One of my friends got really irregular grades from one teacher. One time, she got a B/ low A ( I can't remember) with a bunch of suggestions, so for the next essay she submitted the exact same one with the improvements. She got a C. Some teachers can't or won't do their job.

Not sure about this part. "Some" can be 2, or 20. Of course, there're "good" and "bad" students across all races and ethnicities. The question is the proportion.

Alot of people are also misconstruing what she said arguing that she said most of her black students are failing when in reality she said alot of her failing students are black. She does have implicit bias and the true proportion will tell if in fact she's being malicious. Plus there's also the possibility of her being a harsher and bias grader towards blacks. We simply don't know the truth to make a sound conclusion.

Yep, after working with all sorts of students from various backgrounds, I have indeed had my fair share of "at the bottom" students from different races. However, I was respectful enough to not generalize the races.

@@vincenttheo8841 Yeah, "some" is vague and does not tell us much, but I am sure if it were along the lines of 10 or more, she would have probably said "many," "numerous" or something more extreme. That law school is extremely selective and one of the best ones in the country, so I am sure her class sizes are small and that she likely does not have that many black students compared to other races based on the demographic breakdown of the school.

There are always going to be segments of a class who are performing worse than others, even in an all-white class. She should just enter the corporate world if she hates teaching.

It's not her job. She is there to teach. The students need to take more responsibility for themselves. They are adults.

Wealth proportional magnitude and cultural acceptance is why these ivy league schools feel discomforting for many who come there. I wanted to enlist for Harvard, had the GPA standards they wanted, SAT score (1580) and my academic record was almost near perfect. However, what slipped me from reality was the cost of going to that school. Yes scholarships are given, and there are many programs to give financial benefits to students who need to, but the sum in total would've costed me over $100,000. To put it more clear as possible, not everyone is going to be selected a scholarship that gives out $100,000 or so. It's luck of the draw, and the work you put in that they deem qualitative. But that wasn't my only issue. My other issue was traveling from a whole new state (about 560miles away) and paying to live there and a little more extra because I'm not a resident of Massachusetts. So the charges increase, or rather occur more gradually. It's definitely an issue in itself, but I also felt that I wouldn't fit in with other students who go there. Because elite schools are notorious for their wealth classes. Instead, I have found a more suitable college I can enjoy for a while. One that costed me only $1,000 because of scholarships and other programs funded by the state government. Also, remember guys, elite schools are very selective with who they choose. If you don't get accepted into one of them you wanted, it's most likely because they didn't find your character interesting enough to be well suited for the school. I've been rejected from Stanford 😥

Actually for admission its easier to get into ivy league schools if u are a first generation poc as opposed to a white male. It looks better for them.

Where did you get that from? I didn't see anything except an observation. What I did see is that the university fired her in a CYA moment and didn't promise to do anything to help those students. I think they should have focused on that instead.

I think in the future that the government will create babies ( of highest IQ people ) in artificial wombs . So when a doctor is needed , then the government will take the sperm and egg of the smartest man and woman , then create a baby with it , then raise it to become a doctor . Maybe just maybe the disparity could be due to deeper issues than race? Like some students having to juggle other obligations, or having an environment at home that makes it difficult to study, or not having proper guidance...if you are truly concerned about your students, you would try to understand and help them, not throw up your hands and judge them like some clueless karen

@@kuruptzZz IMO, there are just too many assumptions being made in the way people are judging her: assuming that she thinks black students perform poorly entirely because they're black, assuming that she doesn't realize that there are or could be systemic reasons for why students underperform, assuming that she grades black students differently, assuming that she wants black students to continue to perform poorly. I see absolutely no evidence in those clips to support any of these assumptions. She saw that black students underperform, that is what she stated, and that is why she got fired. As far as I know, there's no evidence to support any assumptions that she's racist. Certainly if there is, it's not in those video clips.

Probably not even close to the racist stuff she says. A massive majority of white folks in America are so inherently racist they cannot discern between what is and isn't racist and when you call them on it they freak out. Generational inherited racism is a massive problem in America, it's honestly the main problem and most other things are symptoms of it. It's also possible that she subconsciously grades black students lower than white. There have been quite a few studies in both US and UK that have demonstrated that the work of black students suddenly gets better scores when the grader doesn't have any identifying info about them (i.e. only a serial number is used to tell apart the tests) versus when there is some identifying factor - even a name

@@raerohan4241 these tests are old and international. even a migrant as a teacher expected mistakes from migrant kids and thereby look more into these works, creating a stricter judgement. even teachers, who knew about this phanomen and tried to judgefairly with this effect in mind failed to grade equal in studies. it is not racism, its stereotypical thinking and tricks on our own mind, because the controll of performing is longer than our average concentration time, so we have weak mind times and trick ourself in these moments. the sad truth is a defacto difference of performances by race in the USA, because the society in the USA remains to be racistic. Or at least these black students would claim, that their own background was deformed by racism, thereby even the black students themself will support the claim of the Prof. at any moment of their semester, that their performances are hindered by the constant racism of the society on their shoulders over their whole livetimes. i wonder if anyone realice, that racistic social structures exist for centuries in every country of this world for the specific reason, that it is a strong, tight and complex system of millions of individuals of all parts of this system and stigmatized to be problematical to discuss in public for the same time, thereby never truly desolved, if this is possible. non-related to this case or to US-society.

