A new instructional drumming video from pop/Gospel/R&B/rock drumming sensation George "Spanky" McCurdy (drummer for Lady Gaga, Diddy, Kanye West, Jill Scott, Justin Timberlake, and Timbaland).
Spanky's playing has long been admired by awestruck drumming fans, and now he divulges his secrets on this new video!
Off Time/On Time explains and demonstrates a wealth of concepts, licks, and secrets to taking your playing to an entirely new level. One of the main topics covered on the DVD is the ability to play creative grooves and fills that are extremely creative and can sound "off time." Spanky performs many examples, from basic to very advanced, where he shows you his concepts and secrets to "off time" playing. Examples are performed at different metronome settings, and other approaches are explained, including taking an idea on one surface and moving it around kit. All of these examples are applicable to R&B, pop, rock, and gospel playing situations.
Also covered are creative concepts to spice up your drumming tool kit, including cool ideas of Spanky's own creation such as "partial diddles," "the echo," "the CD skip," and being able to play over-the-bar-line fills. There is also an extensive section on hand and foot techniques and tricks, including foot doubles, before-and-after effects with the hi-hat, "sneak attack" bass drum technique, playing off time with the ride cymbal, hi-hat/snare combinations, and much more.
All of the concepts presented on the video are then demonstrated by Spanky as he plays along to several funky, melodic tracks of his own composition.

I love how he actually uses a setup that most drummers could put together and work with, not a 97 piece kit with 17 hi-hats and 36 pedals, excluding 99% of drummers from even using half the stuff on the DVD

Also, the fact that he does so much with one pedal (something he's very well known for in his playing) is actually a testament to his technique. I am also a single player that does a lot extended 32nds and 16th triplets in my playing using heel toe technique. It frees up your left foot to keep doing hi-hat work vs. using a double pedal, and to me makes for a more comfortable setup. I think it's certainly worth teaching to open up more options, again without needing more gear.

So it sums up to two choices: 1.- Do you want more gear 2.- Do you refine your technique. I also saw the Big Drum Bonanza with Thomas Lang and Chris Coleman and Chris is using a single pedal. He tells a story where int he Gospel community you're supposed to do everything with a single pedal and that using two is considered cheating. He also comments he uses doubles in his home setup and live from time to time. The thing with drums is that there are so many options!!! How fast can you go? bpm?

It also depends on what music you play. Pop, Gospel or Speed metal and Fusion.

But the techniques available to you DEPEND on what equipment you have to use. The example I'll give is Thomas Lang's DVD. He has a setup that uses 4 hi-hats, and he spends a considerable amount of time on integrating all of those hi-hats into rhythms and patterns. Now there's nothing wrong with that, per se, but I don't have 4 hi-hats, nor would that be practical for me to gig with. So I'm just saying that I appreciate that he's playing on a setup like I'd actually have and use.

The right tool for the right job. I disagree though. You don't have to have the SAME kit to learn new stuff. So I don't think the exclusion argument applies. If I applied the same idea you propose to THIS specific video I could say he has TOO little equipment because he's playing triplets on his bass drum with 1 pedal. I don't know but that kinda sounds absurd to me. What I'm saying is that It's about technique and knowledge, not drums.
