Built in Waldkirch Baden, Germany by A. Ruth & Sohn, the two-ton pipe organ was first exhibited at the 1900 World Exposition in Paris. Featuring 98 keys and 400 pipes, the organ has 18 lifelike figures that adorn the elaborately carved machine, with 12 of them spinning and dancing to each tune. It still runs on what it did more than 100 years ago... hand-fed cardboard sheet music.

I'd like to thank you for this. I was born at Myrtle Beach in 1958. I remember sitting watching this when I was a little girl for hours and never getting bored. I almost died when I heard that my beloved Pavillion was going to be torn down. I was happy that they put this back together down the road at the other park. I would have missed it. Still it makes me happy to see it where it used to be. Thank you for your video.

Found online:: Ruth 38 Fairground Organ at Myrtle Beach, SC By David Oppenheim I am replying to Cecil Dover's MMD post in 161011 MMD concerning the whereabouts of the wonderful Ruth organ that used to be located at the pavilion at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for the public to enjoy. I recently asked several Myrtle Beach business owners if they knew what happened to the Ruth; no one seemed to know anything about it. Well, finally someone connected with the Chamber of Commerce there suggested that I call Burroughs & Chapin Company, Inc., who is the developer of most Myrtle Beach amusements including the demolished pavilion, where the Ruth used to be located. The mystery was finally solved! Upon being connected to the "PR" person of Burroughs & Chapin Co., I was told that the band organ is, indeed, still in storage somewhere in Myrtle Beach. The woman that I talked to was very familiar with the Ruth and it's façade as she described it to me. Apparently Burroughs & Chapin have no current plans to do anything with it at this time. As I drove through Myrtle Beach last Saturday I could certainly understand her statement, as the whole area has turned into nothing but miles and miles of shopping malls and strip shopping centers, fast food joints and souvenir shops en masse. The amusement centers look like the Disney World and Universal attractions in Orlando, Florida. Burroughs & Chapin tore down the pavilion quite a few years ago to probably build "wall to wall" condominiums and sprawl. There is very little left of the "Old Myrtle Beach" as many of us remembered it in the 1950s through the 1990s. I highly doubt that the organ will see the light of day anytime soon. Very sad. This organ has been removed from the Broadway at the Beach Pavilion Nostalgia Park. Conflicting reports circulated early, but now it's reported this organ is undergoing complete renovation. Apparently, it will not be returning to Broadway, as they've repurposed the area for bumper cars. The reports say that it will be relocated to an indoor facility somewhere in Myrtle Beach. EDITORIAL: Personally, I don't like this idea. This organ has played to the open air in Myrtle Beach for years, without care. It needs a nice facility, but it should still play to an outdoor audience, with REGULAR, COMPLETE MAINTENANCE. You don't go to MYB to sit inside.

Back in the day they let people walk in back and see the inside workings of the organ. That was quite a sight for me when I was a kid. You think it's loud, it is REALLY LOUD in the back.

I remember seeing this organ play at Myrtle Beach in 1964. There was a ride that went around behind the building that housed this organ, and as I rode by, I could see large belt-driven pulleys spinning inside.

@M38Ruth Not THE Don Stinson? My very great and wonderful next door neighbor, Jerry Betts (now deceased unfortunately ) talked glowingly about Don Stinson & his amazing work on carousel band organs! Jerry had a band organ in his house! He converted his 2 car garage into his office and put a band organ in there, it was amazing to hear and we could hear it all over the neighborhood! When you were in the same room with the organ, the sound would go right thru your chest!

Mr. Stinson named a band organ model after him: the JB-66. That was Stinson's version of the Wurlitzer 153 Special, and several were built.

Buroughs and Chapins (first class creeps) sold the Pavillion Nostolgic Park to another company who is running it now. The employees for the park t can tell you who the new owners are. They told me last year but I don't remember the name. Thanks for all your work trying to get the organ running again and putting it on youtube for others to enjoy

Try working with that plus the obnoxious horns from the rides that are right next to it... It is not the most fun :P but thanks for giving me memories from my summer ^_^ also, from what I learned working there, to get it to play, when you are there just talk to a manager... They can play it whenever someone asks them to.

Last month, I contacted the management at Broadway asking to have the organ playing so that I can get a more "professional" copy of this video. I left a message with them 3 days before arriving in MYB so that I would know whether or not to bring my pro equipment. I received no reply. It truly is a shame that they have such a marvelous piece of history and are not doing anything with it. When I return to Broadway next spring, I will try again. Thank you to all for the positive comments!

This may have originally been a Ruth fairground organ but it now needs a full rebuild and putting back on books. The MIDI action is sluggish, the arrangements are terrible, the bell should be removed, the organ is out of tune, but most of all it sounds awful. I suggest the owner listens to a large Ruth owned by a typical European owner and puts his organ right.

arburo1. I think you should sell the band organ to germany, well...because it's german, then...well...you could build a new one out of scratch in your garage if it's filled with old materials. You could do that.

Thank you for your kind words. This is not my organ. Surely you can hear the problems with this organ? The action runs on and makes the music indistinct. Also someone has fitted a blower instead of restoring the feeders. Oh, and by the way, Yes, I do restore organs and orchestrions.

This is a medley of European and American marches. In order, we hear: "Alte Kamraden" or "Old Comrades" (0:00-0:48), "Under the Double Eagle" (0:49-2:10), "The National Emblem" (2:10-3:26), "Radetzky" (3:27-4:17), "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" (4:24-5:27), "Jolly Coppersmith" (5:35-6:36), "Colonel Bogey" (6:36-8:12), and "The Stars and Stripes Forever" (8:20-9:55).

