Gerhard didn't turn into a monster, he was always a monster. Alot of children grow up in abusive homes and don't become abusers.

Ooh his mother makes my blood boil! I think there's something wrong with her. Does she think he should just carry on after what he did? She thinks her son's a baby & has no empathy at all for his victim- who only wanted to get away. I hope prison is rough on him. Thanks Nicole!

In my opinion, his mother is the reason he turned out the way he did. She enables him, makes excuses for him clearly she doesnt care about Andrea and her family’s feelings as long as she can get things her way, just like her son

I try to be more empathetic towards severely abused people and the effect it has on their behaviour. Those people eventually become mentally ill and have a warped sense of reality. I understand his mother's position , too.

She never had the courage to walk away but used the excuse that her husband would kill the whole family to not make an effort. If the sexual abuse of her children was not enough to galvanise her to seek help, then the death threats should have.

I absolutely agree with this statement. Parents who don't help kids to face their weaknesses, become entitled and out of touch with values suitable for a healthy society! But taken into account, this guy had an extremely traumatic childhood, but yet, it's no excuse! His mother didn't think with her head...

Unfortunately, when you don’t allow your children to face consequences when they are young, they will grow into Gerhardus Janse van Vuuren. Whatever the circumstances, mom has put a murderer back on the street to murder again. She is guilty. Very guilty.

Doesn't matter what happened to you during your childhood,it doesn't give you the right to hurt someone else. If I'm her dad nothing but nothing would stop me for taking his and his whole familys life's . The law is failing us in this country.

Good Lord.. this lady did everything right to escape her partner and it went so tragically wrong. As a survivor of abuse, the early signs of reclusion and coldness I can say she was trying to protect her partner. Its a twisted method but its a sign that the perp has asserted control. My heart broke and wished someone could have intervened and granted her some more help to get away. The man (I am using the term loosely for him) needs to be sent awake for a long time. I survived childhood abuse but became a productive member of society. I *chose* to work on the trauma. I *chose* to not be like my abuser. But I am a rarity... I broke the cycle.

My greatest sympathy goes to the victims family, they did everything by the law and what did it get them? So many people failed this family and now two years after he was captured her father still has to wait for justice. I'm so disgusted at our justice system and how time and time again they fail the victims and families of GBV. This monster and his mother should be met with the full force of the law but instead there's constant postponements and zero consideration for the victims family. Why on Earth would the South African authorities not rush to go get this criminal, when they were informed by the Brazilians that Van Vuuren might be released? I don't understand that AT ALL. Thank you Nicole, for another interesting and well-researched story.

He was found guilty in the Johannesburg High Court on Monday 13th June 2022 and sentencing is on the 27th July 2022

Only severe mental illness can be taken into account for criminal behavior such as schizophrenia. NO other mental illness affects one's capacity for sound judgment. I say this as a fact as I am bipolar 1. Even in the worst lows, you are fully able and capable of sound reasoning and judgment.

I just googled it, he was sentenced to life. With regards to the "Nature Vs. Nurture" breeding bad/evil people, I personally think it could be a combination of the two. There are many, many people who experience numerous atrocities throughout their lifetimes, but are still inherently good people. They don't murder, rape, steal etc, despite the bad things that have happened to them. On the contrary, there are people who have had perfectly normal upbringings, in loving families, that do some terrible things in their lifetimes. Perhaps bad circumstances exacerbate someone inherently bad...

I feel that many children grow up in traumatic circumstances and as adolescents must make their own decisions and choices...the mother was and is not helping her narcissist and self pitying son...she has no real feeling for the victim, her parents and loved ones...she should have got a court order against her own husband, left and saved her own children...she feels guilty and wants to excuse what her son did...destroy a whole family....our police are a disgrace and can we expect justice in a system riddled with ineptitude, laziness, corruption...God save the ordinary suffering public. His mother chose her husband, he was probably the quintessential "bad boy" who women swoon for and yes Gerhardus is unfortunately product of that hostile environment, his mother could have left her husband, she made the decision not to. Does this exonerate Gerhardus of his crime, definitely not, justice must be served. It was premeditated and he needs to be jailed for life.

If ever there was a case of a mother creating a monster, this thug’s mother created his path. She did not remove her children from the violence. She exposed them to it albeit with excuses, and in effect contributed to his training as violent men. Kids learn what they live. Mature people can still make the choice to follow a gentle path, but his mother kept him as a little boy who needs to be “protected from the world” and not face the consequences of his incredibly violet actions. She gave him the message that he has excuses not to face his punishment. She left him not mature enough to chose another path. God forbid my daughter runs into a misfit like this.

It is nature verses nurture. One can overshadow the other. His environment wasn't the best one to develop a stable personality and mind. I believe wholeheartedly that the environment definitely plays a part in the formation of an individuals personality, so I tend to not judge humans too harshly.

25 yrs experience in these cases, truly, as a woman, with respect, there always seems to be that factor playing a role. Yes fathers play a role but mothers have greater influence over the raising of kids. Her behavior and attitude in court illustrates her complicity and the possible contributing influence of her son’s self entitlement and arrogance. Women need to make conscious efforts to not allow development of abusive nature or other. Identify early and ADRESS it.

I worked with Dries, and watched his daughter grow up. This man who murdered her needs to go to prison for life. He took a beautiful woman's life. When I found out I was shocked especially hearing the news from Dries. I could see the pain he and his wife were going thru. He is a murderer and his mother helped him to try and run to Brazil. His mom is guilty and should also be punished.

It's because narcissistic behaviors are increasing, and the medical boards don't want to register it as a disorder. bipolar depression anxiety was easily registered, hut narcissist not. So until this is resolved, people will just go and do what they want.

In my opinion, your past/parents/people who were part of your life in your pre-teen years have a massive impact on your life/personality. However if you don't (as that child) have even 1 responsible loveable adult to guide you, you can't possibly ever have remorse , as you will think 'this is life - mine and i'm living it according to what I knew was real' . So female figures in his life had the most impact on the outcomes he believes.. The female (adult figures in his life at that age, didn't care enough about him at all)
