The German w isn't pronounced as the English w (Wasser vs water). But w (Wasser, Winter etc.) as I learned it and heard it in Germany as native speaker is definitely not pronounced as English v (violence, victory). It's not the v of phonetic transcription. It's something between English w and v (w and v in phonetic transcription). German w has less friction than English v. I'm at a loss why it's everywhere claimed German w is pronounced like English v and why German words like Wasser are ˈvasɐ in phonetic transcription. The interested one might compare the pronunciation of German words with w in the beginning (like Wasser, Winter, warm) and English words with v in the beginning (like violence, victory, vague) online. German w and English v are not the same.

"tr" and "r" are the most difficult sounds in German, people understand me when I say it but I just can't pronounce it like native speakers.

Hi Ania, Love you so much! May I ask a question for the pronunciation of st and sp in German? Do they sound as /ʃd/ and /ʃb/ when they are followed by vowels while they sound as /ʃt/ and /ʃp/ when they are followed by consonants? Thank you.

Doris ZHENG In correct Standard German it's ʃt and ʃp before both vowels and consonants. But people from some regions might do it different because of dialectal influence.

I found 'Z' relatively easy. In an Indian language, called Marathi, we speak "ch" exactly as "Z" is pronounced in German. So, it was no sweat for me. 'R' is too difficult for me, though.

Guten Tag. Eine große Bitte. Kannst du ein Video mit dem Lied "Drei Chinesen mit dem Kontrabass" machen? Es gibt doch einige auf RU-vid aber nicht mit alle Vokale nur "a, e, i, o, u" und manchmal "ä" aber die wichtigste "ö, ü" (für Ausländer) kein Video. Vorschlag: es wäre besser, dass man, wie die Person die Lippen und der Mund bewegt; sehen kann; damit kann man das nachahmen. Herzlichen Dank.

Abdillahi Abdisamad High German Standard German was adopted by North German educated classes early on instead of their own Low German (similar to Dutch) since the 16th c.. Therefore the North German pronunciation (as in Hannover) is regarded as the model. South German (Austrian, Swiss) pronunciation often differs.

"wo" simply means "where", and "woher" means "from where".
