@@zeddeka The song was about how the tabloids portray celebrities: the bride, the b--tch, the nun, etc., She was not happy with the image of Ginger Spice and what it became. Hence, the funeral scene: She is killing and burying the image and simply being her true self.
Geri has always had such a profound understanding of pop culture history, the fashion, the references are so on point… even in her ginger spice days her outfits may have sometimes been tacky but always with a wink, and her appreciation for old Hollywood is always on brand
That’s why Geri was the key member of the Spice Girls. She may not be vocally talented, or the best dancer, but she has charisma, creativity and drive. Without her, the ‘spice’ was gone.
I remember how BIG this was, especially as I grew up in the UK. Everyone was talking about Geri's comeback/solo debut single and there was so much hype. Even my parents talked about it. I had the cassette and I was so jealous (in a nice way) that my friend had the CD version with all of the postcards :D
same. me too. i really love geri. and remember to that day. this video always play on mtv asia. i was so obessed with her fist album...and also the first album from melanie c..
Genius. For Geri Halliwell to release this as her first single after quitting the biggest girl group in history. This was a moment. I commend her bravery.
@@warmlavender5525 Prague is so beautiful. been there twice. solo just after " freedom" and in 16 I think with my son( during the heatwave) she might change a bit but she is still the grand old lady!
Still a quality tune 21 years on. Loved how bold and leftfield it was for a pop song. There was nothing in the Top 40 like this at the time, this record just exuded confidence. Geri had balls back then!
She pretty much brought the Spice with her wherever she went. Schizophonic is more like a mature Spice album than Forever was ;) Spice Girls without Geri lost their Spice.
What a classic I remember waiting patiently for the video to air on Top of the Pops in 1999 it was her big return to music after leaving the Spice Girls. She seriously took the Spice with her into her solo music.
Firestarter2014 I remember that too. And her playing it for the first time on Radio 1's Breakfast Show with Zoe Ball - only for Boyzone to trump her at the last hurdle with a now largely forgotten number one! This was the only decent solo thing she did mind. Everything else was a mess!
@@Irishgui83 OK I'll give Mi Chico Latino its due as well. Possibly Bag It Up as well for the BRITs performance alone. But in terms of mission statement and being a big pop culture moment and establishing her as a solo artist this was an incredible single.
ABSOLUTELY MADONNA INFLUENCED GERRI AND THE MILLIONS OF FEMALE ARTISTS FOLLOWING HER AND I LOVED THIS SOND AND VIDEO WHEN IT CAME OUT. JLO CAME OUT AT THE SAME TIME AND I THOUGHT GERRI WAS THE BETTER ARTIST BETWEEN THE 2 I MEAN SHE CAN REALLY SING BUT AFTER JLO HIT THE PUERTO RICAN EXPLOTION HIT RICKI MARTIN CHRISTINA AGULARA ENRIQUE IGLESIAS AND SO IT WENT.
She was burying ginger spice or trying to..the pressure got to all of them. Geri was the boss of the group. Thier strategist, the person who put together the mad plan to fire bob and Chris Herbert and get control of their music etc. Without geri there would be no spice girls.
Actually she only got in the group because she kept bugging the producers after she was told no multiple times and not having the spice girls would have been no great loss they were cheesy and crap anyway
This was all shot in Prague! There is the railway station, library in Strahov monastery, Trojský zámeček, Vyšehradský most and the stairs to the Prague castle! Prague is beautiful ❤
So relevant today really...maybe we should all look a little deeper. I remember this being BIG back in the day. Fresh from leaving the Spice Girls, us Geri fans were hungry! And she served. Geri has never been a powerful vocalist but her lyrics and melodies are her talent, which I will take any day over well sung shxt. She was the heart of the spice girls to me, it was never the same after she left. I must have played this video abd the remixes on CASSETTE a thousand times.
This woman is such a legend! I absolutely love this song and the video is really well-crafted. The symbolic imagery of her dead Ginger Spice persona just tugs at the heartstrings!
