I ran into him in a bar in Gatlinburg, TN. In 1989 I think. He and another fella was sitting at the bar, I sat down beside his buddy without noticing George. They were drinking whiskey, I noticed, and asked for the same. His buddy said “ Good choice brother” and I said “thanks, next round is on me”, That’s when George leaned in to the conversation and said to me, “ that’s really nice of you man, but not necessary”. That’s when I noticed who he was. I asked him if he was George Thorogood, he said “sometimes I am”. We laughed, and talked for about 45 mins. I ended up buying one round anyway, and George returned the favor. Super nice, and approachable guy, just an average Joe. I also play guitar, we talked about music, the blues mostly. Years later, I won a guitar on a radio station signed by him. I still have it. Small world.

George is a guitarist I have admired for a long, long time... I saw one of his shows in Milwaukee several years ago, and marveled at just how GOOD he sounded! It also didn’t hurt that he played one of my favorite songs, “I Drink Alone.” Not too shabby, I’d have to say. Keep on pickin,’ George!

Underrated guitar player? Yup. Understated musician? Uh huh. Under-acknowledged throughout the blues idiom? Sadly enough. Under-credited in the pages of most guitar publications? No question. ...why? How could any fan of guitar NOT have the urge to cop an open G tuning, grab a glass tube (or an 18mm socket like I do) and channel that buh-buh-buh-buh-BAAAD Thoroughgood vibe!? Here's to Lonesome George...a real guitar hero! Cheers.

3:07 Elizabeth Cotton. If you've never heard her play " Washington Blues " give it a listen/ watch here on RU-vid. She finger picks like nobodies business. She lays down the beat, bass line, lead, and rolls it all into one. Just amazing.

George has it right, most everything about blues guitar playing stops at Robert Johnson.
8 лет назад
+tp10488 no it doesn't. johnson didn't influence old blues, he was a son, not a father, if you get my drift. go see son house, charley patton, blind arthur blake(no vids of him, just listen) and mississippi john hurt and blind willie johnson. and others who played in the 20's. johnson influenced rock more than he did blues. he turned out to be one of the greater ones as we look back today, he really honed his stuff as ike zinnerman told him to do. but if you stop there, you're missing out on a great deal of stuff

normally, the kids these days think that a lesson is something that they see couple of hundreds notes in a minute.. I tell you what folks : yess this is a lesson.. because music is not something you can mathematise.. it derives from your emotions and thoughts.. listen to him, and listen to him good..

This video is titled "George Thorogood Guitar Lesson". Very little guitar playing in this lesson,, just an observation. Although, when I drink alone,, I prefer to be by myself! Paul Gilbert gives very good guitar lessons. I know from experience, dude. Well, not me personally,, this guy I know.. (see what I did there) I miss the 90s so much.

So hard to believe that a fab player like him cannot use a regular pick ... but hey .. he says it .. just baffles me though. Meanwhile, as I poke around over the years .. I find that so many of the top guitarists do not use picks ... one notable is Mark Knopfler ..another is Jeff Beck .... but it would be a long list if you tried to make one.

i hope other G.T fans won't be offended by what i say. notice how he talks about what he can't do.i can't play this or that."i couldn't play a strat" i can't use a pick etc...its an important lesson not only in music but in life...u gotta do what your good at.we all no well rounded players who play many styles great but would u pay to see them? being able to sing and rock like this guy takes a lot of talent. im glad he didn't go off some were and take flamenco lessons.
