Geri was obviously had the biggest personality and was the most outwardly musically and visually creative of the Spice Girls. She approached everything as if she always had something to prove. She took the public's criticism of her being the least vocally talented one in the group, challenged herself and did all of it with a wink. She makes up for her vocal limitations with her infectious personality and songwriting skills.
Geri was always so gracious when referring to the other girls after she left. She was respectful and never bitter (yes, she too had every reason to be, particularly because of how spiteful the other 4 became). The only thing she was adamant and firm on was that she did tell the girls she wanted to leave the group in September. Despite the other girls claiming in the media that Geri never said anything, in the 2000 Spce Girls vs. Aprilia court case, Emma and Melanie C testified that it was possible she did but that they “don’t remember” (please). And the girls lost this case, so clearly the court gave more credibility to Geri. And when you look at interviews with the group from April ‘98, it’s quite obvious there’s tension. That’s also supported in the reports of bad arguments backstage at the 1998 Helsinki show. In the end, good on Geri for stepping out of bullying and taking charge of her own well-being. It’s the only correct choice that anyone should do. Inspirational. Brave. Iconic. There’s only one Geri Halliwell-Horner.
So much work and love has gone into this! I am Geri OBSESSED. Her music was WAY ahead of her time and I believe she's a musical genius. One of the greatest pop writers of our time. She may not have the strongest vocal range but she is a songwriting genius and she was the perfect pop star. Schizophonic is an incredible masterpiece. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! ❤
Ahead of her time? Look at Me is a rip of "History Repeating" by the Propellerheads feat. Shirley Bassey, latino was very in at the time. There's nothing ahead of its time or masterpiece about it.
@@andrewturvill7145 it was the other four girls’ own fault by giving that ultimatum. Some of their producers have said that Geri was the driving force behind a lot of the songs.
She really thought she was bigger than the group her personality, ambition, tiredness, all played her part, her music didnt do all that she was middle of the road she was a vibe, but needed the girls and vice versa!
Ur so wrong. Geris book reveals that the girls had no breaks and she was depressed, exhausted and dealing with bulimia. She just didn't want to continue living in the cycle of constantly filming music videos, doing interviews and touring. She was sick of being ginger spice because it wasn't truly her. It was part of her but she didn't really know herself, she thought fame would make her happy and fill the voids she had, she left because she was unhappy not because she thought she was bigger than them. She didn't even think about doing a solo record for a while and she could've lost everything according to her lawyer if the 4 girls and virgin records would sue her for stuff. Mel C had similar experience, but she didnt have to courage to quit after spiceworld, she never wanted to do forever.
As Mel C said, Geri leaving was "the beginning of the end of the Spice Girls". I've seen shady people say she left because she was no longer the star of the group. I didn't know she said "I'm sorry I left. I was just being a brat" during one of their 2019 reunion concerts.
Geris book made it clear that depression, bulimia and exhaustion were the main reasons. When she couldn't do the breast cancer thing she left early because she was that depressed about being ginger spice. Geri always wanted to be famous but she did it to find external validation, once she realised fame didn't give her all the glory she had seeked it was over. She wanted to find herself and who she is and that she did during her solo career. The spice girls worked way too hard which burned out both Geri and Mel C. If they had more vacations I believe Geri could've finished the tour
The obsession I had during her solo career is reignited watching this like a comfort blanket I haven’t used for years. I lived and breathed her 😍😍 God I miss her 😭 This is absolutely FANTASTIC, thank you so so so so so much ❤️
At Robbie William’s recent tour, he told us that his song Eternity was about Geri, and how much sense does that make - especially after watching this?! (Love this channel, lots of Christmas holiday binging… v ready for more steps/sugababes too)
"Summertime" by Geri was so James Bond-like.... so Nancy Sinatra like, so Lana Del Rey (before Lana Del Rey would be invented) .... that sweet toxic track, it should have been a single.
It would gave easily been number one if she had only released it on 2 cds. 140,000 copies in one week, with 1 cd, Boyzone 140,700 with 2 cds. She would have soared to number one easily with well over 200,000 sales with 2 cds! I. Was obsessed with Geri, it was a nagical time in pop
JC Chaze from NSYNC, who is also a Leo, released a Solo album called "Schizophrenic" with an album cover of him posing in a similar manner to Geri's cover.
I love how she talks about painting a picture with each song and taking the listener to different places like Spain or Switzerland...I feel that a lot.
Thank you for this video! It’s wonderful! I love the spice girls and remember all this. Geri was in France as a Tax exile due to the insane amount of Tax the UK pay… even worse nowadays! REVOLT
Had they not split, This album would have been their third album. It’s very Spice Girls but I wonder if they agree to release look at me as the first single
Great vid. I never bought any Geri albums but all the singles were on now cds. And i taped them all off radio. Lift me up and Me chico Latino are masterpieces
The others were better vocally but Geri added the creative spunk that made them stand out. That which Geri herself forgot in the following solo albums but hey...
Releasing only 1 version of Look at me CD single was her biggest mistake. That Boyzone song is really dire. It's a really solid pop album though. I prefer the evil cover. 👹 I also think that most of her b-sides are better than some of the album tracks just like in Melanie C's case.
Too bad "Look at me" didn't have a CD2, but wasn't that that she didn't have any leftover songs to put out as a b-side. All of her b-sides were recorded in 1999.
Look At Me was released on 2cds in the UK same as boyzone did. Her record company made a huge error by not using different artwork or a different track listing for the 2nd cd which came with 4 postcards. It was very bizarre. And they cost her that number 1 due to that schoolboy error
It's interesting see her talk about the creative process. She's intelligent, and more than just a manufactured artist. However, a reviewer saying it has more hits than the first 2 Spice Girls album is shameless payola or delusion. It's also hard to ignore the weak vocals. Look at Me is a rip off of "History Repeating" by the Propellerheads & Shirley Bassey, released a few years earlier in 1997.
People should be sure to look up Geri's extensive interviews in Spanish at the time of promoting this record. Her level is atrocious but they are quite entertaining!
Did love this album at the time but seeing her cavort with Tory MPs at events leaves a bad taste in my mouth & can't play her music anymore. Working Class power!
She left but they were pregnant anyway, there was always gonna be a very extended Spice break and i very much disagree shes the least talented, she wrote the chunk of their biggest hits, Viva Forever was mostly Geri penned and thats their best song. They sounded so uninspired once she was gone.
Mel C is the reason Forever didn't get good promotion, she didn't want to do it and wanted to quit. The girls never revealed this as Melanie C didn't want to be the villain ans they realized going on a hiatus is easier than breaking up
