Learn about iconic artist Georgia O'Keeffe and the New Mexico residences she lovingly crafted from former Georgia O'Keeffe Museum curator, Carolyn Kastner.
Artist Georgia O'Keeffe first traveled to New Mexico from the East Coast in 1917. She moved there permanently in 1949, and she ultimately had two homes outside Santa Fe.
Carolyn Kastner knows these homes intimately as the recently retired curator with the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, the manager for these properties. Kastner researched the two sites house and grounds that O'Keeffe purchased, restored, and carefully designed to suit her distinct aesthetic as well as needs for home and studio.
Originally recorded the evening of Tuesday, February 19, 2019 in the Howard E. Wooden Lecture Hall at the Wichita Art Museum, in Wichita, Kansas.

I'm only 24 minutes in and this is already one of the most enjoyable vids I've been fortunate to come across. The museum has been added to my bucket list, and I look forward to it soon as it's less than 500 miles away. Would make a very worthy, and incredibly beautiful motorcycle trip :)

Im an artist and live in the desert. I relate and understand her want to be immersed in the beauty around her. When your outside, the landscape consumes you and the experience is addicting. Placing those windows helps create the same experience within the home. I love how she could see the beauty in it all. Her excitement of exploring the landscape around her is childlike, collecting bones etc. She is very inspiring in the sense she captured her experience and was able to express it and share that with the world.

This was a beautiful and human presentation of an American Icon~I have adored since I became aware of her, as a very young child, in the 70’s. Thank you-this was absolutely lovely.

Beautiful presentation! I was born in Albuquerque in Oct. 1969. I lived in Old Town as a child, and though we moved to Utah when I was 10 the colors of adobe, wood, sage brush, and the Sandia Mountains marked my since of style and esthetics for life. I have a theory that the colors and esthetics that surround us as babies and as we grow stay with us for life and inspire us in ways we may not always recognize, but our souls remember. I think Georgia O'Keeffe marked the soul of New Mexico with her colors and esthetics, and New Mexico was a place her soul remembered.

Christopher Springmann is the photographer who created the opening image of Georgia O'Keeffe, taken in 1974 at her Abiquiú home, under the Alexander Calder mobile. This photograph also appears in "Georgia O'Keeffe and Her Houses," published by the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico. A photo credit is given at 1:09:18 of this program - thank you!

Thanks . Although I knew a little bit about both houses, your explanations gave me more knowledge and comprehension about her way of living, how meticulous she was, so aware of what she needs and the importance of her space. Her studio and views were sacred. How dare someone could get inside.Her voice did not tremble to tell her, if that happen again, she won’t be able to visit anymore. Her paintings are beautiful, so was the way she arranged her furniture. Few pieces, but modern, great for the ambiance of the house. Hope to listen to further lectures. A pleasure!

The day I went to Georgia's home I was surprised by all the dust that seemed to be everywhere. I stopped across from her place at a gas station making sure I was at the right place. Strange to say, every photo I took that day came out black, nothing. I was told she was staying at her other home and I went there only to find her gone.

когда мы видим череп на картине ( зачастую человеческий в натюрморте) мы знаем - это ванитас, и как правило относим это к себе. У Джорджии О'Киф череп животного на фоне прекрасной безжизненной пустыни воспринимается как смерть всего живого, смерть планетарного масштаба ( которая быть может уже случилась ) как на Марсе. И маленький цветочек рядом говорит : " вспомни о жизни".

полностью согласна с ней, что ежедневный правильный выбор-это важно. недавно купила 2 пары босоножек и одни не совсем то, что нужно. и этот, не совсем тот выбор, даже такой мелочи ( дело не в деньгах) выбивает из колеи и отбрасывает назад и ты сам не свой. ( тем более что обувь определяет твой характер и буквально лежит в основе твоего образа и в тоже время заканчивает или завершает его). С другими безделушками такая же история. Всегда важно попасть в себя. И именно дешовые вещи обязывают, и Бог в мелочах, потому что в дорогих и больших вещах другие обстоятельства могут служить оправданием ( денег не хватило, купил то что было). PS: согласна с остальными комментариями насчёт лишней болтовни в выкриков из зала в начале лекции это очень ужасно. Меня стало подташнивать.брр

Like every other filmed lecture we see, this is just a dim shot of a talking head in the far distance for fifteen minutes with the speaker blah blah blahing before we ever see a photo of what she's talking about, which is the visual images we came to see. By then she's lost half her listeners. These academics know nothing about film or documentary or drama or how to create a story and hold an audience.