It seems she already has a disposition on them having bad grades before the semesters even start. So she's starting the semester off with a negative bias for the black students so of course as a human, she's gonna find her own patterns to support her own narratives and im assuming has misgrader a lot of their papers. I dated 2 teachers 1 high school seniors and one a professor at a uni im an alum to. She said she had to take specific training courses to get rid of her natural bias and replace it with a professional one to do her job correctly because she noticed she was having bias doing grades for certain students. She noticed she was giving more praise to her good students and leaving her bad ones behind. So she changed. Humans don't tend to pick up on their own innate BS when decision making. So she is probably grading papers incorrectly and that's why the students do poorly. Which is probably judging by her age, a bias she most certainly already had before going into this profession in the first place.

Your comment about addressing her teaching style doesn't answer the question of why others succeeded in the class. Also, it is a known fact that universities nowadays - undergraduate and graduate programs alike - discriminate against Asians in the admission process to maintain an ideal "diversity" ethnic ratio.

The fact that it's singled out to be african americans students underperforming that gives her angst, and the fact that she's speaking about it like it's inevitable, THAT'S the racist part. Pretty blatant. It's the difference between saying "There are people who can't afford or won't pay for car loans of these prices" and "african americans aren't going to pay that much for a car loan". One statement addresses a problem/reality of the situation as a whole, the other statement singles out a subset of people by race and creates a mentality based around a negative stereotype. She thinks her black students are innately less intelligent than her other students based on some black students performing at the bottom, even though she’s had black students perform at the top. Undoubtedly, she’s had white students perform at the bottom as well, given the fact that whites make up the majority of the student body and blacks make up only 7%, that’s less than any other ethnicity at Georgetown. It would be highly improbable for her to have more black students than white students in the bottom at any given time, yet she’s not making that assumption about white students. This is because she only sees race as a factor for her non-white students, in particular her black students, which is a clear racial bias. Furthermore, stating “those students probably don’t learn in the first place”, speaks to your racial bias, so I’m afraid you’ve given yourself away. You’re either profoundly ignorant, or you knowingly came to the comments to uphold institutional/structural racism, so bye!

Well maybe, unlike you, some people want to take time to process things and understand the truth before jumping to conclusions.

As a teacher myself I have to agree with this statement. I had a former colleague who would berate the whole class for getting low marks on his Biology tests. He was a poor communicator and did not present the material in an approachable or interesting manner. He also only taught to the quicker students and would leave the students who needed more time to process in the dust. His classes would start out with 30 students and end with less than 10 by the end of the year. He was quite proud of this record. It was really hard to watch. Luckily he retired. I now teach those Biology classes.

I got purged from the class roster by a professor for being absent too many times even though the third time I was absent was because she had offered to take me to the disability office. I highly doubt she purged every student who is late or absent three or four times. I’m white and she was ethnically Korean but this rule could be used to purge black students if she only selectively applies it.

That is not a good expectation to have. However, he might have some validity to what they're saying due to experience. I went through post graduate school myself and have encountered black students (African American) who were no where near prepared for even undergrad or even graduate school. SOME of them could not keep up with the rigor of the classroom. However, I've known many Nigerian's who did exceptionally well in undergrad and graduate studies. I believe it has something to do with the American education system. There are so many factors involved and it does not always come down to race and money.

She said there are very good students in her class including some black students. However, black students are disproportionally failing her class than other students. I don't see how her teaching method is flawed if there are students passing her class.

Not intentionally but unknowingly due to confirmation bias. For example, you expect the student to do poorly so you end up grading that student's paper based on that preconceived notion, and that bias can stop you from being a fair grader.

Even more, I don't really see her using any evidence to back up her claims. There's no statistical evidence aside from the grades she assigned which can easily fall into confirmation bias. Due to this, I made my comment as only an interpretation of what could have happened based on the limited knowledge I have available. Even more, the fact that she was fired certainly does imply that my argument is quite plausible as the persons there would certainly have evidence and in-depth information to suggest that she did indeed have bias. While there is the possibility of firing her due to "cancel culture", I highly doubt it as based on the original comment that started this thread: if she was actually helping students, she have done nothing wrong and there would be no outrage.

@@stevengu1253 p.s. there are many times when people have been unfairly fired. Some have been unjustly sentenced to death, too. We haven’t seen the whole video, so we cannot really speak definitely about this case. That the university chose to act one way is not enough: I’m sure the professor disagrees with that decision, so we’re back to square one: two sides without enough information to pick one.

I don't feel sorry for him because if he didn't agree with her he should have said something. The only way to make this foolishness stop is to call it out.

She was demonstrating an expectation that may have lead to unconscious bias in her grading. That was likely the reason for the complaint and the university's action.

She showed bias .. Which means it may be why the black ppl in her class perform lower. Is she biased while grading and interacting with students??? May be since she seems to think every time she gets low levels in her words
