4:00 "safe, reliable, effective and free" The "safe reliable and effective" part is debatable. As for free, I'm surprised that a libertarian like George Will would characterize this as free. Somebody has to pay for it.
No it isn’t. Vaccine benefits far outweigh side effects, and people who have it are objectively less likely to both spread the coronavirus and develop symptoms or die from COVID. Anyone who says differently is scientifically illiterate. Although understanding of science has always been a major weakness of libertarian ideology in practice.
@@JenkinsOwen if you are going to completely disregard anything that might happen in the future because of the jab you might be right. As we all know by now lots of drugs end up with serious long term side effects that can’t be known for a decade or more. What can’t be argued is that if you have already had COVID there is no reward and all risk for taking the jab.
I MUST ASK THE QUESTION: Mr. Elitist George Will, What authoritarian ACTIONS did Donald Trump take? His language was strong and he mused on some bad ideas. But what did he actually do? Please be specific. Did he weaponize the IRS? No, that was Obama. Did he put an ethnic group in internment camps? No, that was Roosevelt. Did he arrest a state legislature? No, that was Lincoln. Did he force people to take a vaccine? No, that was Biden. Did he use the CIA and FBI for politicol reasons? No, that was Obama. Did he start a war in Iraq to finish his Dad's legacy? No, that was Bush.
America is not a wealthy country. The median Australian's net worth is about three times the figure for the median American's net worth, so the typical Australian is better off in real terms than the typical American.
@@albionicamerican8806 You do understand that "in real terms" means normalized by purchasing power parity (PPP), right? Otherwise, complete garbage/meaningless numbers. Also, the U.S. has been on the cutting edge of innovation in manufacturing, so economies of scale due to automated mass production has actually increased the buying power of the most poor by about 10% since 1990.
The rich stay rich by spending like the poor and investing without stopping then the poor stay poor by spending like the rich yet not investing like the rich.

You guys at Reason need to end the Covid style skype interviews. I know it cuts costs, but it looks worse than most Gen Z channels where millionaires sell socialism.
@@connernickerson5509 Downgrading the quality of their interviews is an technological advance? And I'm a luddite for wanting higher quality, more in person interviews?
Oh, George! He means well but he's so 1900s. He's never in a position where he has to really stick up for himself or his beliefs. Not really in a position to loose. Trump was in an impossible situation. Either he let the media roll over him or be labeled a crybaby for defending himself. What is a person to do ? Will cannot relate. It's almost as if he wants the country to fail so he can look smart.
My only problem with a decentralized system is that governments don't want that....I'm not saying it's not possible but it's just unlikely...I personally believe government's will bring the hammer down on Bitcion because it's attacks their ability to mismanage the current
Honestly when he says what law could be passed to me you happy I (a conservative) literally have a list that if even just one is passed I would be happy. But funny thing is it's actually not a law to pass but rather reform or repeal. As I don't think we need more federal interference. But need less. Like if they repealed the nfa, put term limits on congress or repealed the patriot act and did not replace them with anything else I would be happy. Honestly all I want is to exercise my God given rights without government condescending to me and limiting or taking them away. Not that complex.
Exactly, my first thought was, "I can rattle off a list if 100+ laws I want repealed!" NFA, GCA, '86 Hughes Amendment to GOPA, OSH, Zerocare, close HUD, close HHS, close Department of Education, close Department of Agriculture, close Department of Labor, close IRS...literally hundreds of laws, all of them unconstitutional.
"Vaccine resistance is lunacy at this point".....wow. Does Will believe this or is he just making a point about being "results oriented". So the liberty to have sole control over what goes into one's body is....lunacy? That folks....ain't libertarian. George Will, if he does in fact believe in this "lunacy", should disavow any link to being libertarian.
This conflates the issue. One can be opposed to government mandates of the Covid vaccine and still think that someone’s refusal to take the vaccine is utter stupidity. I don’t want Biden telling private employers “you must order all your employees to get vaccinated” - but the people who don’t want the vaccine, forced or not, aren’t too bright
@@benjaminr6153 Yet you nor Will are interested in even entertaining the idea that these "vaccines" are truly the best answer to....what may simply be a overblown "nasty bug", not unlike the annual flu.
