Hi, I've been studying German on Duolingo for a few months now, and I started to realize that the pronunciation of s is quite nuanced, and that if I could learn the reasons for the differences, that I would have a better handle on pronunciation than simply by repeating words or sentences. So I searched for and found your video, and you have enlightened me. Bitte!

I always thought, to this day, that the s was pronounced like the English z at the beginning and in the middle of vowels.
@STEFAN9484
@STEFAN9484 6 лет назад
so s = z at the start of a word ? what about is inside of a word or at the end .
@TheNorwegianSchool
@TheNorwegianSchool 6 лет назад
Yes, s = (English) z at the start of a word (please note that the German Z is something completely different than the English Z). No voice if it's at the end of the word (explained at 0'40). Vibration inside a word depends on the writing (s, ss, or ß, explained from 2'00).

This is so helpful! Does it basically mean that in southern Germany, there's little chance you'll hear the english "z" (voiced s)?
@learngermanwithstories
@learngermanwithstories 4 года назад
You would only hear it very softly.

I am confuse, some German pronounce S as 'Z' and some as 'S'. I guess both works?
@learngermanwithstories
@learngermanwithstories 5 лет назад
It depends on the situation - sometimes it's pronounced as S and sometimes as Z, but you cannot just do that randomly. Please watch the whole video to see the details.

@@learngermanwithstories It seems that Northern and Southern Germany pronounce it differently. If I am learning German, which pronounce should I follow? Northern or Southern?
@learngermanwithstories
@learngermanwithstories 5 лет назад
@@m.farhana.rahman3372 There is no right or wrong when it comes to Northern or Southern pronunciation. In this question you can basically choose whatever you prefer.

I think most of this video could be better understood if you said the sounded s was the English Z sound, as that is exactly what it is and is what every German teacher and professor I have ever had described it as.
@learngermanwithstories
@learngermanwithstories 2 года назад
The problem is that in English you often pronounce the S as an Z; also people who are not native speakers might be confused.

in some words like spanien or Straße the S is pronounced similar to the English "sh" is there a rule for this or what?
@learngermanwithstories

Yes. When we start a word with st or sp, we say [scht] or [schp].
