I am a big fan of Gerber tools and knives Sootch00. I carry one of the multi-tool ones that my Dad had with him all the time. You can't bet a Gerber multi-tool. Always long live the republic

TSA at our local airport will confiscate this tool immediately. Then, 4 times a year (used to be once) they auction the confiscated items as long as the item is not a fire arm, or does not use any type of fuel. The confiscated items are auctioned in bulk, which means whoever has the highest bid gets everything. In the last auction there were 60 knives, 32 multi-tools, including the MP600 bladeless, nail-clippers, bottle openers, and hair-picks. So, if you want to lose your tool, just bring it through the TSA checkpoint, because they'd love to steal it and turn a profit.

@SensiblePrepper: You're right, we loved ordering these when I was in the Army. They were in higher demand than Leatherman at the time. I've since moved to Leatherman for my multitool, but this is a great travel option.

Nice demo, not many people show the tools being used. The trick with deploying the pliers is do not grip the handle tightly. The harder you grip, the less they are able to move. Also try holding them and flicking the wrist to open them, as you get more force to move them more effectively than waving your whole arm as the lever force.

I have the first one, 15 years old. It's been to Afghanistan and all over. Its cleared its share of double feeds. After 15 years it still works. Only thing that's ever broken is the blade and that's because I used it as a pry bar.

Gerber's Blade-less MP600 is not the only one out there. SOG has their Powerlock Traveler model. Also a full-sized multi-tool. To be honest, I bought Leatherman's blade-less Rebar model. But honestly, while it's not a full-sized multi-tool, it would be excellent for work-places here in America where employees are outright forbidden to have knives on them. However, looking at the overall tool selection on that version of the Rebar, I can see possible issues with carrying it in some foreign countries. I took a serious look at the Gerber several months back, along with the SOG. In the end, I chose the SOG. While the scissors on the SOG feel cheap, I think it's overall a better blade-less option than the Gerber.
@NGMonocrom

+Blackie Black Actually, more and more companies are adopting that policy. The idea is if an employee gets upset and stabs another one, the policy prevents the company from getting sued. it's all about $$$. Meanwhile, the company can pretend they care about safety in the work-place.

What you refer to as "flat head" screwdriver blades are actually "slotted head" drivers. You are confusing the type of "drive" (slotted, Phillips, Torx, etc.) with the screw head "profile" (flat head, round head, pan head, etc.) Also, when using the can opener, you are allowing the entire blade to pass through the cut, then you're bending the tool back to extract it.. Instead, you should rock the blade, pausing before the tip completely penetrates the lid, push the tool forward to a new pivot point, then cut again. The motion should be continuous & smoother, like cutting with a scissors - when doing a long cut, you don't completely close the scissors blades, but make a series of shorter cuts.

Where I'm from there are two types of screwdrivers: Flathead and Philips. I don't think anyone is confused here, we call it what we call it, what our parents called it, what our grandparents called it.

Hi Don, great review as always! I have one very similar, purchased at a military store, claim to be american but made in china. Comes always with me everywhere in my EDC. A multitool like this is your first must if you want to build a EDC and BOB. But I will never spend 40$ for a multiplier with no blade, IMO I prefer two for 10 bucks each. If you loose this one or if you broke it, you will never be disappointed or frustrated. And in an emergency situation, you can give it to other who needs it. In extreme SHTF scenario, if you have two cheap you can exchange one for other goods (medicines, a water transportation system). Best Xmas wishes and a big CIAO from NEItaly! Gian

TSA can still seize it and sell it. So my advice is don't have it at an airport. I edc this tool otherwise, and it is great, especially in a no knife office. And it is a no fear hand it to the kids tool for crafts, etc. I always carried a pocket knife, but lately started to realize I use them for food prep. in the kitchen or construction where I have toolboxes, so do I really need one in my pocket? Unless I'm camping or something, then I'll take one. But then I can combo carry with the pliers and pick a knife that is better than a multi tool blade, which always seems awkward and compromised anyway. I'm rambling. Great tool get one.

I am wandering are the military issue made in China if so they need to bring manufacturing home . I bought one at an estate sale a few months for 12 dollars the Original like brand new zero rust it's a weather man . but will probably never us it or have us for it . but did drop in to the camping gear along side my grand dads tool roll which has to be a hundred years old took out all the model A tools and put different stuff in there about 30 years ago it's my go to kit when were on the move . But did buy the Bucket boss tool roll after watching your video that roll is built like a tank almost bullet proof it's so tuff not one stitch out of place or frayed top quality and after making leather sheaths now for some time I think I know a bit about stitching . Filled it with life saving gear as I call it . Happy Trails

Have been issued the military version several times. I was cutting something not very hard and replaceable carbide pieces just snapped with very little pressure. I definitely didn't attempt to cut anything with the other pairs. I'm definitely not going to pay $20 plus for the left and right prices. So I strongly recommend that you refrain from using that part of the tool unless you have no other option.

I've cut through some 8d nails with the carbide cutters on my Surge - but only because I cna change them out. The cutters on my MP600 aren't and easy change and I'd probably need to send it to Gerber for a repair - so I don't do that.

Thank you Sir, once again a very thorough, detailed, informative and well-presented review with your entertaining style incl. bloopers! Looking seriously at the Gerber MP600 line since I found out it's used by US military, and I've been puzzling for a few months now about which multitool to get as I'm in the UK and most Leathermans are not legal carry here, we aren't allowed locking blades. I also don't want ''made in China'' so these are interesting and more affordable than Swisstools. I believe the smaller Gerbers (Dime, Vise) are made in China but anyway they're too small tbh, as are the LM Squirts and Styles. Gonna look at your review on the MP600 bladed version, because ideally I'd like a bladed multitool but only if it's non-locking. Otherwise I'll get this as I EDC an SAK anyway, and if I'm in the outdoors I take a fixed-blade knife too. Pricewise I can't get these as low as $40 but at around $75 (£60) this is a very reasonably priced option considering the quality and features. Thanks again.
@MasterYoist
@MasterYoist 4 года назад
Worse case scenario IMO is to do like I do when I go to a place where we can't have blades. I removed the knife blades from one of my older multi-tools and inserted metal washers in their place (so everything stays properly tight. I was using the tool to adjust a piece of furniture when the boss walked in and said something about it. So, I handed her the tool and explained that the it had no cutting blades whatsoever. Everything was fine after that. I keep the bladed tool in the bottom of my backpack though - just in case.
@simonh6371
@simonh6371 3 года назад
@@MasterYoist Since I wrote my comment I did indeed buy a MP600 bladeless, and more recently I bought a Leatherman Rebar (non bladeless) which was on offer. I know I could take the blades out of my Rebar but I don't want to do that to it, also there is a way to disable the locks with a piece of metal but I don't want to do that either as all the tools would just be flopping around, since there is no slipjoint or any other mechanism to hold them in place. So I just keep that for outdoors activities, as well as with my bugout kit.

Thanks for the look-see Sootch. Seems rather worthless with no blade nor real saw. Even the scissors seemed lame. Why couldn't they have made a real saw and a blade that is removable. At least then there would be some use for it 99% of the time. As it is now it is nothing more than an expensive retractable pair of pliers. Gerber also doesn't honor their lifetime warranty either. I sent in my original 600 for a broken file and a broken screwdriver and though a simple replacement of the tools would be more than sufficient they could not fix it. This is the same tool that was issued to both the US Military and the Canadian Military and yet they sent my tool back not fixed with a note saying it cannot be fixed. The tool is in otherwise pristine condition for being 24 years old. Some warranty, some company.
