George is right. A lot of churches talk a big game about forgiveness and community but as soon as someone comes along that genuinely needs love and compassion but doesn't meet the communities reputation they are ostracized. Jesus stood with the marginalized and oppressed and was killed by religion allied with government.

Ik. I wish they would stop talking about Sheldon's father in TBBT like as if he was the enemy. Yes he cheated on Mary but she did the same shit. She is really a hypocrit cause she talks about having sex and not being married which she did before the kids were born. She got pregnant with Georgie and married George because of it. Then she talks bad about her sons actions and let's others do the same and not stand up for her son and in the TBBT she was sleeping with some other men like come on seriously. This so much. After all that was done for Pastor Jeff during and following his questionable first marriage and getting him together with his current wife, for him to stab Mary in the back and shun the family is despicable and ruined the character for me. When we had a similar unplanned pregnancy situation in my family nearly a decade before the timeline in Young Sheldon, people weren't happy with the situation, but didn't act that bad. This storyline feels very contrived to force a chain of events to justify trying to get back on Big Bang's canon of Sheldon's home life being chaos and George being a bad father who cheated on his wife. Yet, I don't recall any mention in Big Bang of Georgie having a kid, and other characters seem to be thrown under the bus to make George the sympathetic character, who I guess the writers will protray as driven to cheat because of family pressure and his wife's relationship with another man... a relationship that was never mentioned in Big Bang.

Well here’s the flipside. I grew up as a preachers kid, fundamental legalistic Baptist. The reason people are asked to step down during situations like this is because leaders of the church are held to a higher standard, and they are expected to be above reproach. The Bible does talk about being above reproach. While I personally disagree with this, I also do understand the purpose for it. It’s very difficult to have standards in your church and then have people in leadership positions not following those standards. So it’s sort of like damned if you do and damned if you don’t. Either way somebody’s going to be upset. It’s just a matter of picking which side you want to be upset with you. They choose to try to show a good example to the general public as a way of encouraging them to come into the church, hopefully making the decision to live for the Lord. To people who are not Christians, and the outside world in general, it appears to be hypocrisy. Actually it’s not. It’s about trying to live up to God’s standards, and also giving people who are going through these difficult situations the time away they need to get their house in order. How can somebody possibly be in a leadership position and counsel others when they are personally going through a crisis? I just now started watching it so I don’t know what the previous seasons entailed, but as it turns out when my parents ended up divorcing years later, my dad gave up his church. Same philosophy. How can you be a leader in a church if you don’t have your own house in order?

@a.m.s6611 2 года назад
@@ddss3042 I agree with everything you said, it's just that in this case it is a complete hypocrisy because Pastor Jeffs life has been a mess on many occasions and he has no moral right to ask anyone to step down because if they were to set things in order they should start with him (also I know its a fictitious comedy and so they are not going to study the bible to write his dialogue but if he were real he wouldn't be fit to lead anyone because from what I've seen his bible knowledge and understanding is somewhat lacking)

@@a.m.s6611 bingo! I think it is very difficult for Hollywood to write stories about genuine faith in legitimate churches because let’s be honest, Hollywood doesn’t have a clue what a real Christian is. They just find someone with a bad story and take it from there. From the outside you can make any story you want. Only those on the inside truly know the genuine hearts of the vast majority of the people in the church. And those that aren’t? I know Mary comes off as a judgemental jerk sometimes, but everyone knew that her heart was always in the right place. She always helped people, the first to volunteer when the church or anyone within it needed help. But as soon as one of her kids stepped out of line and made a big mistake, everything she'd done was null and void, and worse she's forced to either blame them (which I don't believe she, as a person, can) or her son (which is kind of hypocritical since she was in a similar situation when Georgie was born). I think I feel the worst for Georgie. He knows he made a mistake, and he's trying his best to try and act responsibly and minimize the damage inflicted on everybody, but this is all spiralling out of control and it's too much for one man to do anything about. One man can't do anything when the forest is ablaze. I have a feeling the season is going to end on a downer, I think the inevitable is about to happen to George, and that will mark the true beginning of the tragedy.

This is so sad. And George Sr is 100% correct. This is NOT what church family should be like!! In this situation at my church, the experienced Mums and Dads take the new couple under their wing. They give them a place to share their feelings, and support them. And the whole church helps practically. New Dad has to work? Someone will volunteer to take / go with New Mum appointments. They need baby clothes, or furniture for the nursery? Church comes together and passes things down, or gifts things. We make a meal roster to cook for the new parents for the first few weeks after the baby comes, so that they don’t have to worry about making meals when they’re exhausted. That’s how church family is supposed to be. And it makes me sad that so many aren’t showing that love and compassion.

It was so bad that everyone in their town refused to do any business with them and treated them lower than dirt. They were forced to leave the state because the word spread that much. I have noticed protestant Texans are the biggest hypocrites in the entire world. They preach forgiveness and southern hospitality, yet as soon as things go wrong, they make sure you suffer for it.

