they can get Twitter -famous.- I would guess that was the idea of having them nonchalantly filming like that. Not sure why James and so many people don't understand that. Romero always had relevant social commentary in his films to remind people that we real-world humans are far worse monsters then the zombies in his films.
I thought it was sad that Romero, who is considered a pioneer in the genre, made a "found footage" movie that was just trendy at the time and totally unoriginal.
Overuse of screens can lead to loss in tissue volume in the grey matter area of our brains (the front lobe). This is the processing area of the brain responsible for prioritising and planning. Another affected area is the insula, the core circuit for mediating compassion and empathy for others. By giving children smartphones at an early age and allowing them an almost uncontrolled access society is creating an army of the living dead, without the ability to feel empathy or plan for the future. And so I believe there are teenagers today capable of emotionelessly filming their friends fighting for their lives or dying . I belive there are more of them than you think.
Light Yagami I agree, but sometimes I wanted to yell, “FUCKING MOVE GODDAMMIT!” As far as the argument, I was referring to “peak zombie”, as in zombies being fucking everywhere. But I hope you are right. 👍
The zombie movie sub genre is well known to go through peaks and lows in terms of relative quality and popularity that have been on going since White Zombie (1932). However, the sub genre has probably become most popular in the mainstream since Resident Evil and 28 Days Later (both 2002) than it ever has before including when I call the "Golden Age" of the late 60's to the mid 80's! Peace...
How about they doing something they’ve never tried before...a zombie movie where people actually do things right and stopped acting stupid and survived.
Dawn of the Dead is my favorite, the original. My favorite character is homie. Guy is about to commit suicide and then just says "fuck it!" and proceeds with just one bullet to fight off the zombies and gets to the helicopter. Love that scene so much!
in the original plot for the movie he was actually going to pull the trigger on himself, and the pregnant woman was going to kill herself with the blades of the helicopter.
Fatsmcgee andhisretards3 i love it, making apocalypse style horror movies doesn’t always have to be depressing, i like when movies don’t take themselves too seriously and just show the characters having fun and showing their character traits.
The zombies in Day of the Dead, gritty and gory as hell. The zombie hordes at the end, pretty awesome. Dawn of the Dead, great adventure in a zombie filled world.
Whew. I'm even more grateful that I stopped watching these films after Day of the Dead. Romero's return to the franchise looks abysmal. Great reviews James.
yup. I look back at all the movies and cartoons I grew up with in the 80s and early 90s...how ingrained they have become in my life. I look at monster madness and Cinemassacre with the same fondness.
sotijas I found out about Angry Videogame Nerd in 2008. I loved the reviews so much, I made a RU-vid account and subscribed. Been a huge fan ever since.
Day of the Dead, Reanimator, The Return of the Living Dead... what an year! I always found Day the darkest, the most iring and disturbing zombie movie ever. I've been always a fan of this flick. Also, I just love how Romero turns the tables by making humans monsters to the point that when Bub becomes more human he kills for revenge, not feeding instinct. Which, makes him an assassin. Not to mention the gore!
I got to see Day at a midnight showing in early 86... I loved it from the start and the soundtrack by John Harrison (Creepshow composer and Tales From The Darkside as well) is unappreciated and amazing.
Kinda wish you talked some about the remakes. Like how Dawn's 90's remake kinda fixes what few flaws was in the original such as making Barbra not a throwaway character. Though I understand this purely about the Romero ones.
Yeah I mean night, but I feel Dawn is fine as well, Its not as good because it looses a lot of the atmosphere; but I don't care about how zombies move, thy are fictional and their rules can be whatever is needed to try an tell an effective story. Both imo are FAR superior to Night 3D.
The best trilogies are the ones where you can't decide which is best. Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings, Evil Dead, and Romero's Trilogy of the Dead!
Damn, Diary Of The Dead seems just plain awful. Probably my absolute least favorite kind of movies are ones like that which feel like they're having an identity crisis.
@@markganus1085 I thought Land of the Dead (2005) wasn't half bad, not to mention Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland, but those are both satires, even though they're also genuine zombie flicks.
I still cannot believe you got the late Great George A. Romero to cameo in your Living Dead one. That said, considering the nature of his films, to anyone who has access to his body, shoot it in the head. You never know.
Night of the Living Dead (1968) - CLASSIC Dawn of the Dead (1978) - CLASSIC Day of the Dead (1985) - CLASSIC Night of the Living Dead (1990) - CLASSIC Dawn of the Dead (2004) - AWESOME Land of the Dead (2005) - GOOD Diary of the Dead (2008) - 😐 Day of the Dead (2008) - 🤢 Survival of the Dead (2009) - 🤮
Pete Olivarez because The Return of the Living Dead franchise is not directly linked to Romero’s Living Dead franchise but I absolutely love The Return of the Living Dead, is one of the most entertaining horror movies of all but it doesn’t feature your typical zombie conceived by Romero. Anyway ... brains ! 🧟♂️ 🧠
Her dad must have did some weird satanic ritual abuse on her. He probably busted that ass right out lol then it turned her into a sick monster as well. Thats why these sick fucking demons need to be straight up lynched. They fear us, rightfully so.