Watch this video if you are needing modification in your life -- she walked away from one of the biggest groups in history and did it again on her own.
Actually Bananarama was named the biggest girl group in the world who has an album which every one of track's were a hit single and they are still making albums and still touring to this day
TheAnisXX Doesn't it mean anything? The fact of facing yourself and get rid off all of the masks people use to cover their fears, frustration and dreams doesn't say anything to you? ....Like an invitation of being authentically yourself and then you can shout to the world Look at me...this face is free!
ok, I shouldn't have said "shit" - yet, I couldn't see Geri other than Ginger Spice - Come on, vocally she is poor - her last single was the worst ever released - She is free, ok - the message behind that video is ok too - yet, she was only under the Robbie Williams sucessful soilo career spell - that was all
TheAnisXX Vocally she is fine for a popstar. Half Of Me wasn't as bad as that imo and I am sure her new album will have better tunes if you only give them a chance.
If I were a playwright, actor, director, or something - this entire album 'Schizophönic' is just begging to be a broadway musical or play... Either about Geri's illustrious life, or a fictional character. It literally is. That could be said about many artists' recordings im sure. but this really really is begging for the stage. and not only this track. the entire album is a rare gem.
To me, personally , She is the Only and All Spice Girl , I never cared about the others . The other “spice girls” where just a fluff . To me , I said , personally , she is the one , the only one I liked and I still like . She is beautiful , energetic , sincere, charismatic and a hell of a good singer . She gives it all!! Love her❤She deserved her success
She's the real spice! My favorite!!! TBH this sounds really good if this was done by the 5 girls for their 3rd album (if she never left). I can imagine Mel B's Laugh, Mel C's high notes, Victoria for the burial scene, and Emma for the other verses... Whatyathink????
@@andrewturvill7145 I read on you tube that the Spice Girls wanted to make albums of duets after Spice World. Looking at them now, everything they did was right. Forever is my fave ever, they had two number 1 singles, Mel C made the best solo albums and had the best solo career. Victoria was more into r&b and fashion
It's the video clip that doesn't give the song its rightful justice. She should have performed a full MTV number, with dance etc. She uses too many male leachering male dancers I've seen. The distract from her talent. This song is great & she contributed to writing it.
I used to love pop music back from 1998-2002 as I was getting into it. Felt a bit embarrassed during my mid 00s indie/emo teen years to admit it but I now look back at those first few years I starting listening to music with fond memories.
I was never into the Spice Girls even when they were big. But, I heard this song on 99.5 Best FM one day in Budapest and was blown away. Just something about her vocals and the beat of the song makes it amazingly catchy. It is funny but I live in the USA and never heard this before over there. I read this was an incredibly popular song through out Europe and in Geri's native UK.. Fantasztikus dal! Szeretem.
I love that she always gives her music that 'European' vibe to it. However her latest work, Half Of Me wasn't that good. If BBC is going to send her as representative for Eurovision 2014 she needs to come up with a better song...like this one here.
Auckland, New Zealand is back into Level 3 lockdown as of 12.08.2020, so I am working from home again and partying like it's 1999! Gotta make lemonade out of the lemons life hands you :)
Auckland, New Zealand is back into Level 4 lockdown as of 19.08.2021, so yet again I am working from home again and partying like it's 1999! Amazing to think we had a year of normality, unlike most of the world.
This was geri's comeback break away hit after leaving the biggest pop girl group originally formley known around the world as the spice girls yes I've been mentally stuck in the 90s boom. I don't want to move on either
This video was a scandal in 1999. The "bitch," she naked in the pool, with the crown of thorns as Jesus and the Ginger Spice funeral. In some countries the video could not be played before 10 pm and she had problems with Catholics. A delicious scandal. Geri has always been great at self-promotion and has made her solo debut a great thing. I miss this Geri.
ppl are so mad at jesy throwing shade at little mix when she literally did NOTHING compared to Geri when she released this, now this was some reallll shade .