This organ was recently moved to Broadway on the Beach and was serviced by Stenson Organ Company. The cardboard cards are still there but no longer used. The organ is played by an electronic controller that is connected to the internet. The connection is reportedly so that Stenson Organ can change tunes and make other adjustments to the organ. The organ is not very well maintained and definitely not in tune. I have been disappointed since it was moved. I loved the way it used to sound.
@andrewbarrett1537

I would not totally blame Mr. Stinson for the performance of the organ. Some of it is maintenance budget. Some of it is distance: one does not just pop down from Ohio to South Carolina and touch something up on a whim. Plus the climate down there (as you well know) is quite humid and maybe a little hot and not very organ-friendly (or player-instrument-friendly in general) and so it is tough to maintain any instrument in that climate. If local folks can help with the maintenance that would be awesome. I know the Keislers came over several years ago (they're local) and painstakingly repaired and scanned all the cardboard book music that was with the organ (including a few special one-of-a-kind arrangements) so that it can again play its original repertoire via the MIDI as well as newer arrangements. They also own a fine band organ so perhaps they can (have?) help(ed?) with the maintenance of this one. From what I understand, Mr. Stinson has officially retired and auctioned off his business, so someone else will need to take over this organ's maintenance when it goes back on public display again. I could recommend Durward Center, Dick Hack, and Brian Thornton as folks who are *somewhat* close who are very good who could give it the TLC it needs.

The Hard Rock Theme Park in Myrtle Beach just declared bankrupcy and closed its doors after being open only 6 months. Maybe it wasn't the replacement for the Pavillion that they thought it would be. The Pavillion Nostalgia Park is better even though it is mostly kiddy rides.

You're absolutely right! It took me a while, but I came to the same conclusion as to why that right bellringer kept dinging away on every beat, and why the bandmistress was motionless! I think both bellringers were originally connected together to one dedicated hole in the trackerbar (where they would play, for example, triangle parts). I really am not sure what originally controlled the harpists, you would know better than me!

I beg to differ. I don't believe any pipe in this organ is out-of-tune in this video, although I might have missed one or two. There are a couple of problems though: the bell-ringers are hooked up to play from the wrong tracker bar hole / wrong MIDI track, and a couple of the notes cipher (play continuously) throughout the performance. If these small problems were fixed, it would sound great! What you have to understand is a good human ARRANGER of the music is what makes the organ sound lively!

The MIDIfication in this case was probably so the organ could be turned on and played by inexperienced employees, without fear of damage. In almost all cases, the MIDI system is not a replacement for the original book-music system, but rather supplements it. I believe this organ can still play books the traditional way. Book music, however, in the U.S., means the organ would require "care and feeding" that only older, more experienced and caring employess (or organ enthusiasts) could give it.

Organs have been destroyed in the U.S. for the same reason, although we are fortunate (as is Great Britain and continental Europe) that we've had some kind of preservation movement starting in about the 1950s which has preserved most of the band and fairground organs we can see and hear today. Without the efforts of these tireless enthusiastic people, nearly all would likely have been destroyed by now.
@KawhackitaRag
@KawhackitaRag 12 лет назад
I don't know what you mean about burning "all the good organs". It is true a lot of fairground organs were unintentionally destroyed in Europe during WWI and WWII, but there were many (sadly) INTENTIONALLY destroyed in many countries (Great Britain as well as Germany) immediately before and after the second war, simply because they were out of fashion, and more expensive to maintain than newfangled amplified carnival sound systems.

'Emotion' is only a technique of playing, the fact that the thing is natural (slightly out of tune and out of time) gives that impression. If you removed these qualities it would be lifeless...

What on earth are you talking about? Which good organs? Where? There were some Dutch street organs that got caught in gun battles in Netherlands, and some other fairground organs (German, French) that were destroyed generally accidentally as collateral damage during the two World Wars, but other than ONE story about ONE fairground organ that was playing the wrong national anthem (I think) and was either angrily smashed or shot at or something (I forget), I really haven't heard much of that. Instead, I've heard far more stories about German showpeople (and doubtless some Belgian and French showpeople and dance hall owners) hiding organs in barns, under straw bales, or bricking them up behind walls, all to hopefully protect them from the ravages of the war. In many cases, this worked, and instruments survived to play again after the war / be rediscovered. Unfortunately there WERE instruments intentionally destroyed, but most of what destruction I've heard about occurred mainly in the 1930s-1960s due to amplified sound systems replacing fairground organs in the fairgrounds. Luckily, enough of these instruments were, even then, still considered great and enough people could work on them, that most of what survived into the 1960s was able to be saved by preservationists, with some unfortunate exceptions. Nowadays, there are dozens of band and fairground organs still (again) in use by carnivals, carousels and showpeople, doing what they were originally supposed to do. In fact, I've heard about more European organs being destroyed after coming to the USA or Great Britain (after decades serving faithfully in carousels, in switchback rides, with roller coasters, and fronting "bioscope shows"), than of them being destroyed in Continental Europe itself, with the exception of dance organs (which mostly remained in Belgium/Netherlands until the great importations of the 1960s to the present), a huge number of which were broken up and parted out intentionally in the 1930s-1980s to become "Dutch street organs" or just to get parts to build new dance, street and fairground organs, which were then widely distributed over a great many organs, until almost no one can trace where all the parts went today (for SOME of the organs).