Damn Impressive Man is GW. I mean I'd probably vote for Trump even he were in a Super Max prison. And it's too bad George and him will never see eye to eye. But DAMN IMPRESSIVE .
Comparing the idea that there was enough fraud in the 2020 election to FDR conspiracies is a very backward comparison. A Better comparison to Trump's claim would be the claim Hillary made in 2016, that of Russiagate. I would wage that the fact the Senate didn't waste 3 years investigating Trump's claims is an improvement.
Reason is becoming more and more Authoritarian rather than Libertarian. Reason used to be a Magazine you can read Proudly Now you're just making Libertarians look stupid
You keep saying that. Can you provide an example of Reason becoming more "authoritarian" or "conservative" as you claim? You can't scream authoritarian at everything that's not left of center.
Very good interview. The only issue I have with Mr. Will is he continues to support Large Corporation that depend on MMT that allows them to strip the middle class of value/$. A strong middle class is needed to pay the Taxes that allow for Democracy to strive into the future.
I really heard nothing that meaningful same old rhetoric by conservative old men. The things he would have been saying would be very different if he wasn't sitting safely on a giant nest egg going through covid!
WHAT? Don't talk in slogans. You think you sound clever, but you make no sense.I Infrastructure in this country is falling apart...was " broken" before Biden was elected. You don't think anything was broken under tRump, who attempted a coup? Or you libertarians don't value norms, standards of conduct and laws?
Surely you jest? I am not always a fan of George Will, but your comment is inane, which I guess you know in your attempt to be provocative. Both of these men are highly literate and articulate. George Will may be the most articulate commentator and essayist in the country and he's 80.
"Mere politics should never be the all consuming passion of human endevour" "(Government should) Defend the shores, fill the potholes, and otherwise get out of the way"..... Okay... I'll listen... EDIT: 5 minutes in, 10 false claims... Meh... Go learn about tying knots instead. That would be more useful.
There's no comparison between the two. Thomas Sowell is way more right on huge number of many points. George Will is a liberal not a libertarian and not a leftist.
What a ridiculous question at around the five-minute mark, suggesting that Americans are never happy with how great we have it. I wonder if he has ever pondered the destruction wrought by the Military-Industrial complex or the families ruined by the regressive medical system?
Don't be deceived by George Will's impressive vocabulary into believing that every point he makes is well reasoned and sound. He just said Newt Gingrich was by and large a good thing, and justified his coarse and manipulative culture war tactics from the frustration of being in the minority party for decades. Poor Newt. Really? Wonder what George thinks about gerrymandering. Ugh.
It is the excellent vocabulary and encyclopedic command of the facts, which make the arguments worthy of consideration. The hypocrisy in the conclusions reveal Mr. Will's biases, but those biases in solutions don't change the facts or situations to be addressed. Persistent minorities need a way to meaningfully participate in the government, which is a feat not easily achieved with modern communications. There is an argument that the assumptions about local power in the US Constitution were finally overcome by the internet.
@@Garry_Combine I mean he's biased and idealistic compared to the other Reason journalists. He talks about bitcoin but not the actual blockchain technology emerging making bitcoin obsolete (which by the way he never addresses the inherent problems of bitcoin as a crypto). He likes to dunk on trump and never mentions any good about him, and ironically, this reporter went the mainstream perspective of January 6's coverage. Finally, we are in this really mediocre interview that was much talk about nothing. I like stossel and that younger guy who was actually talking about blockchain technology in the other videos should be on more than the reporter in this video. I suppose it's a tradeoff of quality over quantity so I prefer that young man to not shill in this case. In any event, the reporter in this video is a filler at best. Edit: I'm now hearing that this interview has a lot of errors in them too. Much worse than I remembered now.
Even Steve Bannon called ‘45 supporters “low propensity voters” many, many, times when he was speaking with educated interviewers. Honestly, I believe Mr. Bannon thinks they couldn’t spell either condescending or propensity.
You speak to the audience smart guy. When speaking to people who believe they are elite... speak to their stupidity.. exploit their blind spot. Tell them what they want to hear... to shock them and make yourself seem more relateable
George has a great point. I've been close to a couple of people that has Down Syndrome and the were the most genuine and honest people I'll ever know! Their live are extremely unique and just plain amazing! And yea, it would be genocide to single them out for abortion by definition!
