Yes, I agree. But it's also her job to teach her children what is right and wrong to read. It's 50% parents and 50% the school's responsibility. If the books were removed from the school the kids would look in other areas to read the content. This is why the kids should be taught the differences between right and wrong.

The Bible is not taught in Public School. The Bible is taught in Church, Sunday School is age appropriate teachings. I think it's disputable, it obviously depends what kind of a school it is and whether the book is age restricted and a million other factors. What's really absurd is the fact that they include the book in the library but prohibit her from citing it because it could be offensive xD On another note: What's with the school board being set up like a court room? Make everyone else feel small?! The city I'm from is about the same size as cherokee county, there these kinds of meetings are just held in "normal" meeting rooms. You know, seeing eye to eye and all...

@@jakobtheiner6329 um… no. Children are children. Regardless of age. Sexual content shouldn’t be at the forefront of an educational setting. ONLY from a biological learning context. And even still, it shouldn’t be made widely available to all students considering their parents all likely hold different values and PARENTS should be the deciding factor on when and how their children learn about sexual interactions. We can all deem that it needs to be taught for the betterment of society but over reaching on parents is not how you progress. And most certainly not sexually explicit content like she was reciting. If it’s not ok for a school board meeting FULL OF ADULTS, then it is not ok to be on a library shelf. 🤷🏼‍♀️

It's not OK to read this aloud in front of the school board who's meetings are being broadcast because children might hear, but those same kids could check that very book out from the library. So let's start with the book that has caused more wars, deaths, and suffering than all of the other books combined, the Bible. This single piece of fiction and the various cults that have sprung up around it, include pedeophite Roman Catholic priests and nuns, various cult leaders that have declared war on other cults because their cult leaders said 'you' instead of 'thee' among other such irrational reasons. And the worst thing, here in the United States where the various Christian cultist leaders sprout, "Separation of State and religion" have the gall to have bribed politicians enough to have printed on our money, "In God We Trust". No, I don't trust God nor do I " Trust" any fictional character. Oh, and I have a couple of questions for Christians. If the 'Old Testiment is to be believed, who was Cains wife and who married them? Why should anyone have to file a challenge to remove a book that shouldn’t be there to begin with? We live in a time where girls are fighting to wear basically nothing, risqué clothes & saying boys should control themselves & yes I agree with that but also, adding to the challenge for young boys to control themselves by providing sexual risqué books like this is ok?! What if a boy (or girl) was reading this during class & got sexual aroused?! I mean where is the common sense?! This mom proved a very valid point, they’re at a “school board” meeting BUT the book in the “school” is too inappropriate to read to the board?! Wow, hypocrisy at its finest!!! When I was in school, teachers kept track of what students were reading. My teachers kept a list to make sure we were reading something in our reading level. And if we weren’t, we had to send the book back to the library and choose another one. I’m not saying teachers need to parent. I’m saying that teachers need to STAND with the parents! There are too many parents standing alone! Where are the teachers???

It's not about banning books. It's about public funds being used to make inappropriate material available at school. I want my kids to read anything at all and be intellectually engaged with the material. What is appropriate for personal use, isn't necessarily appropriate for school. And if the law would punish an adult for giving that material to a minor, the school should ALSO be restrained from distribution.

A few years ago I took the school bus driver training classes to become a bus driver. One thing that they stressed very strongly and the biggest fear all schools have is PR with the parents. They stressed over and over what ever you do , do not upset the parents because they are terrified of parents pulling their kids out of their school. My boy is in grade 11 and some of the things he says he hears from the teachers today would have gotten the teacher walked out of the school in my day. Schools are becoming unfit for children and liberalism is the disease that is destroying America.

Money that's based on attendance, number of students enrolled and on and on. If you home schooled your child that would take money coming into that school system. Besides them having a conflict of interest, too often they just comply with whatever the school district superintendent wants. Many years ago as a 7th grader I was taking too long finding a book in the school library to read, and my wise, old teacher became frustrated with me and went and chose a book for me and put it in my hands and said "Here, read this one." It was Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Granted, it was probably a difficult book for a 7th grader to read, but I did my best to get through it. Now, many, many years later that is the one highlight of that year I can still remember and also the only school library book that I ever remember reading from any grade. That teacher really helped me a lot that day. The problem is that kids these days are not exposed to great literature, and it's all about this woke crap. Shame on that school board president for even making a public statement about this, and if she clearly can't understand the irony of the situation then she's not qualified to be on the board of education.

The kids are teaching the other kids. My kid graduated in 019 and she was very open with me and I have been horrified the whole time. I home schooled till 5th grade and drove school bus. I was bullied for my choice . Fight like hell for your kids and be up front with them.

The ONE part I find troubling (beyond the EXTREME inappropriate book/books) is that it took covid for parents to get involved. I was in PES with a mother who was very involved. PTA and teachers meetings. She reviewed the curriculum, what I was learning, demanded access to my tests. Took the time to visit my teachers regularly. Granted it was wide ruled paper, no 2 pencils and books then, not computers. But it didn't take a "FLU" for her and other mothers to get involved. WHEN DID PARENTS QUIT SUPERVISING EDUCATION? How did it get this far? And why as a property owner am I allowing my tax dollars to fund SUCH FILTH? ~ Next time you hear MAY GOD CONTINUE TO BLESS AMERICA, think back to the materials we allowed our most innocent to be exposed to. You think He is still willing? WE HAVE ONE JOB...keep the children safe.

Yes, we citizens of the USA have failed in many ways. Got complacent. Many excuses. When my kids were in school, the whole system got to know me lol. I had 4 kids in school, single mom and worked. I think it was easier 40 years ago. Now I try my presence as a grandma and there are many limits. Just to get through the doors of the school.

I actually read the book the was reading, i was 16 and had no friends. I graduated a long time ago, but at the time It made me extremely uncomfortable. I didn’t understand why that scene had to be in there.

The only thing I disagree with her on is that she loves her school system. Every public school I have encountered is a scam. Teachers are literally prohibited from failing students. This is one of the biggest problems we have as a country, but we are forced to argue about gender bathroom rights and other BS we have had figured out for hundreds of years.

This is an unfortunate requirement in school systems which have quotas for output. Then there are Social-economic deficiencies compounding the inhibition for children to obtain an "well-rounded" education.

If you don’t have kids currently in the system you shouldn’t be allowed be on a school board. And when your kid graduates you’re gone.

Looks like they need to set up an independent school district free of the Department of Education. Sick and twisted individuals have taken power and the only way to nullify that without violence is to simply break away from the DOE. It requires higher taxes, usually in the form of property taxes, but in this case it's worth it.

The sad irony is that I grew up in Cherokee and those books would never have made it to the shelf. In 1972 (as a senior) my contemporary lit teacher assigned us to read "Deliverance" before she had read it. After she started reading it, she walked in fear of losing her job for weeks. My, how the times have changed.