Joe Pilato (who plays Rhodes in Day of the Dead) also turns up near the start of Dawn of the Dead as a police officer. I don't know if its the same character or if Romero just reused the same actor.
@@bradpaton3927 They were filmed YEARS apart but the zombie apocalypse must've really carried on in fits and starts. Like, 1978 being a particularly bad year, but some progress made for humanity to survive through to 1985, in the early months of which everything went quickly to shit again. You have to see the continuity, such as it is, as all the films being set at roughly the same time, probably in order. The later post-2000 ones featured lots of technology that wasn't available "yesterday" in 1969 or whatever, but they are just films after all. There's a loose continuity, some characters are given one, a bit, even if it doesn't make sense in an utterly concrete scheme. But films don't have to be like that, because they're written for normal people to enjoy, not obsessive rule-followers!
I love George Romero zombies movies. My favorites 1. Day of the Day 2. Dawn of the Dead 3.Night of the Living Dead 4.Diary of the Dead 5.Survival of the Dead 6. Land of the Dead I love Day of the Day soundtrack.
Dawn of the Dead 1978 is still my favorite Zombie movie, well besides Shaun of the Dead but consider that more a comedy, but definitely an elite Zombie movie in it's own right. Also Day of the Dead is definitely under appreciated, definitely a top tier Zombie movie, too bad that was his pique. After that Romero films went down hill. RIP to the man but definitely wish he had a chance to make a high budget Zombie movie before he died. Last movies he made were awful made for TV like movies.
"the women in these movies are always flat, badly written characters" REALISTICALLY written. The vast majority of women aren't gonna be anything close to Ellen Ripley or Sarah Connor.
I love the soundtrack of Day of the Dead, such great guitar solos and possibly the best zombie eating death of all time haha. Dawn for the win though, masterpiece.
Sarge is a reoccurring character in 3 "Of the Dead" films. Land of the Dead, Diary and Survival. He's Sergeant Bruebaker in Land of the Dead. Same Character.
I always loved “Day of The Dead”. It had a creepy atmosphere and interesting story line. I loved the “head pull” gag and I couldn’t figure out how they pulled it off. And C’mon who doesn’t want to be bff’s with Bub?
...and why did they eat only a small portion of their victim instead of completely consuming them so they couldn't become a zombie? Is that the way they reproduce..ish..?
Yeah that has always bothered me. You see zombies eating people limb from limb yet you see armies of mostly whole zombies with a little damage that keeps them mobile
Faktea Lalfakzuala I have a theory. The corpse their eating gets cold before they finish causing them to move on and what's left reanimates if there is enough brain matter and also some people get away with a bite or are mauled then die later and reanimate.
The children zombies that attack Peter actress (Ken Foree) at the airport are the niece and nephew of Tom Savini! Also yes Barbra (Night) and Fran (Dawn) were depicted as weak. However Romero regretted doing that and that's why Sarah (Day) was written as a strong character. I took a trip to Monroeville for Living Dead Weekend 2018 it was Dawn's 40th anniversary. Yes the mall is more modern but if you're a fanatic there's enough left to let you know where you are! The entire cast of Dawn are great and very friendly people.
i always thought Rhodes, like Cooper in Night, got a bad rap. they scientists Were keeping the zombies in the room next to the soldier's, they were making the soldiers risk themselves by rounding up and corralling the zombies, and all for tests that were not producing nay results. In a way Rhodes was sticking up for his men, albeit it threatening execution could be considered a touch excessive. In the end, Rhodes was right, as the survivors abandoned the base, "shoot the mothers int he heads" and go live out their days on a beach. Similar to how Cooper in NOTLD was right that the cellar did turn out to be the safest spot in the house.
My favorite period Tarman is the best Zombie followed by Bub Trash Linnea Quigley dancing in the Graveyard excellnt soundtrack great chemistry with the actors gore & comedy its perfect
The best part about down of the dead is the way during other movies you say to yourself "if i was in that situation id do...", in dotd they act realistically, so you don't really have any "what i would do moments". Its rare in films so when you see it, it definitely gets you more invested.
I own two German limited edition steelbooks of Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead with rediculously long running times (well Dawn anyway!). Dawn runs at 155 mins and Day runs at 102. Both Steelbooks have linticular covers and are well worth finding! Peace...
G A Romero... The man that scared the crap out of me in the early 80s. But dawn... I tend to like the longest version. I'm 49. Still enjoy his movies and can watch for days. But Day of the Dead is my favourite