@@patrickday4206 Are you saying a cure for Down Syndrome? I'm not sure what an extra Chromosome has to due to build up with protein? Maybe your making a different point I'm missing😁.
Donald Trump was a crybaby for pointing out that the media were all against him? Well, I WAS looking forward to hearing what Mr. Will had to say. After hearing that, it's clear he's either become stupid, or he's not paying attention. Which are arguably the same thing.
You'd be hard- pressed to challenge this man's attention.Trump's a cry baby because he won't admit he lost the election,. And what media was against him? He attacked any criticsm, calling it " fake news" and refused to hold press conferences. Open your eyes pal. He had Fox media in his pocket, right wing radio and social media, are/were reflexively devoted to him, : in fact tRump consulted with many of Fox pundits, in policy decisions.
@@8ofwands300 so you've got such severe confirmation bias that when the rest of the media's coverage of Trump was 90% negative, you believed that 90% of what he did was actually bad, and you lack the introspection and cognitive ability to realize that. Got it.
@@able34bravo37 ask yourself the same question silly man. I've got George Will agreeing with me. Let me guess - you believe that coverage of Biden has been" fair and balanced" out of Fox? If you're president, criticism and critique come with the territory. Trump garnered a lot of criticism because he deserved it. How you can continue to support this man who literally tried to subvert our system of government through violent means shows extreme blind cult-like devotion and YOUR selective attention.. The worst thing that ever happened to this country was tRump. We'll be living with the after effects of his recklessness and incompetence for decades. 😐
This (and some other recent G Will videos I've seen) are wonderful illustrations of why Michael Medved calls libertarians "loser-tarians". So in love with their intellectualism.... They can't win an election but they darn well know what Madison had to say on the issue.... Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed listening to lots of different ideas, but libertarians are like monks sitting in some high tower while the rest of the world falls into the dark ages. I've completely lost respect for Will. So devoted to his revulsion of Donald Trump that he failed to immediately jump up and condemn Mark Milley's treasonous actions! A man who conspired to thwart civilian control of the military and even called our most potent adversary on the side to assure them that he would warn them before the US launched a strike? And Mr Will seems to think that was a reasonable course of action? Sorry Jorge. I've lost respect for you.
Completely and utterly manipulated by right wing media. Milley didn’t usurp civilian control of the military and didn’t promise to tip off the Chinese before an attack. The fact you can believe such nonsense reveals volumes about your gullibility. Try reading more of the conversation. Milley was assuring the shaken Chinese that no attack was imminent and that in those types of scenarios there is ample buildup of negotiations and ultimatums.
@@wcg19891 The ChiComs were 'shaken'? That's laughable. The dirty little not-so secret is tyrannical governments have very good intelligence, know for a fact we'd never preemptively strike, would know about it even if we tried, and only the truly gullible would believe they were worried or fearful. Talk about a false moral equivalency. I don't care Milley talked to the ChiComs, but I find his conversation with Pelosi terrifying and his mismanagement of Afghanistan egregious. The man is incompetent, a leftist, and he's left America much weaker. He should have been dismissed.
...which ACTUALLY is an argument against this baseless claim that tRump won the election. Many GOP voters hated tRump but voted down ballot for Republicans. If you're going to invalidate a ballot, you can't cherry pick which part of it you don't like.
Yeah no, the USA didn't "give organized anti-slavery political movement" to the world. That title belongs to the British Empire which after the 1833 Abolition Act began to unilaterally stamp out slavery all over the world. By 1860s the USA was pretty much the last civilized country where slavery was law.
Anti-slavery Bill was born in Vermont 1777 The British also paid reparations to the slaveholders. For loss of property owned. They did not want Africans in their country.
"Civilized" doesn't extend to the Near East, nor China? There were differences in the culture of slave/master, but your statement is absurd simply based on numbers.
George I listened to the entire episode. Both host and guest (you) are entirely partisan, with dramatic overtones of intellectualism and balance. You have neither.
Very disappointing interview, and even more misleading title. Gillespie is usually a better interviewer and Will is usually much better at condensing points. He seems much more elitist than in the past, or his tone is more condescending. Over 12 minutes in and instead of laying out Will's case against the 1619 project, we have two pundits psycho-analyzing the electorate en masse. What a shame as I generally like both of them. At the very least, Reason should provide an honest title.