I'm very sorry that you had this experience however I have to emphasize that things like this don't always happen not all churches are like this there are many properties were people are much more forgiving and it doesn't reflect what Christianity teaches that just reflects mistakes that people in the congregation can make don't confuse the two and don't let it affect your relationship with God

Such a spot on example of what churches are like. A friend of mine got pregnant when we were in high school; since we were all Catholic, she decided to have the baby since the church considered abortion to be an unforgivable sin. Her boyfriend married her and joined the Army to provide for his new family, dropping out of school to do so. She finished high school with the help of her parents and got a part time job to help save up for a house of their own. The church basically expelled the entire family, saying that their daughter's out of wedlock pregnancy was not acceptable. This despite the family asking the church for spiritual support and guidance. The whole thing was disgusting. It was one of many incidents that led be to walk away from organized religion. I don't need another man to tell me how to approach my faith.

Frankly one of the biggest reasons why I left religion behind. They talk a big game about community, love, and forgiveness, but at the end of the day, they will cast you aside the moment your reputation is tarnished, even if you did nothing to tarnish it. It's all about protecting their image. What's worse is when they try to get you to come back by guilting you. My parents do that all the time, and they refuse to realize that it only drives me away further. All their proselytizing makes me less, not more, likely to go back to the church, and I have no intention to do so. Not now, not ever.

Didn't Pastor Jeff's other secretary Peg once have a baby and not even know who the father was? She mentioned it to Georgie in a season 3(?) episode where he had to work with her at the church carnival. Pastor Jeff still let her work for him. Of course, it would have been a long time ago, and maybe she married one of the potential fathers and told people he was the only potential father. It was probably before she started working for Pastor Jeff. But she had no problem telling Georgie and wasn't worried about him telling other people.

Interesting that Pastor Jeff wasn’t portrayed as the smug holier-than-thou while sacking Mary, that I would’ve thought most people in the world would love to portray him to be. Instead, he was in a dilemma - wanting to be on Mary’s side but basically lacked the spine while giving in to the “community’s” gossips. Thankfully, that turned out to be good writing - the compassion he showed Mee Maw at the end-of-season tornado. (Granted, he probably showed his gratitude after having a shelter to save his life, but most lesser men in his position would’ve still snitched).

I'm not sure what the law was in Texas in the 80s or 90s, but today if Mandy, who is 29, had any sexual intercourse with 17 year old Georgie this would be considered rape. What is tricky is the fact that they did both consent, but Georgie lied about being a minor. Yes, 17 year olds are children. It does not matter how much experience or maturity they have, they are children. This makes the situation worse, not just the unwanted/unplanned pregnancy. If anything Mandy could offer the child up for adoption. It would make an interesting spin in the show, but it seems just as interesting as is.

This is why I don’t practice religion, even though I was raised Methodist. I don’t have a problem with the moral teachings of a religious group, but with the people who don’t practice what they preach. I grew up in a family of 10 children, and my father left when I was 7 years old. We had recently moved to a rural town and we joined the local Methodist Church, but my mother was never accepted as one of the in crowd in the church. I feel that it was that people in the church looked down on my mother for being divorced and having 10 children, so even though I did as my mother asked and did communion and every thing church related, I could never really call myself a Christian or any religious sect. And it’s funny how the main person Christianity reveres is someone who had a companion who was considered the scum of society, Mary Magdelane. And yet many of the followers of the group who claims to follow his teachings are always quick to judge those who make socially questionable decisions. And I’m not just talking about the Christian faith, there are numerous beliefs in the world where some of the followers don’t act as they are taught. That’s why I don’t prescribe to religion, because of the hypocrisy.

I think George should have reminded Pastor Jeff that when he was going through a separation, and divorce there were people in the congregation that were talking about him. So Pastor Jeff....PASTOR Jeff doesn't think it would be necessary to help Mary and put an end to the judgemt? Guess he didn't read anything containing Jesus Christ or else he would be realising he is commiting a sin here. For example: In the book of John a prostitute is brought into court. Jesus simple says (I'm german, so the translation may as well be different, than the english bible): "Those of you who are without sin, shall throw the first stone." The outcome? Everyone leaves, the prostitute is free to go. So Jesus Christ "helped" a prostitute, who is way more sinful, than George, Mandy or Mary, but Pastor Jeff can't make a simple sermon talking abput judgement and how it is wrong?

honestly I think it is not Georgie's fault. He doesn't like the way his family functions and tries to get away from it for autonomy just as any other teenager would do. HE got a girl pregnant, that was stupid of him, but not wrong. He is sticking up for himself, caring for Mandy, trying to be a good father even though he knows he is way too young for it. He is not running away from responsibilities and his mistakes. The only thing he needed right now was his family's support but to Mary, the society is too much of a factor over her own kid's happiness. She is controlling everyone and gets angry whenever things are out of place. George has tried to be good husband, maybe not the best, but he didn't shun her out for her controlling attitude. She is crying because her life is hard, she doesn't realise how hard she has made it for the other people. Mary is controlling mother who thinks that whatever the society dictates her to do must be done by her entire family .
