Rooting geranium cuttings in water. Fast and reliable method of geranium propagation. New method without any rotting of stems cutting. Geranium propagation for beginners. The varieties of zonal, royal or garden geraniums (Pelargonium x hortorum) are obtained as a result of hybridization and gene modification and therefore there can be, NO WAY propagation by seeds. Geranium reproduces ONLY by vegetative cloning, micro propagation and rooting cutting. I want to share with you my simple method by which I I manage to grow geranium for my own needs and even for sale.
The cuttings can also be immediately planted in garden soil by dipping them into a synthetic or natural root stimulant hormone, and in this case, the cuttings, depending on the conditions, may rot and not be taken, for example, if insufficient humidity, low temperature and low light. And I came up with a simple, very effective method, with a very low rate of loss of cuttings. What is the main reason and mistakes behind negative results and cuttings rot? And what can be done to possibly eliminate this and achieve positive effect. One of the reasons why geranium cuttings rot is when you just put them in a glass where they are cramped or there are too many of them, we already talked about this in our video: «Universal method for rooting stems cutting in the first part, see the link below. If the plants are placed tightly, the lack of ventilation contributes to the rapid reproduction of fungi and bacteria. #geraniums #GeraniumPropagation #GeraniumCuttings #RootingGeraniums #Pelargonium#plantpropagation #plantcutting #pottedplants #pottedgarden #stemcutting #rooting #rootinghormone #regrowing

Geraniums is one of the easiest plants to propagate. I just take a cutting, plant it straight into soil / potting mix and it just grows.

This was super informative. Glad I found you and I'm looking forward to learning more with your other videos. I'm a "recovering black thumb". I've had terrible luck with houseplants, partially due to my own lack of knowledge and also due to very low light in my home. Last year I bought grow lights for the first time and had great luck. Now I'm doing my best to learn all I can to keep everything alive. I was gifted a Geranium which I've never had before. I brought it inside for the winter; so far it's doing great under the grow bulb. I'd like to take a cutting or two as a "backup" in case I mess something up (and also to have more!). Not sure how often to water it over the winter indoors, etc. Also, it's in a plastic coffee can with no holes and in what appears to be mostly clay/gravel and not good soil (that's how it was given to me), which makes me nervous, but it seems happy so I don't dare change anything. I really appreciate your thorough explanations about not just what to do, but WHY to do it. Thank you!!

It's usually recommended to keep geranium cuttings in almost dry soil in a dark place until you see some growth in the leaves. However your bottle with holes will be perfect for rooting basil which roots easily in water

Years ago you would take cuttings and let the cut end scab over on the bench overnight and that would keep them from rotting in the soil. Maybe it doesn't matter so much because I've had real good results with rooting in water and soil with practically no rot in either. You just have to practice to get good at it and experiment. Most all cuttings can be rooted in water. The quality of your water does matter.

I have a bunch of geraniums I’ll be propagating as they get lanky when they grow. Hmmm wondering whether to place right in soil or do the water thing again? It is easy in water though and too hot right now to plant so maybe in water by the time they root wheather will be cooler as well.

That is very valuable information about the potassium permanganate. Not for it's antimicrobial properties since there are so many options there but the fact you say it can seal the fresh cut wound on cuttings. That is one of the most immediate issues with cuttings is rot from the cut. Do you know if this can be used as a dip to seal cuttings or a soak? If so roughly how long to sit cuttings in the soak? I'm starting to think water rooting isn't the "best" way to root cuttings even though it works for so many things. Why? Because of my experience with jasmine sambac cuttings. You can put them in water with dyna gro kln rooting hormone/silca and months later still no roots! They need dark and pressure(something pushed up against the stem) to form roots. Which is why they are rooted in damp sand commonly. I have the feeling this holds true largely across the board with most cuttings in that it will give superior results even for those that can just water root. There have been experiments showing cuttings rooted in water root much better/bigger root mass if they are not free hanging but have pressure against them like stuck in marbles in the water. Also light hitting where the roots would grow slows down root development. So I think perhaps the best method is damp sand/perlite/pumice to stick the cuttings in and root. There is no water line, but it's damp and air hitting all over the stem so roots can form all over not just mostly near the waterline like you talk about. It's kinda a lot like rooting in moss but safer since you don't run into too high humidity issues and too wet of moss/dry of moss. Thought I would share.

Use pink solution of potassium permanganate, leave the cutting in that solution until all the permanganate reacts and make the deposit. Water will be clear again in a few days, then just add some water, if needed. Jasmine vine cutting generally very hard to root. My stephanotis was in water for 2 months, before I noticed small root.

Thank you so much for the great video and information. Please could you advise if the bottle or container needs to be clear to allow light to the roots whilst in water or if a white or blue water pipe sealed at the ends and holes drilled in it would work?

Couple questions please... I haven't bought any permanganate yet, and my cuttings always seem to rot in water. So I've been putting them in potting soil mixed with perllite.. But only 2 of 8 seem to develop roots. The rest seem to rot. I have tried sterilizing the soil in the oven at about 180 degrees, but it only helps a bit. Would the permanganate sterilize the soil of a cutting placed in potting soil? I have also tried again and again to get a petiole cutting to grow roots. (As a matter of interest and a challenge.) I have only one such cutting that has survived any length of time. The petiole seems to have increased in height, and the leaf is just as health as ever, so i suspect it has grown roots. I'm reluctant to pull it out of the dirt to see if there are roots for fear of killing it. Have you ever rooted any petioles in water and permanganate?

I'm trying this but I got a film of brownish residue at the bottom of the tube. The water is otherwise clear now. I wonder should I change the water and crystals....

I was so happy to see this site and I jumped in right away to try it. Thus far I have lost half of my 16 cuttings to rot and the other 8 have leaves but ZERO roots and its almost 4 weeks. Has anyone else done this and had good results? I am going to try it again. I just do not understand what is happening that I am unable to grow geraniums from cuttings or seed. I live in California and I have tried several different ways but nothing is working. If I buy plants from stores they take off like gang busters but rooting or growing from seed is not working for me. I just want to get it right!
