I’ve owned the principle for two years. It remains my primary belt knife when camping, hiking, and fishing. Strops well, great for carving and lite batoning.
beautiful knife, let me tell you that gerber stands firm behind their products and with a very good warranty , they are a proud company. i recommend gerber to anyone who wants a good knife at a reasonable price
Bryan, Thank you, I appreciated the detailed review. Not that I need another knife, but had been looking for a more compact Scandi-grind to use for lighter chores. I had bypassed the Gerber Principle for no other reason than I don't like plastic sheaths, but your demonstration highlighted the knife's worth in a positive way. I bought it, made a leather sheath for it, and am very happy with the purchase. The Principle is a well-made, compact version of a full-up bushcraft knife. I have no hesitation in carrying this rugged little gem on day-hikes or overnighters. Again, thank you for the informative video.
This is a great knife. I bought the coyote brown one. I carry it dropleg style and it rides really well. It came razor sharp out of the box and the handle material and ergonomics are so comfortable. I love it so much that I want the Strongarm for my birthday.
That small knife does look great and I am glad that it came very sharp and living up to the Gerber reputation. It would make a good backup for preparing food and a few other uses and will strike a fire easily too.
Great review (as always--I watch lots, comment occasionally 😜), just wanted to say awesome editing on the slow-mo at the rotation testing facility (and the "I've been wanting to say that all video", "the Principle of the thing" made me LOL 🤣). Great video 😊✌
Thanks Brother ! I really like the idea of that for edc. My nitpick is the hole closest to the blade. Seems like a weakpoint. Other than that just about perfect....
Thanks for showing this knife! I've been excited for it for all the reasons you mentioned since it premiered at Shot show (I think), but was holding off for some reviews. I am ready to buy!
Very good Bryan. Thinking the next time I get $20 off coupon on my favorite site I'll be checking to see if the Principle is available. Saved to my knife favorites list.
At 3:13 you can see where this gentleman has trouble pulling the knife out of the sheath because it clicks in and is held in place pretty well. I thought it was just me that was having this problem, though I don't have any experience handling knives, so maybe I'm just not gripping it properly when I try to pull it out. I'm afraid I'm going to cut my hand when it jerks out like that. Anyone have any insight on this?
I'm going to checkout Cabela's to see if they have one today! Thanks for the review Brian! Does that barrel behind you have military markings? It looks like an airfoil group can for GBU-10 laser guided bombs. They were also used for GBU-15 guidance sections. Have a good weekend!
I like your knife review a lot but your comment about not re-inventing the wheel got me thinking. You baton, whittle, feather stick, etc with pretty much all the knives you get your hands on. Has any really failed? Any other tests you'd want to add or swap in? I do like the Strongarm sheath system. I have the Strongarm and like it a lot though wish it was something better than a 420HC. I know it'd raise the price. Thanks for the vids.
Bryan,Looks like a very nice little knife. I watched a video from about 4 years ago. I was looking for a neck knife. I purchased the Schrade SCHF 13SM for my neck knife.
I didn't have a positive experience with Gerber CS a few years ago. That's too bad, as I like this knife. I like that watch, Brian, with the off-center bezel.
I really like your reviews sir thanks! Just ordered this little Gerber because its made in the USA. I didn’t liked the Chinese versions of Gerber. I hope Gerber wil stay in the Usa with their knives in the future i love those, just like the Strongarm. Greetings from the Netherlands 🇳🇱 Europe!
@@SurvivalOnPurpose i send it back. Nice blade but to small... more like a edc fixed blade. My folder is bigger than this 😂👍🏼. But great quality for sure!
I bought the knife and really like it. However, the sheath is terrible. I tried removing the knife and cut my finger and had to get 4 stitches. I took a file and filed down the part that holds the knife so it would deploy easier. Works a whole lot better for me.
Hello. Awesome knife. But I was wondering what kind. Of DSLR camera are you filming with? The quality is very sharp and clear. Thanks. Enjoyed the video.(I'd like to buy the camera too.)
It's a Panasonic GH4, which apparenty was just discontinued since I bought mine. It is not technically a DSLR, it is a 4/3 mirrorless. Which I only learned during researching the camera. The GH5 is the closest model now: amzn.to/3cjuxSH
Is it a "zero grind" scandi cause only zero grind scandis are real scandis 😂 Looks like a really cool knife esp that sheath , so weird seeing a scandi coming from Greber. Their 420hc USA steel is perfect for a knife like this , its a lot like Mora's 12C27N .
My problem with the $60 price point is that I can get a kabar bk14 for $40-$45 (better steel, better price, still USA made with a warranty) with a sheath. Now, the bk14 isn't scandi ground, doesn't come with handle scales, and doesn't have the sheath options allowed by the gerber design, but I don't see the value of those making up the difference in price, especially with 420hc. The Prodigy is such a better buy from Gerber
"PERFECT EDC SIZE KNIFE" Full tang , drop point, Well balance ,Sharp spine , Under 60 $ Made in USA , Whaaat else you want ? BUT It's a EDC Knife for day tooday work not for bush craft B.cos of it size. So next time add food / fruits processing , Open a box/ package . cuting set belt , ETC thanks
This was definitely the last USA made knife I've bought. My Buck Selkirk had an uneven edge, my Gerber Principle came with a chip on the edge and a sheath with edges sharp enough for me to cut the side of my finger whilst drawing, and my GEC lock back has lock play. The only American made knives with no problems are my ESEE knives. Made in USA isn't worth sh*t. I never had problems like this with European and even Asian brands.
Sorry, but I have lost all faith in Gerber! I have tested several Gerbers of the same model and found their heat treatment to be very spotty. One would do okay the next would have a rolled or chipped edge. I used to be a Gerber Fan, Not any more! Don't even get me started on their palm pinching multi-tools.
They could have cjosen a better steel. 420 only comes out a 50 HRC with hi carbon to 55 HRC. It is stainless at 12% chromium and should be easy to sharpen again. But that is the cheap end of the stainless steels now. Hmmm would cut bait well....
I understand made in the USA is a big thing for lot of people. I live in Salem Oregon not too far from Gerber knives. But I can name a ton of knives I would say is better than this 420 steel come on $60 even worse I would never pay $60 for a knife made out of 420 at that price you can get a lot of knives with D2 steel or other steals that are way better quality
People used 420hc longer than any of your fancy steals and most of the 420hc steel knives are still circulating in use today after 50+years...... so can't put a steel down when proof is in the pudding
Your wrong survival is an accident thats why they call it survival and its also the definition and its USA /china because steel and plastic come from china friend works for gerber whose in purchasing
This one is made in USA with American steel. It would make absolutely no sense to purchase and ship cheap Chinese steel to USA when Gerber can use cheap American steel like 420HC.
