I had a wonderful opportunity to go cage diving with sharks. The water tank contained four species; Silvertips, sand tigers, great hammerheads, and a single tiger shark. This is an incredible moment I will never forget. What's even more gratifying is that the majority of the proceeds made from ticket sales goes directly to research these fascinating sea creatures.
These apex predators are important for maintaining a critical balance in the marine ecosystem. Despite their portrayal as mindless killing machines via movies and media, the reality is that WE are killing sharks a lot more than they do to us. Sharks are constantly under threat from both commercial and illegal fishing activities, especially with the market for shark fin soup. Some species would not reach sexual maturity until they are more than 20 years old, and don't produce many young.
